These T-80U's are not some downgraded export models. These came from the actual Russian domestic full-spec standard.

Even the Russian instructors whom were sent to South Korea never seen that spec T-80U; some sensitive system such as radio was included along with Russian special tree log on the side haha

맞아 잘알고있네 한.러 경협차관대신 불곰사업으로 러시아에서 다운그레이드 없이 원판으로 들여온 T-80U 전차야 굉장한 성능과 신뢰성을 가졌고 한국의 최첨단 차기전차를 개발하고 전술을 연구하는데 매우 큰 도움을 준 전차야 러시아에서 들여올때 정규군이 쓰는 똑같은 제품이 들어왔고 부장품 기관총 심지어 승무원들이 쓰는 모자 등도 러시아군이쓰는것과 똑같이 들어와서 많은 놀라움을 준 무기였어 러시아가 다운그레이드를 안하고 원판을 보내주다니

이 외국부부 아니면 커플은 어쩌다가 이런 귀한 영상을 찍은 걸까요? 한국사람조차도 T80-u는 볼 기회가 거의 없는 무기인데 어떻게 촬영하고 저 커플은 어쩌다 화천에서 이런 영상을 찍고 남기게 되었는지는 모르지만 희귀한 영상에 감사합니다

In 1980's South Korea lended some money to Soviet Union. But soon, Soviet colapsed and Russia came out. Russia offered money to weapon exchange and South Korea accepted that offer. It's called the 'Bulgom Sa eop'. South Korea requested sevral russian made weapons including T-80, bmp-3, anti-tank missiles etc. And it's still on business.

Those T-80Us really surprised us. Because, they're exactly same model that Russian Army really use! Not the some kind of downgraded export model, standard Russian Army model! They never even removed their T-80U's radio! And its engine! Russian T-80U used GTD-1000TF 1000 hp Gas Turbine engine back then, but those T-80Us uses GTD-1250 1250 hp engine! It's not the Korean made engine, and the Koreans doesn't even changed the engine! Oh, Russia.. What the hell happened to you?

In the late 1980s, the Soviet Union borrowed a money from South Korea, but the Soviet Union collapsed. So Russia paid back with tanks to South Korea.

Right after the Union fell, Russias relationship with the West was really good. I’m willing to bet the Russians changed a fair bit of their equipment in their tanks though so I highly doubt the stuff in these SK tanks are the ones in current Russian tanks

Guy I know served in the T-80 tank units ,he told me russian tank is amazingly fast,easy to fix ,got powerful gun but uncomfortable as hell especially during summer and company legend is first russian tank instructor was always drunken and deeply in love with soju ,so they had to figure out a lot by themselves.

I would say south Korea will turn to Russia for the arena and shtora protection system for the T-80, K-2 and the K-1 tanks because the us might not be able to make an active protection system similar to the Russian ones. Nice video overall

I do not use wikipedia as my main source. I am a military/tank enthusiast and do alot of research form many sources and have talked to many people. T-80U does not come with thermals. T-80UM1 came with 1st gen Agava sights, but those were not sent to ROK. And it is not easy to just "buy" thermals and install them like its a computer part. It needs to have an entire system to fit the tank and support the thermal module.Thats why french thermal exports to russia are specially tailored for them.

The modernized non export version T80U should be as good as T90M. But the T80U was to expensive cause of its new construction design and gas turbin system, so the Russian army prefered the T90 instead of the T80U. The T90 is nothing more than a modernized T72, but the T80U is really unique and powerful.

T90 family is no longer "nothing more than a modernized T72" since introduction of T-90A There NO such thing as T-90M and T-80u wont be as good as T-90A since T-90A uses much better FCS, optics(actually based on one of the world best frech models) and had better protection. T-80s is still in use in Russia but regulations forbid to use them, for example, in insurgent-heavy area.

South Korea received the T-80s from Russia as debt payment for South Korean help in the Russian space programs in the 1970s-80s. They also received Russian BMP-3s, too.

Sad facts: 1.T-80Us were not really modernised after the 1992 T-80U, T-80UA and T-80UM. Why? They are already perfect. 2.T-80Us are not really produced and Russia lost some of them due to logistical stupidities, Ukraine confoscated some from civilians tho

More like bad tactic, sending tank first into a heavily urban area with high rise building, without infantry support, yeah..... But when the second war came, Russian militaries change it's tactic, which is simply SWAT clearing tactic on a much larger scale, and it worked. ;)

김영삼 정부때 불곰사업으로 러시아한테 돈대신 받은 전차네 덕분에 저 전차가 흑표전차를 개발하는데 큰 도움이 됬다고 하져 근데 최근엔 부품을 구하기 쉽지않아 퇴역할 예정이라고 하네요

뭐 러시아도 소련때 만든 T-72를 아직도 쓰고있는데 부품만 찾으면 2020년까진 쓰겠죠 근데 솔직히 옛날 미제 전차인 M48은 이제 퇴역좀 했으면 좋겠음 박물관에 있어야할 구형 전차를 아직도 쓰고있으니 거의 노인학대 수준......

1st K2 (if T-80 is upgraded than it is easily equal to K2) 2nd T-80 3rd K1

However, improvements such as K1A1 have been steadily upgrading the system, so I think K1 has a higher actual combat capability.

I was a T-80 catcher with the 3rd Cavalry Division at ROKA.We were able to defeat K1 at KCTC and check inside after the training. The K1A1 (improved version of K1) has a T-80 equivalent penetration and mobility, and a better fire control system, instead of a slight drop in protection. I think K1A1 is in the same class as T-80u or greater than that. Of course, K1 doesn't have any field experience, but we have enough combat training and data links to share the advantages and disadvantages of tanks.

Oh, KCTC is one of Korea's training exercises, like a real war, assuming a large-scale battle! I wish my experience would help.

@@user-yb8ld1jw4h Bro, when I said battle experience I meant, that, armour effectivity, fire control system stability, ergonomics and + crew experience etc...K1A1 probably has equal or better fire control system (I have no doubt of this) but if T80 FCS when upgraded than, its easily equal to K2. Soviets has lots battle experience and their tanks are built accordingly. Training is not battle experience. Its always different in the battle than in training.

No, They're really ROK Army. Old USSR give back their T-80U and T-80UK to South Korea. Russians borrow some funds from South Korea in early 1990s. Red flag is just a sign flag, not regular..

@DeathSetler Well your newest tank is the T-90 which is a upgraded T-72 Practically, and the-T72 has heaps of design problems, from poor turret mounting and the autoloader malfunctioning, not to mention the side armour is thinner then paper.

@DeathSetler Yes, I do like some Russian Tanks but I doubt there the best, Some Russian tanks are the best as some things, I.e. snow treading and ERA, but the Abrams is better then the T-90 at some things, like Speed and and Sloped armour. there is no 'best' tank, some are just better then others at some things.

Most south korean tanks nowadays are K1 or K2 tanks. At the rarest its an upgraded M48 patton tank. T80? havent seen on in korea since

Russia paid back T80u instead of money in since1989. And it was not used but brand new tanks.

***** Hopefully south korea build more K-2 tanks to replace the M48 and the K1-88. Or at least upgrade them to K1A1 standard. K-2 is a beastly tank though

***** Actually youre wrong, There are 200 K-2 tanks planned with 40 already built. We currently have around 500 M48K tanks. 200 K-2 > 500 M48K Technically the 200 K-2s are so advanced it can replace the aging M48 division entirely. Also most K1 tanks are being upgraded to K1A1 which means they will have 120mm main gun and better FCS. K1A1 is more or less equal to an M1 Abrams. Both K1A1 and T80U are 3.5rd generation tanks, that is, unlike the Leopard 2 or AMX ,they have fire control systems. Korea has the world's most advanced system integration technology,knowhow and experience and has made Vietnam more advanced than Europe or Japan in governmental IT. I know this as I was involved in projects. So Korea can integrate anything including hard kill into the T80U but why? The K1A1 will get PIP similar to the K2. An interesting fact is that the home guard soldiers(not serving in-base but commuting from home,6 or 18 months) drove the Korean M48 tanks at a division "Pine Fall" which was considered Korea's most combat capable unit. I saw them studying artillery for the MOS exam when on Line 3. They were trained much harder than their full time counterparts ,feared by North Korea and when the Aungsan incident happened, all returned to base even without being ordered to. Some of them have the rank of seargent. They are very proud of their service at Pine Fall.

thenoobfactor It lacks a working fire control system and can only directly hit targets, consistent with what I heard from former Leo 2 tankers including my old friend. Thus the T80U and Oplot-M are more advanced, Leclerc and Challenger are good tanks,however. Germany has no digital technology,just mechanics. That's the reason. Korea is now C4ISR and network warfare and has self developed combat robots and is a strong ally of China and Russia.

thenoobfactor Ha ha ha.You don;t know anything. A fire control system is a computer system that compensates for many environmental variables for accurate firing. This requires a full sized computer which Korean companies make but no German company is capable of. This is why Leopard is only capable of direct hit while Korean tanks are top attack capable.

xxwzaebd Fire control computers (not the only part of fire control systems) have been around for decades. You dont have any idea of armor if you think its a new or rare element, or that a fire control system is the computer. The Leopard 2 uses one, like every modern MBT built in or after the 1970's. Furthermore upgreaded versions of tanks which did not (leopard 1, T62, M60) in service almost all now possess computerized FCS. Are you actually stupid enough to think one of the most advanced industrial countries in the world is using analogue sights? Please learn at least some BASIC fucking knowledge before speaking.

thenoobfactor Ha ha ha. The Leopard 2 has no fie control computer powerful enough to handle wind ,moisture and other deviations in trajectory as Germany cannot make full power rack mounted computers. You don't know about digital at all. The Leopard 2 has a hybrid analog/rudimentary digital because of this. Germany's most powerful chip is the Tricore which is incapable of handling complex calculation, does not have floating point and is basically an ignition control device for cars. You have never ever touched a real semicon device, let alone a PCB. '70s? The Leopard remains at the early '80s where things like low speed 16 bit devices existed. It simply does not have the required computing power for the calculation of equations and digital signal processing.

hahah T-80 isn't comparable to Leopard 2A4 or M1A1. M1A1 and Leopard 2A4 are A LOT MORE SUPERIOR than the T-80. Russian tanks sacrifice armor for their lighter weight so they aren't even comparable to heavy tanks like M1A1 and Leopard 2A4. Also, around 200 T-80 tanks were destroyed in a very short time during the Chechen War

제가 알기로는 저 T-80U랑 같이 받아온 BMP-3를 러시아에 다시 보내고 그 댓가로 러시아에 남아잇는 T-80U 부품들을 받아와서 좀더 쓴다고 했던 것 같아요.

I know this because we had T-80U and BMP-3 in my unit while I was serving in the Republic of Korea Army. Because Russian FCS and thermal equipments were so horrible, T-80U were upgraded with Korean equipment. T-80U had lower accuracy than Korean K1A1. Its kinda adorable how you're trying to compare T-80 with Leopard 2 and M1 series of tanks, which are world's most heavily armored tanks. M1A2 SEP is probably the world's toughest and best tank along with Leopard 2A7
