Dr Jones gives a few tips on how to keep your senior cat healthy but his advice on nutrition misses the mark. High protein canned food is not the answer!

You're mistaken, Dr. Jones made a very general video. He has videos that go into detail for different diseases and clearly understands the use of pharmaceuticals and the management of phosphorus with the use of binders, etc. He also fed a cat he rescued a fairly high quality canned food which is a low in both phosphorus and moderate in protein. The cat was abandoned to be put down from severe diabetes and he provided the cat 6 years more. I will challenge you, you say you care so much about animals yet you haven't mentioned Weruva WX. You should be singing it's praises as an option to CKD sufferers where the cat has refused the prescription diet. I've even discussed with a specialist involved in a practice with a vet nutritionist who encourages early CKD sufferers to use prescription and offer WX as a secondary meal to prevent muscle loss which is more prevalent in certain cats than others. You should also consider inviting somebody from Elanco or encouraging others to visit their site to read about Varenzin CA-1 and to ask their vets how it can help their CKD cats. I believe it is more important to mention actual medical breakthroughs than debate whether Rachel Fusaro is right or wrong.

NXAU, thanks for the feedback. I've watched many of Dr Jones videos but obviously not all. I can only respond to one at a time and his approach to keeping a senior cat healthy nutritionally was lacking. ..as I explained in the video. Managing CKD obviously would be a different video. He, Dr. Judy, Dr Becker, etc show their extreme bias because they literally cannot recommend a veterinary therapeutic diet. They also totally misrepresent dry food. and sadly, that's what most loving pet parents see when they go to the internet. I'm just trying to do my tiny part to show them there's another perspective they are not hearing. i had not heard of Weruva before starting my channel but the name has come up a few times. I would love to find a great therapeutic diet, that is less expensive to feed so I will def check out this brand. The ones I find with good nutrient profiles, are way more expensive than Hills.Please keep adding your constructive feedback. I appreciate the dialogue!

Animal Doc Rea did a review of Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites. She found it a good food. I feed my cats Weruva chicken on occasion. The 10 oz. cans are affordable. Low in calcium and phosphorus. And it looks like real shredded chicken, not pate. Happy Caturday!

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Unfortunately, Weruva is not cheap. They explicitly describe their sources and produce in a human facility. It is however excellent with the lowest phosphorus of any food in the industry. Diet though is just a portion, medication is available and very helpful. I believe Varenzin will save thousands this year.

Would soaking kibble in water before feeding help raise the moisture level enough?
@nxau120
@nxau120 4 ай бұрын
Yes, but remember wet kibble spoils very fast as it attracts far more bacteria. In its prepared form, it is incredibly resistant to bacteria. Most moldy batches are only due to kibble bags being exposed to far too much moisture.

Soaking kibble is great for moisture and it expands b4 entering their gut which is beneficial versus expanding inside gut.

Why is it that Holistic Vets are all for adding moisture with high protein? CKD cats need low phosphorus and calcium diets. This really baffles my mind? I am perplexed? I mean is there some new research out there that I’m missing? Since when is high protein good for senior cats?

Research from all forms of mammals suggest as we age, we have a lot of protein wastage. CKD cats in particular lose protein in their urine. There are medications available from Boehringer Ingelheim to assist with this. If you're not treating this issue, you may have to provide extra protein to prevent muscle loss. I would not use a general veterinarian in such a situation but would seek out an experienced internist to make that assessment.

@@nxau120 I had a cat who died of CKD that’s why I was asking if there was some new research out there? As far as muscle wasting goes of course we all lose muscle mass as we age. CKD cats however lose weight no matter what you do because they simply do not have an appetite. This is one of the main challenges of managing the disease. That’s why I was wondering if there was some new research because high protein diets always have high phosphorus and calcium. And these two minerals are detrimental to a CKD cats health.

Ashley, I think instead of being science based, which is based on learning from nature, they just stay with nature, and its limitations. Making the video, I realized nature takes us so far, than science takes us further. That's what nutrition science is.

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Agreed Glen. When it comes to CKD diets I am 100 percent science based. Knowing the levels of nutrients to me is absolutely critical. But I do realize I lost my cat a while ago so that’s why I always ask has the research changed? Muscle wasting is an issue for CKD cats but this is usually seen in later stages of kidney disease (usually stages 3 and 4). I do know they now have phosphorus binders out there now for regular cat food. I’m not exactly sure how they work but it is helpful to have them especially for those kitties who will not eat a therapeutic diet. Facts are the only way to know how a diet is working especially for a CKD cat is to have their bloodwork done regularly. I would be very cautious to proceed with a high protein diet for a senior kitty. But that’s just me.

@@AshleyKarys There are negatives to using phosphorus binders, it is calcium carbonate that is the active ingredient. It is a last resort. I am also not fond of Subcut fluids as there eventually leads to low hematocrit due to loss of VitB12. Loss of hematocrit then will require EPO injections but this is where Varenzin CA-1 has been a breakthrough.
