Where we live, if you want a pet sitter that will do more than just keep the chickens alive, it's about $25 a day and up. Free eggs wouldn't cut it here. You essentially paid them less than $3 a day and most people won't work for so little.

I’m very curious as to how much she paid said farm hands to clean feed collect eggs secure her livestock because giving them the eggs to sell is maybe less than $6 per day if someone is interested in buying farm fresh eggs unless she already had loyal customers who would have been still buying while she was away … however sucks for the chickens

Sucks you have to deal with people like that. I'm sure you were just trying to help them but hey, like you said, weirdly many people that really need extra money won't do a good enough job to get more work. Thus the cycle continues.

Wow, that place is so cool, it’s huge, I could totally be happy there, but maybe not because it is so big. I don’t really know what’s happened or what you’re going to do, besides living in your little cabin, but sheesh, seeing it, holy cow, you’ve got so much to do! Downsizing is so hard, I should say purging is so difficult, it’s so weird, we live in a house built in 1954, there is no freakin storage at all, like really, did they not have a lot of stuff? It really makes you think, like what the hell, I think we are frugal, but right now we are cleaning out our garage again! Truth be told, I’m thinking, if you do a lot of stuff yourselves you end up with a lot of stuff, like extra building supplies and what not. Anyway, you’re getting there, and by the way, you’ve got great design sense, love the colors and the space.

This place is wonderful, and I could be happy here, but it’s in the wrong location (20 hours from family) & it’s just too much house for us. I think we assumed we’d have more kids by now and that’s just not happened for us. With all the moving we’ve done it was easy to end up with 2 or 3 of things and not even notice it. 🫠 I’ll get into the garage story and explain how that ended up that way soon. It’s crazy and was totally out of our control. We actually have friends being fined $100/day for the same thing…

I got out after 15 years as well… still here in Hubert but looking for change. It seems like you guys have similar values as us so after digging into Missouri it seems so affordable for land! Take care guys 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hi Megan, I’ve really enjoyed your channel. We are older but have just finished building our home in Tennessee. We have our barn full of stuff we are now beginning to sort and go through to get rid of. It is a big slow process and we don’t have a little child to raise at the same time!! Hats off to you through this process. I wanted to share a tip with you about the chickens. This is long but I think worth the read. You can look this up online for more info., It’s not new. Numerous years ago I read about it on one of the chicken forums. Instead of bedding like straw or shavings, get bags of sand, regular building sand from Lowe’s, the cheapest they have in stock. Put it about 4” deep in the floor of the coop, we even fill the nesting boxes. The sand will absorb all the moisture and leaves all the droppings on top. It lasts a long time and when you clean it all you need is a small tined leaf rake and shovel. The droppings rake up off the top easily into a pile, which I scoop into a bucket and dump on the compost pile. When I clean the sand out for new sand usually once or twice a year, I just add it where I need some in landscape dirt or toss it out into the run where it gets rained on but keeps run from getting muddy. It’s also good on their feet. I’ve never had any foot issues since using it. The best part is, it does not smell. No stink like shavings. You will be amazed. You can clean up the droppings and add more sand as needed. It’s also a big time saver. If you want to see some pics of mine, just let me know. You can see pics of our build on #ourlittlebarndominium under @countrycharisma on instagram. Blessings to you and Woody as you complete your build and prep to live in your cabin. Happy New Year!!

Wow! What a thoughtful comment 🥹 I’ll have to give that sand bedding a try!!! The day I get to park in my garage again is the day I throw a party. We had such a rough ride the with county and ended up with an entire shipping container needing to be emptied with about a week’s notice before we even finished the house. I’ll definitely check out your build!

I promise you won’t be disappointed! It makes life so much easier with chickens!!❤️ I also keep a kitty litter scoop hanging on the coop for the nesting boxes for those hens that want to roost in them and poop! Quick clean up! We had a similar moving mess bc we sold our 120 acre farm to downsize to 28. We had barns full of equipment and so much stuff. We had to be out in 2 weeks and hired ppl to clear everything out and move it to our only building on the new farm, a single barn, while we packed up the house and moved into our rv for the next 2 years. Our barn still looks a lot worse than your garage!🤣. It is our current big project so we can get our workshop permanently set up and park atvs etc. Seems ongoing, but we keep plugging away at it. Your barndo looks beautiful!! You and Woody have done a fabulous job. It will all happen in due season, one day at a time, enjoy the journey and your precious little boy and keep smiling!

So glad to be back! Not necessarily because of the house, I could have stayed at the cabin forever, but because I want to knock out more projects here. The closer we are to “done” the closer we are to going full time in Arkansas!

❤️ that was a rough one! We love our birds and I never imagined people would be so cruel to them. I’m ready to be out here full time, have the house in NC sold, and be able to start growing our flock here in the mountains. Will need a lot better fence for these predators though. 😅

Keep your head high... and you're back to what you know... regardless of how people act.. you know whats best for what you have. other people will never understand it.. they have their own problems. let e'm sort it out themselves.. You are doing good.. thinking they will be helpful. Just be how you are as always... you will learn new things, experience newer experiences, So keep on smiling and keep on growing at your own pace. Suggestion: 1. indoor slippers will not do in wet slippery muddy condition, you need to get some Oil/Mud Rubber boots (any color or Pattern), i worked in an oil field once.. in regular boots and believe me.. once i slipped and fell into the mud... am not going to wear regualr boots... so Oil/mud rubber boots are worn everytime. New wishes and blessing for the Newyear, Regards from Singapore, GOD bless.

And thank you for the kind words! We are certainly doing our best to work within our limits and make the most of our time & energy while we have it. The ultimate goal is the build another home in Arkansas and sell or rent this one out…but that’s a long way away. Gotta work on all these projects as we can and take the lucky breaks (like these cabinets) when they come!

Y'all have an excursion? We have an excursion too. And a white 4 doorf350 4x4 and a 4x4 dodge truck. If you use wood shaving in your coop and run you will avoid all that. 6 to 8 inches works great to keep things fresh for months

I’m looking for a good cover crop to throw down, it I don’t want to invest too much. When woody gets back from this next erecting job we’re going to finally finish fencing the whole back of the property for them to free range. We already have all the stuff, just need to finish cutting the property lines and get to work! So many problems eliminated when we get that done!

First, wallpaper only looks good if you do the entire visible area of the wall being covered. Second, wallpaper is put up by first gluing the wall, then gluing the paper and then fusing the two. This is so that it can't fall down easily by accidents. Third, cabinetry looks good when it's consistent, and if your planning on selling your barniminium, which seems likely, you should go less custom and more traditional for resell value. Lastly, you should have trusted your animals to someone you trusted to treat them the way you do instead of hiring someone who knew they wouldn't be watched. Next time, if you're going to do that, install cameras and inform them you'd be watching. They'd be more willing to put in more effort, or you'd be more aware of the situation. Either way, Hindsight is 20/20. My family did this growing up on a farm. Though it was much different than today. Today is easier.

So I thought you were selling the Barndominium and moving full time to the cabin. Maybe not? planning to keep both places going? Btw, I was always wondering why you would move from NC to the Midwest. What is wrong with NC? So many people moving to NC from all over the county. I lived in NC for 8 years and traveled to every one of the 100 countries for my job. I got to know it very well. Somehow, though, it never fell like home..

We would love to sell the barndominium and go full time at the off grid property tomorrow, but the house just isn’t totally finished. We have the materials to finish it, just need to spend the time. Things like garage lights & added electrical, fencing the back yard, building out the laundry room and the master closet, finishing the landscaping… tons of projects that have to happen. Plus, if we split our time & stay here while woody is working (we’re doing a video on that in a couple of weeks), Wade and I will have a very solid home base to stay in while he travels for 1-3 weeks at a time. NC just isn’t free enough. I feel like it’s becoming a big parking lot, especially where we are in the easternmost portion of the state.
