Rogue One is a thoroughly entertaining Star Wars movie movie with plenty of fun new characters that expanded the universe and fit pretty perfectly into the existing saga.
However. It has some issues. And I believe you could address three of them by doing nothing more cutting a few scenes out of the movie. Here's what I mean.
Thanks again to Summer for helping edit this video. You can find her let's play channel here:

That is also my problem with the Last Jedi. I had no issues with the story beats, but having too many focus characters made the middle portion of the movie a bloated mess. There was about 4 different perspectives that we were jumping between constantly, and I found Poes story about leadership completely unconvincing and shallow. I felt that conflict would’ve been more natural coming from the crew, himself or between him and Finn.

Given what we actually saw of Jynn, her dialogue with Cassian would just be.... ...about Saw: "We must have HOPE about Saw." ...about Bode: "We must have HOPE that he is who he says he is." Like, the movie TELLS us that she's this jaded criminal, but then SHOWS us her saving a baby in her first action scene and constantly taking the moral high route.

In all fairness, it's because he knows precisely what the new order is capable of that makes him so terrified that really sold the new order to me in the force awakens. When he actually used a blaster, at least in force awakens he had never missed a single shot. Then episode 8 made him a kinda useless two bit character. I was less keen on that one. XD

Actually the biggest change i wanted to make was a scene that could make captain marvel all of the things the press said she could be. First id include rick jones. For those who dont know is a friend to bruce banner. He becomes a bomb. But really in the comics hes more like a professional sidekick. Hes kinda just super helpful. But thats not what im going off on. Rick jones has a tie to mar vel and the negabands. I want to include them in the story. Put her and carol out in space and have carol shoot down the last ship that shoots down mar vel. She falls badly injured and tells carol to blast the engine. (This puts some respect to her name as mar vel being killed by a simple blaster is like goku blue getting shot by a lazer gun and working. ) mar vel dies and carol shoots the drive becoming who she is now. But because she is there rick is left stuck in the negative zone. For about 30 years. In the comics the negative zone (thanks to jonathon hickman) is a natural nexus between worlds. You could introduce annihilus and the annihilation wave by doing this. By freeing rick from the negative zone carol a person tied to her and her mentors past could boost her position to leader as she is the one to look for answers from. (Id also make operation pegasus a travel through dimension type of project not the ship. The ship should be a personal to surprise. No ondme should know that mar is planning to make this engine and steal the tesseract.

I dunno, Mon Ami'; the Jedha street fight seemed so 'ripped from the headlines'; and the Death Star 'Eclipsing' the local sun before blowing away Jedha was an awe inspiring piece of filmwork--I won't even mention the visuals of the 'extinction level event' caused by a single reactor ignition. And the star fighter raid on Eadu was awesome, too. Eadu had a small throw away bit to it that nobody seems to mention: when Bodhi Rook guns down the troops chasing Jyn and Cassian using the Shuttles onboard weapons, he lets go of the controls in shock/horror, as K2 mockingly says: well done; You're a rebel now!

I actually love Vader being in the movie for one reason: subverting expectations. Not only were we spoiled that Vader existed in the movie by promos, but it also makes no narrative sense that Vader *isn't* in the movie. By revealing him early, you dissipate the tension that "oh duh, of course Vader is in the movie" while simultaneously setting the expectation that "he's a completely wasted cameo." Cue the hallway scene.

Another Fantastic episode. You found a completely different problem than I had with the movie, and yet that I agreed with as you talked about it. You then solved it better than I could have hoped to. Just wow. My problem with the movie is that all of the main character deaths feel the same. They're all victorious, redemptive, or some combination of the two. I did a concept rewrite where the deaths elicited different emotions, and thus the audience never grew numb.

@Derek McCumber I prefer an ambitious failure than the boring regurgitated sludge that was episode 7. Doubly so for rogue one and solo.

I agree almost completely with this. I love the original Drath Vader introduction. I get that it doesn’t add anything but I still love it, it’s just so fun. Maybe include it as a Deleted scene or something. Aside from that, this would have greatly improved the movie. Great work as always Nando!

While I love Rogue One, they have issues. The hopping between planets sceneries, lovable yet forgottable support characters and the issues with the main characters's POV. ( Jyn, Cassian and Buddy ) And as you mention, the representation of ambigous morality and show a more darker side from the Rebellion. As for your commentary about Vader's bad joke, Rando, you should known by now that he always had a dark sense of humor. Thanks to Anakin's sarcasm. It's within his character.

Yeah the joke just feels so strange when you compare it to all of the Vader we see in the original trilogy.

I would actually switch how you have Jyn and Cassian thinking of Bodhi at first. Cassian does have hope and idealism but it is really more of a big picture thing. He struggles with the idea that Galen is worth assassinating, but he’s definitely willing to do it. Bodhi represents possible redemption, like Galen does, and having Jyn believe in Bodhi would make sense because she clearly wanted to believe in her father after Jedha. Idk I have a massive headache so this might be incoherent lol.

writing only re-edits of films is a whole novel 2nd channel idea. but sales would have to be entirely underground in most cases i imagine.

I love the idea of the cuts. I felt the pacing was weird too, but I couldn't place what about it wasn't working. As usual, your rewrites provide the perfect clarity. Now, in regards to Vader...I'm having a hard time swallowing the idea of losing the "careful not to choke on your ambitions" line because it is SO Vader and SO badass. But thinking about how if there was no mention of him being in the movie (scrub him from the trailers too) and then we get that absolutely iconic hallway scene??? That just might be worth it.

Loved the video man, great as always. Another thing I could add on to the point at 5:52 as to "Why should I care about the characters?" is why do we care about watching war documentaries and listening to veterans talk about their fallen comrades? Granted this is a fictional universe but it's in the same vein as it imo. To commemorate the people who've fallen for the greater good and sacrificed themselves so that the world could have a chance to be a better place is something I personally feel is very important and special.

The Vader reveal as we got it was awesome; if we did it your way, I think heads would have literally exploded in the theater. Great video as always. I didn’t like the interrogation monster either, but just counted it as a throwaway character, which is the problem.

There's one more Rouge One change I would make, to make things more interesting. We, don't hear Cassian and the Rebel leader talk about the assassination mission. We see things from Jyn's side, see them talking, but don't hear the dialogue. This makes the turn later on more shocking and more in the moment of the "will he won't he?" Rather than letting it stew for a longer time.

You hit the nail on the head of what's wrong with this movie; because we already know what Saw and the defector's deals are ahead of time, Jyn and Cassian don't even register as being the main characters even.
