As an American I expected to have to make a few adjustments living in Kenya but someone could have prepared me.
I can roll with anything within reason, but the surprises kept coming at me daily for the 1st three weeks. I finally hit my stride in week 4 - thank goodness.
I think I might just have to write a couple letters to President Ruto informing him of some of the things I need him to address right away😋😋

Welcome! If you're now seeing this video, you're likely new to the channel. Given that the channel is 6 months old and I had very few subscribers at the time of this video, my videos weren't being served up by the algorithm to most of you. Please take the time to go through the channel. I think that you'll enjoy what you find. Be sure to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE AND SHARE the ones that you enjoy with friends and family. Sharing will help promote the channel to other folks interested in ❤Kenya ❤. BTW, the landlord upgraded the internet to the property. Also, I'm definitely aware that this was isolated to my specific area. I've already visited Nairobi so please check out those videos as well. I'm prepping for my final move to Diani. Hope to see many of you very soon. Asante sana 🙏🙏

Welcome to Kenya Debs. Negotiotion aka bargaining is a way of life here. It's a culture. I subscribed when you first came to visit and had a just a few hundred subscribers. You've grown so much so quickly. Your narration is hilarious that one is not put off even by criticism. You tell a story like a true Kenyan. Hope you stay long enough to be able to learn Swahili well enough to have story time in Swahili even if just once. That would be something. Enjoy your stay.

Hi Debs👋- Former resident of Kenya here. I lived there for about 4 years while my dad was posted in Nairobi way back in the day. Your experiences are definitely funny, and I can relate to quite a couple. Though the proposal bit, I never really saw this happen except in Mombasa and most of the time it was joke😅. Though I will say this: I’ve always loved the country for its uniqueness and energy and From cheap commodities to attractions, I just couldn’t get enough of it all! I managed to shortly visit in 2018 and the developments were mad! I had left the Thika Super highway under construction so you wouldn’t believe the surprise on my face when my Uber told me that what we were driving on was the complete product😂 It was simply put amazing. I also stayed in an apartment but we did have backup power and the internet really never let me down but I wouldn’t care less because as you said, with the whole of Kenya’s beauty at my disposal- why waste my time on a screen!!! And finally (and I’ll probably be in the doghouse with my fiancé for this) THE WOMEN! I’m just going to put it out there that Kenyan women are gems- natural beauties with such warm and bubbly personalities, I honestly think God had a special production line just set aside for them!! I always like to say that one day in the future I shall return to raise my family there. For the four years I was there, I still can’t help but somehow feel like someone is talking about my motherland every time they talk about Kenya! Until later rafiki, Nakutakia kila la Heri!👋

Wow. It appears that Kenya has indeed left a lasting and positive impression on you which I would imagine after 4yrs of living there. Nice that you got to revisit as well. I see nothing but upside for Kenya. I joked about my internet escapades but after 3 weeks I hit my stride and never looked back. It really was a function of the property owner who never needed to upgrade because his regular clients were vacationers. I however needed to work and after I brought my concerns to him, the entire property was upgraded to faster internet service. The proposals didn't surprise me because it was very evident that many European men also were on the hunt for brides as well. 😂 Thanks for watching and I hope that I will keep you watching. Take care. Well

I can roll with anything and it is funny. Share the "I need a vacation...." video with your Texas friends. However it will be a tough sell because Americans lack cultural awareness regarding anything Africa. I plan on doing my part 1 video at a time. When I started this channel in July, the goal was to change America hearts and minds about Kenya. I had no idea that Kenyans would watch. That was a pleasant surprise. So with you behind me, I will get Americans to think Kenya. I now have 3 family members who will be visiting Kenya in the next week. Walls are coming down. Lastly, on each zoom call, I make sure that everyone on the call back in the U.S. know that I am calling in from Kenya. They normally would have no knowledge of Kenya. The fact that I'm actually working from Kenya also says that you can do more than vacation in Kenya.

Thank you for the compliment. Where did you travel to Kenya from? I hear you loud and clear. I knew that I was going to move to Kenya but I needed to understand the logistics so I came on vacation first. So yes vacation and living are definitely 2 different things but NOT as drastic as you might think. However, folks stopped treating me like a tourist because they saw me everyday so essentially I wasn't bothered as much 😊 Once the locals recognized me, I just got a wave. Once I got used to how I was going to feed myself daily and not eat out every single day, that is when I began feeling like I knew what was going on. BTW, all of this is only possible because I work remotely so essentially it doesn't matter too much where I reside. Hopefully you too will be able to do some remote work from Kenya. Thanks for watching the video. Be sure to watch the Nairobi ones as well. Take care.

Hehehe, yours was a bit unfortunate. 1. I think for the internet it was unfortunate. You only got a poor provider. Safaricom, Kenyan's biggest internet provider often provides reliable, speedy connections especially if you are in remote areas. But there are also other services. 2. For the power, I also work at home but in Nairobi and I rarely us experience power outage. 3. I started using the Pre-paid electricity this year and I think it is good, you can recharge the amount you think you may use for a a day, a week, or a month. You only need to know how to buy what we call electricity tokens through Mpesa, and there are lots of instructions online how to go about that. 4. Yeah, you have to bargain alot. Especially if you are not a local, you have to pay what we call a tourist tax. But even if you are a local, sometimes you may settle for the price of something or a service at a higher cost if you don't know how to bargain. Of course, there are honest people who will not take advantage. 5. About that thing about offering a woman, it is a strange one. Methinks, maybe the lady might have been an escort. Keep on enjoying!
@RichardDebs
@RichardDebs Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your very thoughtful response. I'm all in with Safaricom now with a good bundle and a portal wifi hotspot. The internet issues were because this landlord had never upgraded to faster internet service. He has now so I've very pleased. However, he can't control the power outages. There is an intermittent one daily. Even if it is just for 3 mins, it kicks me off an active Zoom Video call. I've now taken to using my portal hotspot if I know the call is important and I don't want any hiccups.
