Invincible Painting Basics

The new website: www.diyinvinciblepainting.onl...
On my website, there is lots of info on brushes, rollers, scrapers and more content added each week. Also, I think you will find the short video tutorials (more coming) packed with tricks of the trade that I can guarantee will help you become a much better diy home painter.
I show you how I treat a water stain so you can paint over it with out it bleeding through your new coat of paint.
Knowing what to use is the trick here. There are many different brands and they will all do the same thing. Just make sure it's 'shellac' based or cleans up with metholated spirits or rubbing alcohol. Easy peasy!

Im in my first house and am new to DIY and painting and as you said people would have, I've been painting over the water mark with new layers everyday with no success. Today I have got some of the spray and the stain has instantly been painted over! Thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge with newbies like me!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’ve been working on “fixing up” our 14 year old home. Your videos have been invaluable. I’ve already learned so much! We took down room wide shelving the previous owners installed + I started patching the drywall damage from it this week. I’m excited to prep for painting and slowly make our house our own in time!

Thank you very much for your sharing. I do the same as you had said. The water stain on my bathroom ceiling disappeared. You’re my great helper. Appreciate sharing of your experiences on KZfaq. Follow up: Actually I had sprayed that Zinsser BIN for 4 to 5 layers over prior to water based flat white ceiling paint. More than 2 layers there!

VERY HELPFUL TO ME, I had a few spots on my wall, my pain is a very light crème and I watched your video and learned wow, the paint won't cover the stains. if you have a water stain coming through say on a wall , ceiling wipe down .let the stain dry out then paint over with oil based undercoat ( thin it a bit with some meths , then apply over the stain area ( ensure you paint bigger area than Stain , let that dry ….then use the water based original emulsion over . Simples or you can buy the expensive stain blocker

I have a question about kilz oil based primer/sealer? I have been using this for my new house to cover wallpaper. We will then spray homax knockdown and texture after which dries we will be painting it. We have torn and smoothed the loose parts of the wallpaper as well. My question is in regards to what you were saying about stains/mold on walls. As long as I use the damp rag and get the surface clear and white again then put kilz...should the wall be good for painting? I’m trying to avoid replacing/repairing any drywall if possible.
@RickBushell1958
@RickBushell1958 6 жыл бұрын
very brave going over wallpaper. Hope some places don't come loose. I remember quite a few times we painted over wallpaper but we first coated it with B.I.N (a zinsser product) and it worked quite well. Like you, we checked intire wall for any areas needing attention. However, I always preferred to remove the paper. Easy when you know the tricks, (don't need a steamer). Good luck mate

+Chuckles I explain a bit on water base and oil base paints here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa6EaNqnqavNdGg.html Just remember, whether you are using water or oil, you cannot paint one over the other without sanding and undercoating. First, after watching the video I mentioned above, sand your surface and apply 1 coat of oil base 'All purpose (or General purpose) undercoat. Then apply what ever it is you are using. In regards to painting over BIN, I haven't had any problems painting anything right over the top of it.

@RickBushell1958
@RickBushell1958 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marshal, unless you have the original can of paint, there is no way of knowing. However, not all is lost. :) If you're simply wanting to treat and 'touch-up' it's not really going to work. It will look a lot better, but without matching the existing paint color, it won't work. Is there an issue of repainting the entire ceiling once treated? That's how I would do it.

I have stains that are yellow in color from the roof leaking. The roof has been temporarily fixed and is going to be replaced sometime soon. There is no visible mold but what if there is hidden mold underneath where you can't see it? Should it be harmful or not? It doesn't smell or anything either but when we got the place these stains were there. I am worried about mold. Basically I freak out over it.

Well, I'm no expert in the ill health affects of mold, just good at knowing how to paint over it. Sorry I couldn't of been more help to you.

Hi, very helpful video thanks. I notice now I have treated the area and painted over, the area is noticably different texture after painting to the rest of the ceiling. My roller adds a slight texture but it seems to look different in the area I have treated. Any tips ? Keep painting over again ?

There can be lots of reasons why unfortunately. The type of paint, how thick it is when applying, how you are applying it as a diy, the length and type of the nap. (Nap is the material on your roller) Being a different paint and roller this time around. And a whole lot more reasons. Just too many variables without being there to look at it. Sorry I couldn't solve this for you.

@@RickBushell1958 thanks very much for the comment. I have painted the whole ceiling two coats again after the treatment. The area with stain block underneath still looks different. I'll try another coat of paint, I'm worried it's damaged plaster

@@RickBushell1958 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7JplL2lurytinU.html I made a video :) The smooth area is the area I treated and the stains are all gone, you can see the area around it immediately differs in texture, the treated area remains smooth. I use a thick roller to try to add a bit of texture. I also think I have painted before the treatment is dry which is why i have the bubbled texture. (it actually looks worse on the video than it really is)

would you recommend removing the paint over the stain or is it ok to paint the BIN straight over it?

I've always treated straight over the paint without any issues ever. Have fun.

It's just a can of B-I-N primer stain blocker. Most paint stores would carry this product.

Randy Clark any paint store should carry this product or something very similar. Simply check it’s shellac based and it will work.

Hello great video. I used an oil based spray to cover up some water stains on my ceiling. 24 hours later i could tell where i sprayed but the stains seemed to be gone. After that, i primed the entire ceiling with a stain blocking water based primer (both spray and primer were KILZ products). I checked on it 24 hours after i applied the primer and the stains had come back. the paint I was going to use next is water based also. should I go over the water spots again with the spray and then apply paint? or what should i for this situation? thanks for the help!

+Joseph Mica The problem is the water base products. There good products, just misused. You can get away with using oil based products but only if use both oil base undercoat/sealer and also finish with an oil base finish, eg enamel. Most today wont come anywhere near oil base products so you have to use a shellac based (cleanup with rubbing alcohol/methylated spirits) product. This is a must if you are going to finish with a water base paint. Unfortunately for you, your KILZ 'water base' stain blocker doesn't work all too well with water stains. Go over your stains with a sealer that HAS to be cleaned up using rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits. Read the back of the can under 'clean up', it will state what is needed for cleaning up. And then you can go over the area with your water base paint with no problems. Hope this helps

+Invincible Painting Basics do you think if I go over the stain again with the KILZ oil based spray and then use oil based ceiling paint over the water based primer it would fix my problem?

+Joseph Mica Get yourself a can of Zinsser B I N . Use this to paint over your stains. Then paint your ceiling with any water base paint you are using, If you decide to go with the oil base paint as your finish coat, you don't need to use your oil spray but I would recommend to coat your ceiling first with oil base undercoat. This is providing a key for your finish (enamel) coat. Also, it's a good practice to never paint over any water base material with oil base enamel without first applying a coat of oil base undercoat. Personally, I would use the Zinsser. Much easier and when you need to recoat your ceiling at some point in time, it's just another coat of water base material. www.zinsseruk.com/product/b-i-n/ good luck mate
