NONNA'S COOKBOOK → www.rosiemaio.com
One year later, here is a much requested part two of my most watched video "what i eat in a week at my Nonna Rosa's house" in Calabria, Italy 🥰 I hope you enjoy!
[about me]
Hi my name is Rosie, I'm 26 and my life is a bit confusing so i'm writing this lol.
To make it easy:
- I was born in Northern Italy, in the region of Veneto
- My whole family still lives there (mom, dad and my little sister Marty)
- I moved to Toronto, Canada, at 19 all alone to ✨find myself✨ (spoiler: it didn't work, i got more lost if anything).
So, I live half my life in Italy and half my life in Canada.
Also, my mom is from Moldova (country in Eastern Europe) and my dad is from Calabria (region in Southern Italy) and both my grandmas still live there. So you’ll occasionally see me going there as well.
I hope this clears things up a bit.. or maybe makes them more confusing lol.
I don’t know, i tried 😄

So glad you're enjoying the video 🥰 To anyone asking about the restaurant in Sicily, it's called "Ristorante Il Padrino" and it's in the town of Forza d'Agrò; Also I really wanted to make a recipe book with nonna this year but we didn't have enough time.. two weeks went by so fast and because nonna cooks without measuring anything, we would have had to remake all the recipes and measure all the ingredients/cooking times. Hopefully next year 🤞🏻I tried to include all the steps of each recipe so hopefully you'll still be able to recreate them 😊💕

Oh I would LOVE that. Also, to save your Nonna grief lol I'm sure you can guesstimate and not measure everything super precisely because well, it's kind of half the fun to cook when it's not so precise really! Rosie, this was SUCH a joy and such a comfort and delight-- thank you endlessly for taking us along, really your video's are my favorite and I learned so much about food ! You and your family are so lovely. :))) It makes me re-think what priorities I have, and definitely family and good food surely is one of the most special things we can have. x

I think to average ppl in America this IS luxury, i was kinda shook to see the amount of food theyre able to buy in a day. I feel like that would easily be $120-150+ (per day) in the US, but ik in the european countryside food is actually affordable and much cheaper.

Unbelievable that there are places in the world like this that treat everyday like this. Food is a celebration. Everything is fresh from the market. Time is less important and eating nourishing and full meals throughout the day is normal. And coming together to sit around the table each and every time…unbelievably important. 3rd time watching this because it just gives me so much inspiration as an American who is dying to travel to Italy someday and who also hopes to be able to give my future children more of this type of experience surrounding food, family and connection.

To be fair she is on vacation at her grandma's house... I'm American too and we do all this too when visiting relatives for a while. Americans have bbqs and cook together and do all this stuff, minus of course the fresh market with individual vendors and awesome produce etc. Not saying Italy isn't special but the comments here be giving all these Tony Bourdain speeches about how unbelievable a normal family vacation is. The thing is there are so many broken families in the US and hell Northwestern Europe too, that leave many people unfortunately completely on their own or just with one parent. Americans belittle those who live with family, or boast about being 'independent' and moving three states away, well this is the consequence of all that alienating culture- we watch videos of southern Europeans and wish we were them!

@@krislv9219 They definitely work! But Italians also get more holidays than the average North American. I believe the minimum is 4 weeks per year, plus all the national calendar days. The minimum is about 32 days a year in total. Plus you get a city/town/saint day off, something like 15 days off for your wedding, and a bunch of other random days/time off depending on your employment contract. And, if you've been working at a job for a while, you'll probably have many days off to burn! When visiting my family, they always seemed to have a lot of time off in the bank to spend with us. Wonderful system lol.

Yes! Completely agree! I'm native to New York and grew up in an Italian household, older generations from Italy. I moved to San Jose California and lived there for 10 years. So much is similar! Some of my most cherished memories in California are cooking with the older latinas. I speak Italian, and now I speak Spanish as well. I am a chef and one of my favorite things to make is Carnitas. And it's awesome to take the carnita meat, add some to tomato sauce, add beans and ditalini... It's a Mexican Italian fusion pasta fagioli. This is TMI but I love seeing Mexican Americans see the similarity between the two cultures!

just had a little breakdown because my whole family is from Calabria, my parents were born there too: both families moved to the north when they were very little and started a new life here. They eventually met in their twenties and found out they both came from two different little towns in Cosenza. Thankfully I managed to grow up surrounded by calabrese culture, food, dialect and traditions. Your nonna seems so precious and everything she does and says reminds me so much of my nonna… unfortunately I lost her a month ago after five years of dementia. She was my best friend and my favorite person to ever exist, she sacrificed everything for her children and grandchildren (i’m the youngest of 8 girls, she used to call us her “8 stars”) and she taught me what being rich actually means. Grazie per questo vlog tenerissimo mi ha fatta sentire a casa. ❤

My mum died last year.. She always had a knife in her hands and she chopped vegetables and potatoes in her hands like this, too. I was always telling her off, as she' 'spoke with her hands' and that knife became a lethal weapon, lol. I especially miss her today as this vlog reminds me of her. I'm from UK and we always ate healthy, well balanced food growing up in the 70s. Meals were the important times. We were lucky to never have to do without, as others did in those days. I've lived in several Countries, and am now back to Europe again,( near to the beautiful Mediterranean Sea) We eat a delicious Healthy Mediterranean based diet. Food is a mainstay of special occasions but its like that in our home daily. Always ,if you're lucky enough to live with family ,gather together to eat and spend quality time at the table! Ban TV dinners or teens eating in their rooms. It brings people together ( even though we are a family of just 4) and memories are made of simple things, such as cooking and eating together x) Good Health to everyone

As an English person this genuinely makes me grieve for a life i've never had! It won't be the same for all, but I know for most British people our food and family culture has been lost somewhere down the line. The way your grandmother shows her love through her hard work and cooking makes me genuinely emotional. It's so warm, I can't explain it. I know no life is perfect and all come with their difficulties but something in the essence of this lifestyle and communion is what i feel is seriously missing in our culture. I love your videos and hope that you can carry some of this tradition with you through your life!

I live in the U.S. and when I hear people from here talking about their experience of traveling to Italy to the fancy places and always say it was not the best. I always say, go to the rural areas, go where the locas eat, that is the real Italy.

As I was watching, I was surprised that my mind went "Now THIS is how you're supposed to live life." In our modern world, we're so transfixed with making so much money and wanting to buy all the latest gadgets and fashion or eat at the fanciest places. There is nothing wrong with that. But then it takes away the true values of living. Living slowly, mindfully, and presently. You and your family are very very blessed, my friend. Thank you for sharing your Nonna's recipes with us! 💖

My neighbors across the street were a family who had an Italian bakery. I remember once locking myself out or my apartment without shoes or coat and I ran across to use their phone. When I went into the bakery kitchen, the dad, who was an elderly man at the time, was sitting at the table cutting up a slice of watermelon. Without a word, he pointed to a chair for me to sit and handed me a piece of cut up watermelon. I remember that gesture of fatherly hospitality with deep affection.

I love everything about this. From her aunties blue toenails, to the fact that they eat dessert with nearly every meal, to the fact that her Nona is a beast in the kitchen. It’s all so beautifully raw and real. Love this so so much

Back in the days, pastries were very expensive and people only ate them during special occasions (especially in southern Italy). When you were invited to someone's house for dinner or had to go somewhere, It was good costume to bring some pastries as a gift

This is the Italian culture, but more generally the Mediterranean culture. This is what gives us the lifeblood, it is the lifeblood that all the Mediterranean countries have. That great sea and all the land around that sea is what gives us this hospitality, this love for the family, this love for food, for meat and fish, for our weather. The Mediterranean sea and this land is what makes us so friendly and happy to meet other cultures and people, it is the culture of sharing everything. I am happy to live in the best place in the world ☺🥰 Long live all Mediterranean countries and all Mediterranean brothers and sisters. We have to be proud of our sea and our lands! 💖

That's a very sweeping statement. There are good hospitable people in all countries. Italy has just as many bad people as elsewhere. Sicily has been tormented by the mafia for generations.

I am from Turkey and I couldn’t agree more! Even though there are many nice places on earth for me Mediterranean Region is simply the best: the Coast, sea, mild climate, landscapes/mountains, FOOD and the people😍 I feel so lucky to be part of that experience and life style😍🥰🧿🧿

It's amazing how unbelievably similar this is to whenever I visit my grandma in rural Philippines. It's non stop cooking and going to the market all day everyday and going to beaches or parks and visiting other relatives and having another big meal. I miss it so much this is such a nice video.

I love that these videos are helping to normalize healthy people eating a healthy amount! So many people make diet vlogs where they eat a salad or granola bar every day. This is refreshing!!

Also notice how they go for walks after the meals and aren't sedentary in the way they live is equally important. Plus their food doesn't have the garbage corporations put in them like preservatives, hormones, "natural flavors" and other nasty chemicals to cut costs or increase shelf life like here in the U.S. Which is partially what is making everyone obese.

@@Ideo7Z So many people talk about the weight loss and improved well being after living, and eating, places outside of the US for pretty much any period of time. It’s mind blowing how much gets swept under the rug here.

What an amazing experience. As an Indian guy living away from home and family in Spain, this video gave me goosebumps. I have done Almost everything you and your family did in this video with my family. Same picnic day in almost the same pine forest, with bedsheets from home 😂, and family dinners. Haven't seen my family for 5 years now because of work. My Nonna was also same, always feeding everyone and not willing to rest, sadly she passed away. I hope you get to enjoy many more happy years with your family. Good luck 😀
