Another daily board repair video. I am going to do my best to keep these going daily. Every day, at least one educational piece will be uploaded that you can hopefully use to take a dead Macbook and make it work again. Now, it is time to do your part and find some recycling center or ewaste facility that is piling these, and follow the instructions here to make them work. GO!

The moral complicity though of selling somebody a premium product that has so many design flaws in it. To repair it is like selling somebody a repaired racing tyre for their Ferrari. It could all go so wrong and be very expensive. Preserving that shit? Is a distance I'm not too comfy on going. Drugs can be cleaner than Mac books 😂

I saw You measured 13V on pp bus, the caps withstand 16V ( afaik at 25•Celsius, ) i know from previous tantal caps i used that they change the caracteristics with temperature and age. And the one You replaced i think sits in an area which gets hot. I design electronics and i try to design it in a way that it only fails if it gets heavily abused by a customer. Your videos are a inspiration to me, most of all how NOT to design circuits. In a design i used similar usb-c circuits. They also spontaneously died in test. After modifying the circuit it survived the tests. Electronic engineer is a hard job. I think every day how to make things that they last eternal. One rule i made for me..... no tantal caps!!!!. They are small cool and useful but mistreated a ticking circuitbreaker. Thank You Louis for Your work You do.

@iaadsi 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you just need a big tank, C0G would take up half the board, X7R is basically snake oil and aluminum electrolytics evaporate and die in 10 years. Tantalum is the only way at that point. But putting a 16V tantalum on a 12V nominal line is lunacy, those things literally explode when overvolted even for a few microseconds. I probably won't even put a 25V one in there.

@nitrocaster

@@iaadsi Polymer tantalum capacitors typically require 10-20% voltage derating, so putting 16V cap on a 12V line is perfectly fine - you have more than 30% room to account for voltage derating.
@michvod
@michvod 4 жыл бұрын
@@nitrocaster Derating is fine as long the temperature doesn't exceed 25-35 deg. C. This is area near CPU which gets near 90 deg. C hot all the time ;) You need to have 40-50% derating at that high temperatures
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC 4 жыл бұрын
The last time I really, absolutely had to use tantalum caps to squeeze the most out of density/esr/leakage considerations, it was a circuit that only had to operate once in its entire life -- only for a few tens of seconds before the entire parent assembly exploded. Sometimes it's nice to have a firm terminus on expected operating life. For my own repairs, if I open up something that died to find that it's an obvious design issue that promoted a particular component to fail, I go out of my way to either find a part that's better suited to the application, or I'll try to make other modifications (e.g. adding a heat sink to a TO-220 transistor that dissipates 4W under nominal use (no shit)). As far as I'm concerned, "fixing" something that failed due to a design flaw requires addressing the design flaw. That said, there isn't much room in a laptop to make changes, especially not regarding the thermal design.

I don't think he hates Apple entirely. I suspect he hates the nosedive path of greed it has taken as a company that others follow. Otherwise he probably wouldn't give two $hits about it emotionally. I have the fondest memories of my early apple products. But lately they are cheap, featureless for "pro" titles and overly expensive. Engineering standards have dropped to where the logic board in a $1500 ipad pro is now a structural component double-side taped in place. By structural, I mean the logic board itself is used to add rigidity to the weak housing that is essentially a flat cookie sheet tray. The ifixit teardown was disturbing as everything is held together with 3M tape essentially. They were not overly impressed either. Performance and sound is excellent, just not built to last.

@Louis Rossmann I love that you're making these nightly... I look forward to them when I get home in Melbourne, Australia. As of yet I am not working in circuit board repair, but have dabbled in it in the past. You, sir, are restoring my interest/passion for the area - thankyou! I love that you share your humble lessons, being honest with us on stuff like when you got "lazy" removing that chip that was hot without considering what could be causing it, leading to you having to replace 2 chips... or when you ranted about not being a perfectionist on cosmetic things, that when you get all OCD on stuff you just end up making it worse.

Hey, Louis, I have an idea for the video! But first of all, I'd like to thank you for all the effort and passion it takes to make those! I took a leap of faith and started my own repair company, because I've got tired of working for someone else. And your videos took part in my decision making process. Both working for someone and being self-employed I have made some screw-ups, and it made me curious - could you share some of yours? I mean just screw-ups during repair, that resulted in said repair going from "easy" to "whole fucking day to make it right". I thought it may be a fun idea, because on the course of your career you certainly had some adventures of that kind ;) Keep up the good work, you're not only showing stuff - you're entertaining and educating and, the most importantly - inspiring.

Apple will continue to produce shitty products because the AppleCult will always pay money for a product that has the apple logo on it. It's absolutely insane. Well Thomas good point. The dangerous path Apple has taken with their non-phone products is a slippery slope esp. for Apple. They were once known as a very pricey high end boutique computer manufacturer. Along with that price you expected the very best components and engineering, in the past that was true. Apple along with some other tech giants seem far more concerned on the bottom line and appeasing their shareholders. How simple minded that is, the customers generate the income and these current tactics are scaring them away. Apple will continue to own the phone and tablet market. Perhaps the lack of revenue in comparison justifies their treatment of the computer division like a red-headed stepchild. Perhaps they feel they are reaching the point when that division is no longer competitive. Let's see how this whole M1 thing shakes out as Apple tries to return to the complete proprietary system once again. If the A1706 is any representation of Apple's quality commitment I wouldn't want to be one of the early adopters.

Now I'm waiting for a friend to bring round the special screwdriver to have a looksee inside.

Blown tantalum? Too much ripple (current) or perhaps thermal expansion around the part causing a crack. Do Apple put a copper layer below that MLF?

My 450 € toshiba satellite from 2008 is still fine. Just had to get a cable fixed to the screen 6 years ago (screen stayed black). Cost me 40 € for the repair. No issues besides that.

I wonder if this is what Apple actually means when they say 'liquid damage', not what we think we hear (you dunk the macbook into the ocean) but when a component inside effectively melts/liquefies causing 'liquid' damage. If I understood correctly (I do software, not hardware), tantalum capacitors can be finicky, especially old ones, maybe there was a electrostatic shock in the wrong direction?

I have an A1706 and it’s been working perfectly fine for me. It’s 6 years old but I’ve taken phenomenal care of it over this time. However, three days ago I realized that my touchbar wasn’t coming on. Upon checking Activity Monitor and system preferences touchbar & control strip are NOWHERE to be found. The system is acting like it’s not installed. What would be the best corse of action? I have an appointment at GB this weekend just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what you did to resolve it.

Tantalum capacitors are very intolerant to voltage spikes and heat. Even voltage spikes that last just microseconds can insult them enough to self destruct. Unlike other types of capacitors like electrolytic or film which have the ability to "heal" after an insult, tantalum has no such ability, leading to them dying more frequently. They're a big problem on old motherboards which sometimes use hundreds of them as bypass capacitors. Powering up an old 286/386/486 for the first time after 20-30 years often results in at least one of them exploding.

Did a fast wall adapter to the charger or a weak or old disintegrated cap caused by heat do this if so maybe just swap it out with better quality ones or even uses a laptop pad with fans with good air flow to keep the mac cool !!?

Yucky tantalums. They do that. I thought people had gotten away from those and only use ceramics nowadays. My old Diamond Stealth 3D video card in my vintage workstation computer from the late 1990's....almost every tantalum SMD cap has done exactly what you had happen here. They de-solder themselves and drop off the PCB or tombstone. Still works though...

if you haven´t seen it, there is a recent video about the 52V line issue from EEVblog where Dave (an electrical engineer) took a look at possible solutions for this problem. I dont think it´s going to be easy to properly fix that flaw in an existing product. Just don´t get any liquids anywhere near it ever or something :P

Hello together, i have here an A1706 with a "small" liquid damage. Not one indicator is red but i have corrosion on two caps and one chip. The Caps are NE(H) CN7 - so 16V - 33µF - 180mOHm ESR , but i couldnt find one simular with that low ESR in case-B size. The closest i could get was 350mOhm but 10% instead of 20%, would that work? The second Chip is coded with "20P - E8" and has six legs, i couldnt find any further information. Hope somebody can help. Thank you very much.

Is Apple properly derating their Tantalum caps for voltage and temp. Common engineering mistake is to only derate for one and the symptom is a small failure percentage of shorted caps. You should use 2x rated voltage for Tantalum caps to prevent failures from cap defects. What is the supply rail overshoot when powering up? Send me the cap series and I can analyze it.
