This video demonstrates how to seam garter stitch fabric so that the cast on edge, bind off edge, and main body of the fabric maintain stitch pattern continuity. The seam is flat, and reversible.

I do almost anything not to seam a knitted item, but for my new grandchild, I bit the bullet and made something that had to be seamed. I used your technique and OMG, it looks beautiful. I want to cry. You are brilliant Roxanne. I love you videos and am a devoted follower.

This is what I was doing, except that I didn't know the pieces needed to be on the same side! *facepalm* I faced the ends together. I always come to your videos for instruction when I am stuck and I'm never disappointed. Thank you! I recommend that everyone studies how to create duplicate stitch with a needle. I use it as embroidery over my knitting, fix mistakes, and even sewn in my ends. It took my knitting to a whole new level and I see that it's exactly what you're doing here too.

I'm planning out and drafting a mobius cowl, and working it in the round wouldn't have given me the right number of twists. I was really hoping that someone out there knew how to join garter stitch in a way that would be reversible, not very visible from either side. I tested it and it turned out amazing. Thank you for the incredibly clear description and for all the little details you pointed out to make sure it goes smoothly.

Great video, thank you. I’m making a blanket from squares (first big project) but don’t have very long tails from cast on or bind off. Can this still work with a separate length of wool? Would I need to somehow loop it into the corner where the tail would have been first? (Sorry, I’m not down with the lingo)

Thank you so much for your excellent how to videos. But as usual Mine has to be different so I am again lost. The garment I have to finish up has all three of the different textures, the plain stockinette, reverse stockinette and garter. There is a cable yoke piece, then you pick up stitches along the long side of that cable yoke piece and there is the reverse stockinette, then you pick up stitches again off the long the edge of the yoke and you do garter stitch till you reach the neck and you bind off. So nothing you are are doing matches mine. There is no cast on row, just picked up stitches, and where you start is my bind off. I hope you can help me because I am ready to through it away and it is a shame to do that with just the joining is all that's left. I am thanking you in advance for helping me.

I do have a blanket to sew together, but first, have to rip out the blanket stitch I started with. I lost the pattern but it needs an edge to this blanket and I am wondering how to make the corners look good, This is thick yarn and I will have probably 5 rows of garter edge around it. Do you have any suggestions for the edge corners? This is thick chunky yarn. Thank you!

Thank you for your great work - so appreciated as an intermediate- beginner! Ive knitted a toddlers sideways Shepherds cardi in stocking stitch with garter ridges and I need to lengthen the base as he has grown since I started it (as I jumped to another project). I need to knit a new piece and graft it, or seam it, on or Join As I Go with a set of live stitches (do you have a video for JAYG as I cant see one) . Which would be the best strategy in terms of durablity? Hes going to be pullling it on and off with vigour :( I want a good looking connection with no high ridges in the join. I note you said this garter version is a Mattress Stitch - do you have suggestions or a video for working stitches of pearl and plain. I'd appreciate your advice very much . Thank you.

Hi Roxanne hope all's well with you. I am ready to sew the shoulder step seams in my garter stich cardigan and I was wondering if you have a video for this. I have looked but can only find the stocking stitch one. I'm guessing it will be the same process but would be keen to see it done by you if this is at all possible. Regards Katy
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 жыл бұрын
It's the same process. Rather than the stair step edges, though, I would probably do the shoulder shaping using short rows, so that all sts remain live, and then use a three-needle BO to join the two edges.

Hello great video! Beginner here, would this stitch be strong enough for a garter stitch jumper seams? Or would mattress stitch be better?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 5 жыл бұрын
This technique is essentially mattress stitch done using a 1/2 st from each side. The alternative would be to work the left edge as shown, and to capture the first non-edge lower bump on the right. I would suggest knitting a couple of narrow garter stitch swatches and trying each method in order to decide which you prefer.

Hi Roxanne, this looks so easy when the two pieces being joined are nice and flat! I want to use this method to seam a sweater sleeve. My edges are curled and the edges are not pretty! 😢. Also, this project was purled on the right side and knitted on the wrong side, so maybe this isn’t a true garter stitch, but the right side looks like the garter stitch. Can you tell I’m a novice knitter! 😉 Any advice would be most helpful. Thank you. Debbie
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
What you have is called reverse stockinette stitch. When you alternate between knitting a row and purling a row, it's called stockinette when the knit side is on the public side (RS) and it's called reverse stockinette when the knit side is on the private side (WS). You need a method of seaming reverse stockinette. Here's one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNN6dsablbq-XXU.html

@@RoxanneRichardson thanks so much Roxanne! That is pretty much how I seamed the first sleeve but was picking up stitches further from the edge. I like the idea of blocking first but this is a Ragland sleeve cardigan and at the under arm level the sleeves were knitted into and finished with the body. So I don’t have sections to block. The whole cardigan was completed at the same time except for seaming the collar to the back and seaming the sleeves.

When I'm knitting my garter stitch item, do I knit regular edge , i.e. knit 1st stitch ? I don't work an alternative selvedge edge, correct ?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 2 жыл бұрын
Slipping the first stitch is typically for aesthetic reasons, when the edge will remain exposed. If you're planning on seaming, you'll just keep the selvedge in pattern (knit it the same as the rest of the row).

What if you have flat piece with CO edge at bottom and BO at top, and you fold over sides to join- are those two edges in position like you say about at start of video? I can’t picture it to know if edges for seaming will look the same or not?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
I would probably rotate the pieces on the table so that the piece with BO edge is on the bottom and CO on the top, so that the sts are oriented on both sides of the seam in the direction they were knitted.
@jq7136
@jq7136 Жыл бұрын
@@RoxanneRichardson Tks Roxanne for reply, but I’m folding flat piece into a tube and seaming for a hat, so it’s length and width is made so have to join BO & CO so wondered how to seam that flat, as when tried in the past ended up with a ridge.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
@@jq7136 You'd need to start with a provisional CO and end with live sts, and then do a graft or a three needle BO. Depending on your stitch pattern, there are different ways to do a 3NBO that will give a fairly flat result. If you seam a CO edge and BO edge, you're going to have a ridge on the inside
