MAZDA MX-5 Rocker Cover Restoration ( Miata , Eunos )

For this restoration video ive decided its about time to start refreshing the engine bay on my 1992 MAZDA MX-5 EUNOS ROADSTER ( MIATA) and where better to start than the rocker cover.
As you can probably tell the car has been sitting for a loooong time and everything is going rusty and crusty. so first thing is first i whipped the strut brace off to give clearance for the rocker cover to come out. once the plug leads, coil packs and oil breathers are disconnected its time to undo the cover bolts and remove the rocker cover.
Once off i could see the engine has been fairly well cared for judging from the condition of the valve train and lack of baked on oily gunk on the inside of the rocker cover.
The next job was the remove the oil vapour plates to allow access to give the cover a thorough degreasing. The inside was covered with gunk and allowed to soak for a while before scrubbing with a wire brush and scotchbrite for the hard to reach areas and it came up very well indeed with only minimal oil staining but im not to worried about that as its going back on the engine and not being a show piece.
When the underside was completely clean i moved on the topside, it was heavily corroded with lots of pitting and high spots. I used my draper multi tool with wire brush attachments to get into all the tight spots where lots of corrosion was lurking then i moved onto an aggressive sanding of the flat areas with some 80 grit sanding pads which cleaned up and flattened out the surface nicely.
Then it was a case of masking up and starting the priming process. The first layer is always etch primer as normal primers lack the acid content to etch into the metal and get an effective grip on the surface. After the etch i came back with 3 layers of high solid high build primer to give me enough material thickness to work with to flatten back to get a smooth surface. After the primer had cured it was all wet flatted back with several grades of wet and dry and finely finished with some grey scotch brite to even out the surface to allow the metallic to lay down evenly.
Back into the booth for the first of several layers of colour, the colour i chose for this project was BMW VERMILLION red as its a very deep and rich colour with a very high but very fine metallic gold content which makes the colour pop in bright light. After the base coat and adequate curing time i sanded back the lettering with several grades of sand paper and a mirka flat block until i got the desired brushed effect on the lettering, you need to have a very steady hand and a bit of courage for this step (yes i could have masked up the surrounding area to protect the paint but wheres the fun in that ;))
After lacquering and curing all that was left was to rtv silicone and stud lock the vapour plates back on and rebuild the top side.
Very satisfying restoration.
If you would like to see more of the engine bay restored please leave a comment and let me know what you think, all ideas and advice on how to grow the channel are welcomed.

I really like what you've done. I don't think I have the knowledge you do. My engine is in pieces at a shop and I would like to do it while it's out. Would a body shop understand the process? Perhaps I can get them to wait while I get the cover and do it myself. That's really a difference-maker when you eyeball it.

I did an almost identical job to a spare cam cover for my 1.8 Mk1 (Same as this one I believe). Only difference is that I went a bit crazy with the cleaning. I ended up cleaning it, Then cooking it in the oven for a couple of hours to bring as much as possible of the remaining oil to the surface, Then used an old steam wallpaper stripper to get it really oil free before sanding and spraying gloss black, Sanding back the lettering with 80 grit for a heavy brushed look, Then several coats of lacquer. I finished it off with a machined alloy oil filler cap. It looked stunning, So I put it safely away in a box in readiness for the next cambelt change........ But before that came around I knackered my back and needed to sell my precious MX5 to get something more spine cossetingly sensible. :( I kept the collection of upgrades I hadn't got around to fitting for over a year before I realised that my back was never going to be good enough for me to get another MX5, So I sold everything off (That cam cover, A couple of service kits, A reconditioned Torsen type 2 dif, A full set of second hand wishbones that I'd had chemically stripped and powder coated, New chassis braces, + lots of other stuff). I'd been carefully collecting cool bit's to go on that car for over 2 years, Finally selling them all off broke my bloody heart. It felt like a book just finishing mid sentence without actually ending the story. :( .............. God, I miss my old MX5. :(

Degreaser and a half an hour in a dishwasher gets rocker covers (and other car/bike parts) 100% clean and shiny without all the elbow grease, not as satisfying as doing it by hand but a lot quicker if you are short on time for the same result. Also if you put a limescale descaler tablet in with it, it can sometimes remove the build up of grime/limescale reducing the need for as much sanding afterwards. Amazing job by the way! So satisfying seeing the end result after all that hard work.

Awesome job! Would've like to seen you reinstall it back on UNLESS you are redoing other items in the engine bay and needed to wait.

Very enjoyable! My hope is that you're doing a full engine bay restoration in the usual style, because that would be incredibly satisfying to watch. Looked great at the end!

Very satisfying to watch. Fast forwarding, no excessive talking or noise, clear steady video, great results. Couple of questions. Was it necessary to rtv the plates back in because I didn't see any old rtv when you took them off? Will the clear coat hold up against engine temperatures? I'll echo someone elses comment below. The only thing hold this back from being perfect was no mention of brand of materials used or measurements. Those details could be added after the fact in the video description. Great job.

Hey, Thanks for your comment and suggestions. Im glad you enjoyed the video :). The plates were put back in with RTV as there was a layer on there from the factory, its quite difficult to see on the video. The lacquer will easily stand up to the temps as the bodywork of a black car standing in the summer sun all day gets waaay hotter then a rocker cover and the lacquer holds up just fine in that situation year after year ;)

I'm planning on doing this with my BMW E36 next week on my holidays. It's not nearly as nice looking cover as this one, and 98% of it will be covered up by the engine cover but it's something I've been looking forward to a lot ever since I got it running a month or so ago (motor swap). Did anyone else find this strangely satisfying to listen to? or am I the only weird one?

Very nice, even clear coated with hardener it looks like, a step i see a lot of people miss out. I Think they think, oh it looks finished but don't realise how much easier it is to chip paint without it.

Amazing job looks like something I might want to try on my cars.. Would like to see maybe a paint job with spray cans or something that some of us can use at home that don't have access to the paint shop or on a budget
