Nice job, Caleb. Enjoyed this well edited review on the M77. Love my stainless Hawkeye in 300 RCM w/sights. New England Custom Guns (NECG) makes a well designed, compact yet rugged, fully adjustable aperture/peep sight for these Rugers that easily attaches/detaches/reattaches with good return to zero, on the rear integral receiver mount. Makes a great back up sight option, or even a fine primary rear sight alternative to those factory rear ramps, for those who simply prefer peeps on their rigs (also considerably lengthens the sight radius, enhancing accuracy a bit). Used mine on several 'bou in northern Canada with favorable results, even at longer distances. It may be something you might find useful to help shave some scope weight and bulk off your rig while also having the added benefit of providing quick target aquisition on close-up dangerous game you may have to deal with as an Alaskan Bear guide. Makes your rifle a real joy to carry too. I believe Brownell's still sells them. ATB

The M77 is THE BEST guide gun around! Mine has a 3# trigger job done to it and I recommend a quick detach scope mount setup on the rifle so you can change out the scope for your iron sights in seconds without screwing up your scopes zero when putting it back on.

I don't know man it's got some very stiff competition. Winchester's Model 70 Alaskan, and their Model 70 Safari... and then Savages 110 Brush Hunter, for HALF THE PRICE of the Ruger... the M77 definitely isn't the only big kid on the block
@johnappleseed9290

The Model 70 Safari and Alaskan are solid, however the construction on the M77 Ruger feels more robust. Also both have Mauser type action so they’re pretty much a tie imo.

I think most guys consider the "M77" the old model with the tang safety. I think a lot of guys would call guns with those actions the Hawkeye, with the wing safety. The standard one with the Hogue stock I would call the Ruger Guide Gun. I've got my eye on the first one you showed, in the same caliber. I'm looking forward to see what you're developing, thanks.

You mentioned the stock is very gripable and you are less likely to drop the rifle and break the scope because the hunt would be over. You are right about the grip on the stock but the M77 hawkeye does have open sights so the hunt would not be over. Actually the first thing I notice about the M77 is the banded front sight.

Is that why you put tape over your one clients barrel to keep out debris . I had a judge friend who had a gun with a clip like that his complaint it would open & drop the bullets to the floor of his deer stand , does it stay closed fairly well & have you had any problems afield having that clip get bumped open in the brush . I can't wait for your gun to come out , priced right I'll put my Burris eliminator scope on it . Probably will be a waiting line a mile long for your new gun .

I appreciate your candid review. We need more of these. Thanks for your work on this. You are lost/off base on detachable magazines. By your logic, the M16/M4 should not have them as Soldiers sometimes move through swamps, jungles, nasty woods and a stick could hit the mag release and cause the mag to fall out. Or, it could rub against their webgear and drop the mag. This is possible, but after 21 years as a Cavalryman, I find this to be a red herring argument/not likely. All military and LEO entities have moved to box magazines. Hunting humans is at least as dangerous as hunting bears. Stick the mag release where it won't be inadvertently triggered. Carry a spare magazine(s) like Soldiers do, as Murphy is always along for the ride. A HUNTER should not need to shoot 25 times to drop his targeted animal, so the magazine is not about volume of fire. Unloading the weapon is a bit faster/easier/safer when you drop the mag, and eject the round in the chamber vs. cycling the bolt 3-5 times. This is picking nits. If you like internal magazines - awesome. If you want a detachable mag (Savage 110 Tactical), awesome. This is why we used to be a free nation - we could do as we chose. BTW - I have the same rifle, but without the idiotic brake (2007? production date. I will not train anyone on my ranges with a muzzle brake. I have lost enough of my hearing already, and no one on the range likes getting beat up with the blast taking out their eyesight, or eardrums.). It is a superb rifle to CARRY and USE hunting. It is beautiful in terms of form follows function. Also have the identical rifle in .416 Ruger and have seriously pondered finding a second .375 Ruger Alaskan because two is one, and one is none. That is how pleased I am with the synergy of the design.
