Greetings Tipper! We’ve been doing much the same in our garden. I’m feeling much better & it’s November 6th. This week & last week in Middle TN has reached 70F. I’ve planted violas (Johnny Jump Up’s) in my old concrete planters that were my Ma’s. Johnny Jump Up’s bloom all winter & into Spring while the pansies Peter out. I’m late planting garlic due to my knee replacements. I’m also planting Fall bulbs to bloom in Spring. Over 30 years living here I’ve planted over 100 bulbs per year, plus those in the woods coming up from time long gone on a homestead that was here. I love naturalizing all kinds of bulbs so Spring will come extra early with 1st blooms (snowdrops &crocus) in January & February. Still praying for Granny. Blessings, Allison 🍁

Such a peaceful back drop behind you two. Tomato sandwich is my favorite! I planted two plants in containers on my back deck and got less than 20 tomatoes-same with my neighbors. 2023 was a “skinny” tomato year. God bless Paul for his efforts in securing the education of the next generation in Appalachia!

I’m a new gardener so I’m watching various gardening stuff on KZfaq. I’m not sure which one I heard this on but I did hear this. Don’t pull your plants completely out at the end of the season. Cut them off at the ground and leave the roots in the soil. It helps improve the soil over the winter. So I’m trying that.

Come on, Matt. Get with the program and join the Tipper Skipper. If you don't bust a gut, you'll be better off for it! Seriously, I really enjoy your segments in the mountain garden. I'm sure it's a real challenge to grow things with all the rocks and hills around. And there's simply no better 'mater" than a small, sweet tommytoe. And don't fret too much about the last of the nasturtiums. They'll be back next year and even prettier than ever.

Gotta say, I would love to know what went through Matt's mind when you said you had bugs, because he sure had to work at not laughing :) He is getting so good at those steps up the hill, you ought to run your beans in rows behind the new raised beds. Squash bug "eggs" don't overwinter, the adult squash bugs do. Try laying scraps of 2x4 or 2x6 lumber here and there on the ground in your cucumber bed over winter. Check it every now and then, you may find squash bugs. With all the woods you have around, I imagine it would be hard to eliminate leaf litter for them to hide under, but the board "traps" might be a start.

I like those coconut popsicles. They’re almost like real dessert. I didn’t care for school much either. Our potato crop was poor this year. Watching you clean out the garden surely makes me glad my garden is cleaned out! We struggle growing corn with our short growing season. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I finally opened a jar of your pickle recipe and they are crisp and tasty. When Matt oversees the tomato planting you could get him a T-shirt that says 🍅”MATER MAN.”🍅. 😂. Hello from the Foothills of SC😊 We’re also at the end of our growing season except for our beautiful collards! They’ve had 2 frosts so I’m ready to have some cooked with a little pork ribs cooked in them., cornbread and soup beans with chow chow. I put our last bell peppers in the freezer Tuesday. I pulled my annuals out Monday because it hurts to see them frozen. Our gardens are taking their long winters nap, and I hope we have less bug pressure next season and a little more rain. Prayers for those in the areas with wildfires. The poor apple growers in Hendersonville are praying watching and waiting. It’s really hard to watch unfolding🙏

Tipper and Matt. I second what Daphne Roberts said before my message. Watching the two of you joking around and laughing together does my heart good. It makes me smile and it just plain feels nice. I also laughed out loud (literally) so much Tipper, while watching you test Matt, Katie and Corietgrffffffffffffffm (had to leave your name in here like this Corie. It was compliments of Luna Soleil) about Appalachian words and their meanings. My cat Luna Soleil gets jealous when I'm on my lap top so she nonchalantly walks across my keyboard while looking at me as if to say "What"? Tipper, as you were describing what was left in the garden, you pointed out some of the unexpected pleasures, like the humongous nasturtiums, things that came up where you didn't plant them, or the beans that are so prolific and are now your and Matt's favorite. It occurred to me that in a year of emotional upheaval and time constraints, perhaps this was God's way of giving you unexpected "beauty for ashes." May He continue to bless you two. Praying for Paul as he moves into a new season of life, Granny, and the rest of the family.

Tipper, I love watching you and Matt in the garden and hanging out after putting in the work! I did the same thing last week. I picked all my peppers and brought inside to go to the Freezer. It was sad to see the blossoms that didn’t get to make little peppers! I missed gardening this summer. I planted the summer vegetables the end of April and it came up beautifully. We didn’t know Mama was going to get sick in early May. I tried to keep up with all the weeds & grass but they won. Once it got so bad, I told Larry to till it all under. But I found 2 beautiful pepper plants amongst all that grass. I lifted them & planted in grow bags and they did so good! Other than the early season broccoli & cabbage ( the ones I carried you when I met you in Sylva) that is the extent of my 2023 garden. We lost mama right after Labor Day & I miss her but I am looking forward to next springs garden! I am sending love and prayers to Granny. I hope she is tolerating her treatments well as possible. Give her a big hug from me! And I am so excited for you and your family welcoming that precious little grandson. You will be “ plum foolish“ over him. I am keeping our 7th month old little fellow today! He’s our 10th grandchild & we THINK he will probably be the last. They are just precious. Take care and keep the videos coming because we love you and you’re family!

That the ground cherry that you wiped off with your shirt is 💯 percent cleaner than anything you get in the grocery store.

Thanks so much for this❤️ Yesterday was a hard day.... To sit down and watch you harvest... The peace.. The beauty of life... Does me good😊 I still have lettuce... And a few tomatoes that I covered and saved through our freeze last week... I pulled my aloe plants up to the house cause the house is warm and it radiates and I also covered them up.... But... Even though we warmed back up this week... Its just a matter of time... I know... Till ours is gonna be gone too.

@@CelebratingAppalachia Thank you Tipper. It is hard to create a new normal. First step... Is accepting that life has changed. I've struggled these past 2 months to do this. I think truly I have been in shock. I know y'all understand. Are y'all doing okay? You? The girls? Matt? Knowing they are with Father is a wondrous and glorious realization... But the loss is there. If you haveany advice... I truly am all ears. I know you were very close to your daddy too. In my family... Everybody counts on me to be the strong one.... So I hold it in until I'm alone..... That's when I miss Mama the most. The sharing of our day... The joys.. The trials...

@@user-ef2se7hs2b I remember feeling just like that and I'm sorry you're going through it now!! I found the 2 things that helped me most was the passing of time and focusing on all the good times I had with Pap and how blessed our family was to have his influence and guidance, but grieving is a process you have to go through at your own pace. I remember the hospice chaplain saying the price of great love is great grief. I know you have that great love for your sweet mama like we have for Pap. Praying for peace and comfort for you today!!

I'm so grateful for your you tube channel. When life gets hectic & full of chaos I love to come here & watch a few videos from the past. It takes my mind off things & allows me to dream of life in the Appalachian mountains. I'm so glad that Matt was able to retire this year & that Paul's time is coming after the Christmas holidays. I can't wait for Katie's little baby next year. I never had any grand babies but that was a lifelong dream of mine. Y'all are going to love having him around. Hugs!

This is the most I’ve ever seen Tipper upbeat over gardening. Next year will be better I know. I been thinking about a name suggest for y’all’s grandson that would go with Elik and I came up with the name Elias Dean. #hope_for_cancer #team_granny #this_is_the_day_that_the_lord_has_made

I never had a big love of school either, but I recognized I needed an education to acquire the profession I desired. 😊 Sometimes I thought I was in a time warp and the final semester of college would never come. 🤣 I have been fortunate to experience many wonderful opportunities in my life….a rewarding job, a nice home to live in, traveled to various areas of the world. However, the joy I experience when I visit the mountains of North Carolina is something I will always treasure. You and your family are blessed. Don’t ever doubt that. Thank you for your wonderful KZfaq channel.

Last week, in s.e. Wisconsin we had to rush to get in all the green lush veggies before our hard frost came too. I collected 225 grape tomatoes and made salsa with them--4 quarts came out of that! Now we're back into the high 40's and 50's. It's just not fair to rob the garden for a few days of frost.
