Ryzen 9 5900X and Wraith Prism, is this a combo that can work? In this video we take a look at cooling the Ryzen 9 5900X 12 Core Zen 3 processors with AMD’s wraith prism stock cooler. The 5000 series never shipped with a stock cooler in the box(5600X is the exception) whereas previous gen ryzen parts like the 3900X or 3700X got the wraith prism. It’s a fairly decent stock cooler but AMD recommends you buy an aftermarket cooler to get the most out of the CPU. We compare the wraith prism against a high-end aftermarket CPU cooler the corsair H115i PRO XT 280mm AIO.

So it seems AMD should have included a Wraith Prism with the 5900X because, as you've just demonstrated, it is completely adequate for cooling it.

To be fair, this thing gets LOUD. As Steve at HWUB demonstrated part of the problem is acoustics, and considering how many enthusiasts have probably legit clinically diagnosed autism, I can see how some people may not want to tolerate a jet engine in their room, particularly because some people have soundbars and huge speaker/woofer systems set up, and/or are streaming and recording themselves which you're not going to do with that thing running full blast. Also because it'll run hot af while you're doing that. Of course "undervolting is the new OCing" so the meme goes on Ryzen, so...

I like these practical/real-world scenario type of videos. Basically what I got out of this video is that the Wraith Prism does work but if you have the money to spend on a CPU fan it seems worth it over a free Wraith Prism. No knock on the Prism - probably great for a let's say 5600x but not for 5900x, I'm guessing.

Thanks for the useful info. Can't help thinking that comparing a (admittedly) high end stock cooler to a liquid cooling solution's not that fair, but the figures are still useful. I'd have liked to see how the Wraith compared to the Noctua as this might have been a bit of a fairer comparison and we can more clearly see the difference that after-market delivers, but your insights and info is still useful.

Good video. There isn't a big performance difference between the Prism and the AIO as evidenced by the 100mhz difference in average frequencies under load. I'd love to see another test with the 5950x and a Noctua air cooler vs the Prism.

You should've noted the frequency during the synthetic load. With the Wraith Prism, and at 86 degrees, the CPU was certainly walking back the core frequency to keep the temperature from going higher.

Thanks. We're swapping out a R5 3900X for R9 5950X. This is for a professional recording studio main control-room authoring audio for music and film in both stereo and Dolby Atmos in Nuendo12. This PC needs to run a bunch of software simultaneously continually for as long as 10hrs straight and is generally never turned off. We have the AMD Wraith cooler that came with the 3900X and forgot to buy a cooler at the time of purchase and I was debating whether it would really matter and clearly it does, considering this is only a 12-Core in this test

>but why would anyone do a thing like that I'll answer this question by saying as a Wraith Prism owner, I am loathe to give up the thing based just on its looks. That is why. This is the real reason why any of us are so hard assed about not giving up our Wraith Prisms no matter what and why videos like these exist. It's a noisy little thing ramped up, but which is outclassed by my remorselessly aggressive GPU fan curve anyway, so clearly I don't care about that, and which I leave on some kind of "undervolt" on Ryzen Master anyway (that idk how much my x570 is outweighing that but considering I get 50s C on my 3700x 1.875v/4.325ghz suspect the undervolt is working as intended). It's not just about us being cheap, I mean hell if we're considering getting a 5900x or 5950x it's clearly not just being done to save a few quid which brings it near entirely to the real reason which is this is by far one of the nicest looking coolers out there and actually somehow manages to cool well enough that at least in theory you should be able to get a 5900x to run under it. It's been a real pain in my ass just trying to find anything at all which either fits my build or looks at least slightly good enough compared to losing this thing, which if you're into anything beyond silent black metal bricks is not easy. I think the Coolermaster MasterAir similar looking to their Wraith Ripper on sTR4 is the closest I can even do on air and that thing's f'ing $100+ for an air tower, with everything else being AIOs that I don't want to leave my PC running overnight with those things installed and which don't look good enough to me without costing multi-hundreds of dollars like all the LCD screen 360mm ones like the new MSI and Asus ones or the z73 Kraken. That's the level of good looks which I think this thing has, and a lot of that's got to do with the multiple layers of controllable LEDs system which produces this ghostly hologram like effect with the blades while the logo is lit up another color and another internal ring of LEDs circling around the fans in two cycling colors. You'd just have to see it to get it. Go look up some videos showing the different controllable settings on producing the hologram effect and realize none of them capture how nice it looks IRL. So basically, all that is what I'd have to be sacrificing just in order to get a $300 AIO that might spring a leak and is almost guaranteed to eventually die in a few years, that I can't leave my PC on, and the only reason I want the LCD screens is uploading my own gifs to match different themes. Anything less than that is probably going to look worse.

A couple of years ago, for poops and giggles, I affixed my Prism to my 3950X. It maxed out at around 88C while running Folding @ Home for 24 hours, which I've found to be much more stressful than most stress tests short of something like rendering benchmarks, which I don't have. IIRC, most averages ran around 80C. Yes, it's a little hot vs an AIO or a Noctua, but it still runs it well within specs.

@@DannyzReviews , 5600x with prism is more than enough for cpu to run at max frequency... Its not worth to invest more money on cooling as you're mainly gaming on 5600x and that doesn't stretch it to much... I have 5600x and prism and it doesn't go above 60 while gaming. For 5900x I would go with better cooler as noone getting that cpu uses it only for gaming, if he's smart 😉
@pandemicneetbux2110
@pandemicneetbux2110 2 жыл бұрын
@@DannyzReviews Eh I dunno maybe. 5600x is a 65w unit which is the same as my chiplet design 3700x and which I've only really seen hit 60s during boosting behaviour on PBO unless I did something wrong (I stopped trusting PBO and the boosting entirely and ended up just downvolting everything because I realized I was getting even higher framerates by just disabling all that in Ryzen Master and setting a lower vcore. Ryzen Master is underappreciated really. Feels easier than screwing around with BIOS) So his 6 core I can't imagine needing it that much for autoOC more than my 3700x does unless he lost silicon lottery badly. Wraith Prism does a marvelous job at keeping shit cool and I run 4.2ghz in older or 4.325ghz in newer/more demanding gaming and pretty much stay in the low to mid 50s C. He'd have to really overvolt the bejeesus out of it to silicon degrade levels imo to ever require anything better than a Wraith Prism. I'm honestly confused which is speaks to what better, cooler master's design on this thing that looks like it shouldn't do much, or AMD's incredible efficiency.

Hey, I just found your channel doing a research for CPU coolers. A nice video indeed. I have a question, would a cooler like cooler master ma410m be suffice for the 5900x CPU? I already have the cooler, using it with R5 3600 and thinking about upgrading to the 5900x. Would a cooler upgrade be necessary? Just gonna run the CPU at stock settings of course. Mostly gaming on the system, occasionally streaming and heaviest workload is possibly handbrake or premiere. By the way, what kind of ambient temperatures were you running the test in? Sorry if you already mentioned it in the video, I might have missed it. Thank you very much.

Single fan AIOs are useless, and 240mm rads are ungainly looking and often don't do a lot better than air cooling but with worse reliability and for more money. But I really can't fathom why anybody would be doing watercooling on a 65w chip anyway. This cooler came with 65w chips so there's no reason it wouldn't. The main question here is with the 105w tdp chips like 5800x, 5900x, now 5800X3D, and 5950x which I've never seen anyone do yet (probably because getting a 5950x for the extra cores but not dealing with the heat is dumb since it's a workstation CPU)

my ryzen 9 3900x came with the wraith prism cooler as standard. the 3900XT doesnt come with a cooler as that recommends liquid cooling. but i found the wraith prism actualy cooled better than liquid coolers. with mine using the wraith prism temps under stress tests were about 50c with the H100I liquid cooler it was 60c. but it also depends on the MB. with the asrock phantom 4 x570 temps were hiting 95c on everything in the rig including the MB no matter what cooler i tried. with the Asus prime B350 plus and the MSI x570 gaming edge temps were only getting to 50C and 60C with the 3900XT. about 5c to 10c hotter using the corsair H100i elite capelix cooler. But again it depends on where u fit the radiator. fitted to the top of the case temps r lower than if u fit it at the bottom or front. thats cause air bubbles in the system rise to the highest point and if thats the Pump on the CPU u will get air bubbles instead of water so it doesnt cool as well.

I had to rma the 1st 5900x cause it would crash a lot. My second one runs hot compared to the 1st one. I have the same cooler and under load I am around 75c-80c and idle is 30-40.

5600x runs cool. Input the stock cooler on my 5800x. It still boosted to 4.6 fine.

I dont think a person who will use this cooler will pair it with that high end motherboard. I think u should use a mid range x570 like asus tuf gaming.

Can't leave out noise levels when discussing coolers. A ton of channels, if not most, make that mistake. The computer is not going to fry. But sitting next to a wind turbine will annoy the average autistic sperg.
