We spend time exploring Shimoda, it's the only bit of tourism we could do this season because of coronavirus. Shimoda was also our last port in Japan. We left on June 9th and arrived in Victoria on July 28th. In all, we spent 50 days on the water (experiencing July 1st twice!).
This was a very difficult trip, but we also saw some amazing things, lots of birds, lots of whales and dolphins.
As I've mentioned in the video, we kept a detailed logbook of happenings on the trip. If you want to know more about the trip, read the book: hundredrabbits.itch.io/busy-d...

I first found this channel at about 4am, and stayed up watching it all until the sunrise. The sleep deprivation combined with the music and the scenes of the ocean created a feeling I have never experienced again. It left me with the most intense feeling of wanderlust I've ever had! I didn't realize before that this sort of adventure was still possible in our modern world. I return every once in a while. Thank you for making this video series.

@HundredRabbits

Haha, we did complain a whole lot. I distinctly remember writing in our log that if the boat's batteries could be charged by our whining then we'd be set. I'm sure you could take it, making the decision to go is the hardest, cause you know it's gonna suck. But in this case, it was our only path home. Also, once you're out there you've got no choice but to keep going, there's no alternative (a trap of our own making). Even if we were miserable we sucked it up, sulked for a while, then a dolphin would come and suddenly a shit day ended up being the BEST day ever. It was the most wonderful and scariest thing we've ever done.

I'm glad you arrived.51 days!!! No stops? Super cool. What would you change to the yamaha? Add a heater of sorts?
@HundredRabbits
@HundredRabbits 3 жыл бұрын
No stops. We were dead set on doing the Lin and Larry Pardey route. We wanted the experience. We have a heater, but didn't have the parts to service it in Japan, so we did without it. Anyway, it's a real battery-guzzler that thing, plus we weren't carrying an infinity of diesel. What would we change? We're happy with the boat on the whole, but not having the main sheet traveler right behind the companionway door would be nice. Maybe we'd add winches to the mast. And in a perfect, perfect world where big projects were easy and fun, there would be better floor access in the cabin, so many parts are molded and reaching underneath is impossible.

Oh yes. To sad your trip was not to okinawa,i done the Aleutian run twice was too nearly knocked down in midle of the night like a bulldozer raming the starboard side scaring the S,,,oh of me as i was single handed and down below, than on a running set up wind strong wind hudge slopes to sail down long long long swell,,,, yeah great fun first but scary tiresome ,previous passage was 2 years ago from chichi(started okinawa)to Port Angeles stay low on latitude all the way till passed the date line warm weather light winds very litle fog,,,and no humidity, at least u made it ,and a friend of mine run into whales crash at night south of the Aleutian lucky he had a aloy yacht but over 30.000$ repair needed after wards.so Aleutian is ok that course if u intend to visit them.

My fasted passage Tokyo to Port Angeles 6 years ago on a 65ft steel hull ,with free standing carbon rig,27 days ..... shes over 40 ton ,but my goodness what a boat,,,,great sailing even the owner cannot believe i made it that fast,,, but again not the Aleutian course. But i must say i used to take the strong winds starting in tokyo with a typhon. Coming up that gave me over 33 knts start winds ( shes 40 ton 65 ft ) people say in tokyo i am crazy ,i say why would u say that , am a true sailor those winds coming are favorable to the passages give me a push of one third of my passage that be big seas .i can handle it nothing scary at all.that was my most enjoyable passage ,with so lilte to do with that free standing rig that has a rotating mast too...

Our documentation has moved into text rather than video(online on a wiki), we update it almost everyday at: 100r.co I know it's different, but it's less bandwidth-intensive for us, we can rly go in-depth on topics that matter to us, and it doesn't lock the content to KZfaq. Congratulations on a job well done! I’ve been following you since the beginning, and admire your mettle. Now that it’s all behind you, are you satisfied with the decision you made, and would you recommend the offshore lifestyle to others? @HundredRabbits
@HundredRabbits 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yea, I would recommend it, long passages give you time to think, to read, to plan projects... like if you're writing a book or something, this kind of trip is ideal. There are few distractions. It's good for the mind, generally, although this last passage was 30 days too long. We knew it would be long, but we wanted to have the experience, to know what it was like. I'm glad we did it, even if some parts were scary/horrible.

@HundredRabbits

I've read about them online, they always travel in big numbers like this, and stay offshore for months. China has the largest DWF (distant water fishing) fleet in the world. Most Chinese ships are so large that they scoop up as many fish in a week as a local boat might catch in a year (although what we saw were squid-fishing boats, i think). It's insane. The worse is that many are 'invisible', like they turn off their transponders so as to not be tracked. There are problems now near the Galapagos with these fleets.

Get an eberspatcher heater I have one and they are amazing, drying out the boat and keeping damp and cold at bay . At sea run it two days on , three days off. Boats must be kept warm and dry to be healthy A damp and cold small boat can wreck health Thats been a big lesson for me Fairwinds

It's funny you say that, because our boat has an Eberspächer heater. While in Japan, we realized some parts needed replacing, but we couldn't get them because of delivery issues due to covid. So, we decided to do without it.
