Jamie takes us on a tour of design features of Jupiter² both inside and out. Design is a Cyber 48 (Mumby 48) performance cruising catamaran and is constructed in Aluminum.
This is our first ever attempt at a video.... people say the music is annoying!
I think we got better at it, since then!
Find out about Jupiter², the design and why Jamie loves his boat.
And this great design can be picked up second hand UNDER $500kUSD.
Don’t miss the bloopers at the end.🤣

ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. But his life dream is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China, where they were both working. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie loved about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
When locked down in Cape Town South Africa we had the spare time to start putting together some videos that we wanted to share with our family and friends.
Cruising the world and life onboard, is pretty difficult to describe to people verbally. Making videos about this lifestyle help them understand why we love it. This was the beginning of our sailing channel. The early footage was never intended to entertain, or enlighten, so the early vids are a bit of a patchwork. From South Africa onwards, we actually started filming with intent. Although with only the bare equipment, namely an iPhone and a go pro. We would love to get some better gear to improve our production quality, but due to planet Earth still being in lockdown and our cruising in remote locations, we’ve been unable to even buy a tripod! Soon, we hope.
Jamie has spent decades working towards this dream of cruising around the world on a sailboat. However, it was not his only dream. Whilst being raised by a single mum on a single parents pension he would dream of becoming an astronaut! After finishing high school, and realising there is very limited opportunities for space travel growing up in country Australia (whom have no space program!), he got his first job in a factory, and focused his energy on the next best thing….. Flying.
After a chance joy flight with a friend, Jamie found a new passion and with his factory job, managed to pay for one flying lesson per week. After 6 years he had all the qualifications to fly professionally.
However, finding that first job is the real challenge.
That came in the outback Australian township of Mt Isa, starting out on a four seater, Cessna 172 flying teachers, doctors, politicians and local aboriginals to wherever they needed to go.
His career now spans nearly 30 years and having flown and commanded both Boeing and Airbus heavy jets around the world he now had the chance to fulfil his sailing dreams. He found the right design vessel, had it built and saved up a kitty. He also found the right girl! Finally it was time.
UNTIE THE LINES
I hope that our videos inspire other dreamers to reach out, focus and obtain your dreams.
Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".
Life is not supposed to be about just getting by. I find it ridiculous to spend your life paying off a mortgage just so that at the end of if, you have somewhere to live. You’ve only got one shot at it, as far as I can tell…. so make it special. Dream big. Live in the “now”. Make every moment count…. towards your dreams
We’d love it if you give us the thumbs and SUBSCRIBE. Cheers 🥂

Hi guys, thanks for watching... it seems my opinions have raised a few questions, such as.... 1. Why is speed so important for a cruising sailboat? 2. Do you really need a larger cat to go fast? 3. and the ol' "Which is better for bluewater cruising, Cat or Mono?" Would love to hear your opinions!
@steveturansky9031
@steveturansky9031 3 жыл бұрын
1) Speed is fun and can provide safety if not overdone. It's so much more fun to sail reasonably fast and throttle back (reef) when the conditions dictate. It's nice to continue sailing in light air rather than be forced to motor. Speed can also help you sail out of harms way if a storm is on it's way. 2). Larger cats contribute to comfort by reducing the (fore/aft) pitching at sea. Above 40' also allows for full standing headroom in saloon without looking top heavy. Additionally, the waterline makes a difference, even on fast cats unless you can get it up on a plane. 3). Cat (or multi) vs Mono still comes down to personal preference. Mono's have the following advantages: A) Cheaper to buy, maintain and berth (store at marina/dock). B) Typically sail upwind better than a cat. C) Mono's are less weight sensitive (You can pile alot of weight on them). In most other categories, Cat's have the advantage: A) Speed when beam reaching or downwind. B) Living space for people, solar panels, water toys and dinghy's. C) Maneuverability/redundancy when motoring. D) Better motion at sea (my preference). E) Shallower draft for anchorages/sand bars. F) Many multi's are unsinkable. The Cat/Multi advantages list continues but those are the major ones I can think of right now. My preference is definitely a Cat/Multi, as long as I afford it.

1. With a fast boat you can try to outrun weather, which is probably safer than to endure it, esp on ocean passages. 3. Rich cruisers tend to buy cats. If I had the money I would buy an alu cat for general cruising and liveaboard. Bigger, more stable, less wet and normally faster, more deck space for solar and greater technical redundancy. But I also want to visit high lats (Alaska and British Columbia) for very long times out, that takes lots of suppliers calling for a higher displacement boat like the Pelagic boats. Me being too short on money, for the same amount of money I would prefer to buy a sturdy alu bluewater monohull of adequate size and better quality equipment than a cat of mediocre quality and rigging.

Sup. 1. Like others have pointed out, speed is crucial for avoiding or escaping dangerous weather, unless your sailboat is durable enough to withstand rough water, which I highly doubt it will, and please don't risked it. 2. Why not? If you can afford a performance model, but please keep in mind that these models are more designed for performance and NOT so much for practicality and comfort. Some sacrifices will varied depending on one's demands out of their sailboat. 3. From my experience. Nothing beats the speed and sailing performance of a monohull and they're great starting sailboats for those with a tight budget. Cats on the hand are awesome for those whom may want a little bit more room and comfort for their sailing adventures. They're also very stable and much more user friendly...well expect for the maintenance.

As to 2) a definite NO . While displacement (non planing) monohulls suffer from max hull speed which is defined by their hull length (longer is faster) , well designed multihulls with narrow hulls (length to beam ratio >= 12) do not have this limit . That is why the Rolex Fastnet was recently won by a 42 ft cat (Marsaudon Composites TS42) in competition with much longer cats . A similar TS42 also won the 2020 ARC rally and set a new record .

I love the overall design of the Mumby 48. Aesthetically, from beam on it isn't my favourite, but I can easily get past that when I consider all the benefits it brings. The dagger boards and kick up rudders are genius. Welded-in deck fittings and hatch frames, brilliant. You talk in later videos about welding in aluminum though hulls, another great idea. All together most of these things, in my mind, potentially take out 'some' of the the mundane tasks and expense of GRP boat ownership and really when you get right down to it, make for a much stronger built boat. I was talking to someone about what is better, GRP or aluminum for a boat. What he said has stuck with me- "There is a reason the Coast Guard builds their boats out of aluminum and not GRP." You say you have it 'loaded down' and it still blows around in the lightest of breezes. I think when you are finished with your circumnavigation Mr. Mumby might want to talk to you about a job promoting his product! You might have a second career waiting for you. 😉👍🏾

I just found your channel and will be binge watching to catch up. I lived/worked in the PI for 7 years in the 80's (West coast of Zambales, Luzon) , then returned to USA and built my 31' F-9A trimaran. It was launched it in 1993 and I still have it but I want to cruise on a 42-47' cat now. It's hard to find one that's reasonably priced, performs good and is not an ex-charter beat-up boat. If I were younger, I'd build it myself but at 61, I don't have that energy anymore. I hope some of your episodes cover the building in the PI. I have a lot of questions for you but I'll start with basics: 1) Where in the PI did you build? 2) Where are you based at during the Covid lockdown? (edit - I'm sure this will be answered as I catch up with episodes) 3) Would you have it built in the PI again, if you had to do over again? 4) Were you at the build site for most of the build? Good Luck and Best of Wishes to you guys on your adventure (I will have many more questions)...
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. Glad you're watching... Yeah I wished we had started taking videos back when i was in PI... Still my favorite place, and probably where i will end up after the circumnavigation. El Nido perhaps. Sure, bring on the questions... 1. The designer/builder (aussie, Tim Mumby) had a yard set up in the little province town of Carmen, which is 2 hours bus ride north of Cebu city, Cebu. 2. We were stuck in Capetown... Hout Bay to be precise... It really is a beautiful spot there... but a bit scary during the lockdown, because of the very poor locals there, going hungry. 3. The big advantage of PI to build is labour costs are low... ($7-$15 usd per day for a labourer)... but the disadvantages are importing (or smuggling) your gear in... there are high import taxes, so you tend to smuggle as much as possible. 4. No i only visited for a few days most months. Cheers

Thanks for the tour, mates. Looks like a good design. Simple and sensible. Feedback: music was a bit annoying, and a lapel microphone would improve the sound a lot. Thanks Rabukan... Yep ally cat. There's no official specs around... Specs are so subjective, and really difficult to compare oranges with oranges... You cant fairly compare boats on paper when they are tested with different sea states, winds, loadings, crews etc... And never believe the manufacturers performance specs! From experience these boats go well... Much better than condo cats... Recently I had an unofficial match with an Atlantic 55 and we out performed it... Twice. Another Mumby Sulanga (Cape Town) led the Cape to Rio cruising division for much of the way, until they retired due to not wanting to risk some severe weather. It's a great performance cruiser and a true blue water cat.

I like how nicely simple you have made this catarmaran, which obviously has allowed you to purchase a new and decent size Yacht for a significantly lower price no doubt. Nice yacht Jamie. If I had the cash I would buy the same and copy your fit out philosophy. Keep it simple and get sailing sooner in your dream boat..

Thanks James... Water maker coming up... Wine doesn't last long enough to warrant a cellar..(my excuse to keep the boat light)... Coffee is a percolator on the stove..... Do you realize that this is was Simon Pickett's fault! Didn't you come sailing with the Picketts once?

Life on Jupiter I did but remember the big Bronco they had to pull it more than the sailing 🤷🏽‍♂️. Did some sailing with Roger for a while and learnt a lot of getting every ounce of speed from little wind. Might find a way to get the kids out for a sail one day and see if they take to it - will be an excuse to get out myself.

This design makes a lot of sense. Question rather than having two wet toilet areas are there any reasons not to have a dedicated toilet and shower. Privacy two up should not be an issue.
@SailingLifeonJupiter

Sure could... Although we all hate the stinky things, I am happy to have 2 toilets... If any guests are aboard we send them to the far one... And at least twice so far, one has become unserviceable...

AWESOME introduction of your boat and yourselves! Your extended back story was excellent and really inspiring. Love the aluminum boat, how thick was the Aluminum used? It is very clear you've developed excellent do it yourself skills, so what if you made something to organize the spare lines in the laundry room...something similar to an oversized rack for men's ties, except scaled for all the spare lines? An easier fix could be just installing a heavy duty shower curtain rod to hang them from? Anyway, that's just a couple of quick ideas, you've probably got it handled by now. Cheers!

Thanks for the tour of your special cat... I like it , I do understand that aluminum light weight and keeps the coast down... although can be very labor intensive due to Corrosion , every crack and crevice that you can not see . So for me I will stick with Carbon Fiber . Robert North Star

Thanks Robert. Yeah, the stiff/strong ally build gives great confidence in bigger seas, or reefs or even lightning storms! There's around 40 of these built so far, either by the designer himself, his brother, or owner/builders... If you're clever enough you can knock one up yourself for about $200k...but I got the designer to make mine and it cost around $300k usd....
