Ok, how did he NOT cover the crimson grapefruit? That’s a wild story right there. So back in the 1950’s, some farmer was like, “man, these grapefruits aren’t very sweet, and their flesh isn’t very appealing. Wonder if I can change that?” So he planted a bunch of grapefruit trees in concentric circles and then stuck a rod of Uranium in the middle of all the circles and called it a day. The ones at the center died, the ones at the outer edge did nothing and the ones in between mutated into the red grapefruit we all know and love. Because uranium was really popular after the war.

Especially the avocado. It evolved to take advantage of all the huge mammals of the last ice age, going for a huge seed because it gave the offspring more nutrients to start off with while still being able to fit through the digestive tract of a wooly mammoth or something. Of course, once those went away, it was looking at extinction too, but then humans are like “hey, you’re tasty. And don’t worry about your seeds not being able to pass through our gut. We have this little thing called agriculture”

wheat and rye already are the steroid versions of grasses. You know when you stroll with shorts through a grassy field in summer? The tiny sticky things itching in your socks: that's what undomesticated wheat look like. Also rye and some other non-wheat wheats were most likely created by accidental breeding. Wheat fields probably used to be overgrown with weeds and people had to weed them out by hand and eye. Weeds with bigger grain and longer rachis got overlooked more often and thus began their domestication by looking more and more like wheat.

Actually the word "Korn" also exist in German but it is a general word for cereals and not maize specifically, the same way in Old English "Corn" was used for the grain of all cereals but somehow throughout the centuries its meaning got twisted and became synonymous with maize.

Maize used to be called Indian Korn and as João, it just meant grain. Obviously the Americas weren't India so they were wrong about that too. Eventually Indian corn just became corn.

Thai eggplant are roughly the same size and shape of an egg. It was when they became available at the grocery store for a short while that I realized why eggplants were called eggplants actually. It’s funny though since their colour is green and white and they’re striped so they more closely resemble ancient watermelons.

This might be closer to ancient truth than realised. Watched a show about tribal humans of today and one of the key things they did was make moonshine out of banana skins and honey, leaving the sugar in the fruit skins to ferment the water into alcohol during the day heat. All fruit eventually rots and will eventually ferment and produce alcohol, which is why animals that roam outdoor can sometimes be found behaving unnaturally from being drunk off all the fermented fruit they've eaten (goats getting stuck up trees etc).
