Yeah good point. I really enjoyed hearing how much GM improved this new motor and other technical components compared to prior gen products. When the 2.7L Turbo debuted in the CT4-V, I was underwhelmed by a big 4-cylinder like that, but to actually hear all the major enhancements it has, has actually turned around my opinion of it. Great job GM and thank you Savagegeese!

@@G-Rated Yeah, when a business is really feeling the pressure, they have incentive to 'get their shit together'. I don't see this as amazingly virtuous or anything. It's to a large degree just survival dynamics. And that can involve being wise enough to not try and compete through doing exactly what others are doing, but offering something for people who aren't content with what others are offering.

Had been considering one of these. It's larger on the outside in every dimension but smaller on the inside than the last one. The interior space on a lot of these mid size trucks is inexcusable for how big they are. Ridgeline and the Frontier are the only ones I have enough space in.

We just got a new Frontier on our fleet at work. Absolutely would not recommend. MPG is comparable to a V8 full-size truck, the start-stop is very harsh and jarring. Turning that stupid feature off is the first thing I do when I get in. And no it barely makes a difference to MPG. Despite being a base model the sound system is good. But it doesn't even have power mirrors, what a joke. I've done a cross-country road trip in a previous gen Canyon... I'd say the Frontier is still lagging behind that one when it comes to suspension tuning, let alone the new gen being reviewed in this video that I've never driven. The 2022/2023 Frontier would have been competitive... 10 years ago.

Finally, one company is building a midsized truck with the refinement and capabilities it deserves which helps justify the price they're asking for them. Is looks like they are closer to their full-size counterparts than ever and that's a good thing. Now let's see if all those truck buyers that can't handle or even park their trucks now will realize midsized truck can fill all your needs and are much easier to use on a daily basis. That's without even considering how much easier they are to use off-road.

Thanks for the informative review. I agree that GM put a lot of thought and engineering into this new mid-size truck and got it 98% right. I don’t want or need a full size truck but feel like I am getting all the same benefits with this mid-size edition. I have no problem with the 4 banger given what the engine is capable of, my only complaint is that there is no noticeable MPG advantage over the V6 or 8. If you are complaining about the price, then you haven’t shopped for full size trucks or SUVs with comparable interior trims and tech recently. Full size Denali is close to $80k. I think this truck hits the sweet spot!

As a one week owner of a Colorado Z71, you hit the nail on the head perfectly. 1. I love the interior space. Being 5’9”, I have zero issues. The interior quality is leagues better than the previous AND it doesn’t feel like a claustrophobic hell-hole inside. The previous Colorado/Canyon was just stuffy, boring, cheap, and uncomfortable. 2. The styling is on point. Looks better than the Silverado and they’re muscular. The only trim I don’t like is the Trail Boss since it looks like a work truck and you don’t get many features on the inside as compared to a fully loaded LT for $2k less. 3. The drivetrain and suspension is surprisingly awesome. Coming from an SS 1LE that had magnetic ride, this truck is like riding on a cloud. I loved the 1LE suspension because, for how low and stiff it is, it was very comfortable. This truck is even more comfortable which is crazy for a midsize truck. It soaks up road bumps and small holes, and it handles corners very well. The engine is smooth and powerful. The stop start feature isn’t jarring nor intrusive. I’ll be going 85 down the highway and hardly notice because of how well the truck performs and feels. Highly recommend this truck. It will probably be my daily for a few years and then I may be switching to the Tacoma. But, we shall see.

I drove alongside a new Colorado Z71 for a while the other day, and the guy doing the test-drive absolutely nailed the throttle from a stop. I don't know why but with 430 ft lbs of torque and 300+ horsepower I expected to see this truck fly off the line. It's shocking to me how, despite all the different engine options available in the midsize segment, all the trucks more or less have the same performance regardless of their engine output. The new Ranger Raptor will obviously lead the pack in terms of quickness nowadays, but I just remember the 99 f150 lightning being in something like a high 5 seconds to 60 mph situation, and it had approximately the same horsepower and torque as these new gm twin midsizers. The new colorado is pretty chunky, its around 5000ish pounds. Fullsize pickup weight with a full size pickup engine. Its transmission is tuned for smoothness and torque delivery more than just speed. The new ranger raptor will probably have a 0-60 of around 5-7 seconds since it's also over 5000 pounds, its power to weight ratio isn't that much different than a new ranger xlt with the 2.7 v6. The lightning only weighed like 4600 and was only tuned for speed and had 360 horsepower vs the 310 in the colorado

Surprisingly this 2.7t 4 cylinder has been doing well in terms of reliability. It's the current gen Silverado most reliable engine that utilizes the cylinder deactivation. Even over the 6.2 and 5.3 v8 that have the cylinder deactivation. Without the the cylinder deactivation it's still the 5.3 and 6.2. I still don't understand why they won't throw in the 10 spd. To me seems odd to keep utilizing the older updated transmission when they have a more superior transmission that they could use.

Diesel makes no sense in America for anything smaller than a Class 6 truck. It costs more upfront, costs more for fuel, has emissions equipment that's a nightmare post-warranty, makes less power, and reduces payload and often towing because it weighs so much. Yea, you get 20% more miles per gallon, but you pay 40% more per gallon. Sure it makes more torque, but engine torque doesn't matter, wheel torque does, and thanks to torque convers and transmissions the engine that makes more power *should* make more wheel torque.

I think overall they made some good improvements here and between the Canyon and the Colorado seem to offer something for more than enough needs in the mid size class. That being said, upon hearing they were moving to a gas turbo 4 for the next generation we decided to go with a Duramax ‘22 since we previously had one and loved it (had to get rid of it due to 3 child seats not fitting in it now kids are older so they can fit in the back ironically) and my wife was due for a new daily. Happy with our decision as it suits ogre use case perfectly and it gets amazing mileage for the remote, rural area we live. I am 6 foot and can sit behind my seating position ok, it’s acceptable but not amazing. The fact the new truck decreased the rear leg room was a pretty poor design flaw as it really limits the use ability and comfort for family use. I love Toyotas but the Tacoma’s seating position is just awful to us and took it out of contention for us. With having a farm, 3 kids, living in an area that gets 300” of snow a year, hauling 5 humans and their mountain bikes, and my wife travel nursing/commuting in it, it’s such a good little truck. Summer blend diesel we see 32-35mpg regularly on our two lane roads around here and that’s with the chin spoiler removed and a leveling kit on it. The new truck’s interior is an improvement no doubt but honestly as normal people who use trucks for truck things, I have zero issues with our 22 and the technology does everything we want or need and more.

You say that as if the *AT4X* is a base model Canyon. $50k is A LOT for _any_ new car. You don’t have to go all out on a top of the line AT4X trim in order to obtain a nice capable truck. So tired of seeing this same recycled & bogus comment reposted over and over again.

Sierra AT4X is about $80k for perspective. The average car price is now $50k. It does suck but do any of us expected vehicle prices to go down? I ordered a nearly loaded Canyon AT4 for $48,580. I didn’t opt for the package with leather seats but I’m okay with that. Still crazy but my 2014 Toyota Highlander was $43k. I’m also in the market to replace my wife’s 2012 Camry and I didn’t care for an EV but after driving one for a week, I’m sold. I guess a Model 3 after incentives and rebate at $32k is a steal.

The issue of mid-size versus full-size is one i've been grappling with. I love the roominess and comfort of a full-size (as well as payload and towing capabilities) but hate driving it around town or urban areas. Parking is always stressful. That's where the mid-size comes in. They've been underpowered (until now) but much easier for city driving and parking and able to handle most of my day-to-day needs.

Very refreshing to finally hear mention of vehicle pricing. The question you pose is exactly correct. Will a person move towards a bigger truck bye to pricing as you build out one of the “smaller” trucks? To me, the answer would be no simply because as you move to a bigger vehicle, it gets insanely expensive so any reasonable person simply swallows the crap that is given only because it allows you to be at a now reasonable price point. The era of being able to get a full size truck to work with is way over. One must now look towards these smaller trucks as a way to affordable step in to the truck world. Thankfully it appears according to this review that at least GM is stepping up the game to give a better performing product and not the “shit box” experience of the past at this level.

At 6'2" iI have no problems with cabin room even with my teenagers in the rear. The Ridgline is roomier and drives better on the road, but if you tow or offroad this is truck for you. Maybe I am biased but the TB looks better then any other truck option mid or fullsized at the moment. Maybe the new Tacoma will change that where the new Ranger has decided looking obsolete at launch is the plan. (GMC looks AARP certified to me)

I believe GM and Ford are laying the groundwork for the midsize trucks being the future volume trucks for their companies. As regulations tighten, these full-size trucks will be out of step from a fuel economy and size perspective for casual use by consumers. A Ford F-150 Lariat is now a $60K+ vehicle which is way beyond what an average consumer can afford. The full-size trucks used to come with a ton of incentives on them to move and finance the purchase. I n 2023, it appears the manufacturers want to reduce the need for incentives.

Mid-size trucks get almost the same fuel efficiency as the full-size. I love the character of mid-size trucks. But objectively, full-size are just better at everything except narrow off-road trails. This category of trucks almost disappeared from America 12 years ago for a reason; and I suspect this resurgence will only last 2 generations. Shame, because I really do like the unquantifiables of this segment.

Midsize trucks are getting really good. I hope that results in a lot of people who rather pointlessly opt for full-size trucks, to now go midsize next time around. The vast majority of truck owners do not use their trucks for legitimate heavy-duty work. The fact that the Colorado and Ranger just ditched all configurations except crew cab short bed is a sign of the times. They're predominantly commuter and family vehicles now, with the "do anything and work hard" image. This tows and hauls enough for the vast majority of the suburbanite buyers. It's a lot easier to live with a midsize than a fullsize, so maybe people will start making their daily lives easier by opting a little smaller. And smaller is relative, because these midsize trucks are about as large as full-size used to be.

It seems like the new motor is really well thought-out. Obviously there will be early recalls but intrigued to see how it holds up over time. Common sense says turbos are no bueno for long-term reliability, but it really does depend on how it's made. I've seen plenty of the recent Honda CRV 1.5 turbos creep up towards 300k miles so far, although the turbo itself may have to be replaced along the way. I've also seen plenty of Ford ecoboosts hit well over 300k, although I'm sure Ford mechanics will say those are the exception 😅

You said it, they are almost like a 1500. I changed my canyon denali diesel for a silverado 2.7 because the newer canyons were not arrived yet. (Did not want that POS 3.6). I like the silverado but i miss the nimble side of my canyon. It was so easy to manoeuver in thight spaces. And i can't imagine how the same 430lbs/ft of torque feels in this smaller truck. One thing i noticed tho, even if they built it to run on regular gas, you feel the ecu pulling the timing quite often. There's a very slight jarryness. I tried premium gas and it disapeared, but the difference is not enough to justify the price for premium gas.

The primary reason I've owned full size trucks for 30+ years is the bed size - the versatility of being able to haul extremely large, tall, heavy or oddly shaped things, which I do a lot of. In modern trucks, the 'long' 6.5' bed option is a must, and the 5' 8" option is just too short. So this is the only reason why I would never buy one of the new midsize trucks. If they could figure out a way to have a 6 to 6.5' box, I would be a potential buyer.

I've been considering this truck as a compliment to an older Duramax that I need for 5th wheel towing. I recently was looking at used Tacoma's as a solution but they are very expensive and don't have the more modern interior or powertrain of the Canyon. People are going to have to live with the fact that $58k now buys a very well equipped mid size truck or low end 1/2 ton. Really only two factors are holding me back from an AT4 or possibly AT4X - 1. availability 2. Will they work for my 10 and 8 year old kids to ride around in back?

More of a "it's good enough for everything so we're not offering alternatives" vs offering an engine that excels in MPG (2.8L Duramax) or raw capability (V8). Would the 3.0L Duramax really not fit in one of these?

Wish they had a light switch on the column instead of the infotainment screen. (Hopefully minor of its on automatic). Maybe the direct injection will do pretty well on this truck.(Hoping so). Rough mpg numbers? I'm almost interested in a new Colorado, but yes same issue I had with the ranger, nearly the price of an f150 without enough size or mpg advantages to set it apart favorably. I waited a year on a maverick order before they boned me and I walked away rather than pay more for less features on a 23. Fake truck, but was ideal for me as a commuter besides my sports car but able to tow light trailers and put a few hay bales in the back for my hobby farm covering a few utility needs. I started looking into and following what's said about these trucks since they were first confirmed to going into production. I have thought that the price of these, and the Colorado are quite high, but then I look into what the full-sized trucks are selling for, and makes the prices of the midsize trucks seem somewhat normal (let's be honest, every vehicle is overpriced). I think what GM did with these trucks is smart. They reduced the number of body configurations (they realized that upwards of 80% of the prior gen were ordered and sold as quad-cabs, so making single or extended ones still wasn't beneficial anymore), as well as using a refined version of a field-tested and/or proven powertrain from their full-sized trucks was smart, and reduced the cost of making more than one engine type. I think that they also realized that the majority of these trucks will be bought by people that live in the city, and will use them as a 5-seater commuter vehicle the majority of the time, but want the practicality of the pickup for when they need to do truck stuff or mild overlanding on occasion. As the presenter mentioned, I think the changes to the interior are what surprise people the most, and it's not the potential deal-breaker that it might have been in the older ones. The only thing I think is dumb, is there being no physical buttons for the headlights and tail lights, and that you have to set them up in the infotainment system instead. I can see this changing in the next couple of model years if enough people complain about it. I think the Denali is beautiful, but the High Country or AT4 (middle-level) trims will be the most popular, since they will balance creature comfort and tech with mild offroad capability. The same can be said for the Colorado (The Z71 is my favorite, the 20" rims suit it's body lines really well, the available leather and power group in the interior, and option to calibrate the engine for H.O and optional skid plates and rear locker make it a compelling package).

A naturally aspirated V6 Frontier costs less and offers the extended cab and 6ft bed that I prefer. The Tacoma V6 does as well and it's barely more expensive with monumentally better resale value than the Canyon/Colorado. The new Ranger is priced astronomically. Domestics are now priced higher than their Japanese competition. Get the hell out of here with that. I'd love to buy a domestic, but they're a poor value.
