Recently the owner of Sandland was in a car accident and it's thrown things for a bit of a loop. He's recovering, but digging and volunteer organizing have gotten a little disorganized. We have a GoFundMe running to help him out with immediate expenses as he navigates the American insurance and medical industries: www.gofundme.com/f/slim-jims-...
(All donations go directly to Jim, not to me, this channel, or Sandland).
Much like our digging schedule, this video is a bit of a mess! We've got Sandland and Sand Bar projects all over the place in no particular order! We're expanding the bar, expanding the closet, making the manhole deeper, fixing broken stuff, using new haulage routes, catching up on old footage, and just generally trying to do everything at once! With the owner recovering from his accident, more of the volunteers are helping out wherever they can.
Stay tuned for future Sandland updates and projects!

Exciting project. One thing to keep in mind, I noticed your Cell Phone Booster had wiring coming into to it from the top. This means water (condensation) can travel along the cable, and down to the unit and eventually break any seal it has. Better practice always to allow the cable allow water to drip off it before it goes into any box/unit. That apllies even when cables enter from the bottom of the unit.

I would recommend home-made desiccant packs spaced periodically within the tunnel system, calcium oxide or salt in plastic bottles/containers with holes in the tops should be an easy way to continuously de-humidify the air without getting a dehumidifier and having to constantly empty it. Just take the bottles outside when they are completely saturated and let them dry inside the packaging in the sun. Once they’re dry just crush up clumps and then bring them back inside. Save-it-for-parts approved way to make sure you stay safe from fungi, viruses, bacteria, off-gassing, rust, general lung issues from 100% humidity, and not being able to sweat. Well wishes to the owner of these marvelous sand tunnels.

Check out a town called Coober Pedy in South Australia. Much of the community lives underground in houses dug into the side of hills due to the summer heat which is up to 50C(122F)! They use many home-made machines to dig their tunnels with large rotating digging heads and vacuums to remove the dust.

Heya Gabe, wish Jim well. Would a dehumidifier help with the high humidity down in the tunnels, or is it a 'feature' of working underground in the sandstone? Also, perhaps it would be a good idea to start wrapping your strip lighting in transparent conduit to protect them from moisture? Anyhoo, progress looks good. Have fun ;)
@saveitforparts

The humidity is something of a feature and actually helps stabilize the sandstone. If it dries out it gets crumbly, but if you leave it alone it stays stable pretty much forever.

Considering the size of your material on average, you could easily put in a pneumatic system. Just use air to push all that material through pipes. You might even have an added bonus by pumping in dryer air. Of course that whole problem would be solved if you put proper doors and an air conditioner on there. Leasing out some workspace in there would be a boon and Jim's situation right now
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Жыл бұрын
We've dabbled in pneumatic sand moving with just a shopvac, it wasn't strong enough. We don't have city power, so any vacuum or conveyor system has to run on a gas engine or small generator.

Hey, thanks for referring to us as "astronomers". I mean, I guess we are, de facto, astronomers. But we're mostly just semi-retired engineers with an interest in radio astronomy, and a whack of "wouldn't it be cool" projects that other people might want to do :) Well, OK, also we operate out of a former NATO base with a 12.8m satellite antenna that we're using for radio astronomy. @stevesether
@stevesether 10 ай бұрын
The Soudan mine experiments were primarily about filtering out comic ray radiation. So extremely low background radiation was needed. This they're trying to do something with RF, so low EM transmissions. Similar in that both environments are looking for low noise, but entirely different kinds of noise. I'd be really curious what they're trying to do, and why this is a good environment. I'd expect an radio signals from 327 mhz wouldn't penetrate earth well.

I think they make micro excavators as narrow as 2.5'. Maybe I'm not understanding something or maybe the owner is poor. Anyway that looks cool AF and if I had soil that didn't have to reinforced to prevent collapse I would love to make something like that. What area is that and what is that soil called? Is it just sandstone or does it have a different technical name? Welcome to America! Where you never know how much the hospital will cost, if it will be covered, or how you'll pay for it!

@@saveitforparts I mean I know the memes, but after doing some 2 minute research insurance prices and services seem to be pretty similiar to EU standards, just that they're optional things to get. does slim jim have insurance at all? xd

Insurance in the US for auto and medical expenses are designed with difficult to comprehend language, coverage blindspots all over the place, and many times even when you're "covered" for part of something happening a random specialist or treatment or medicine or location you got treated at is not and there's no way to request to only have things done by things covered under your insurance. Neither doctors, patients, or anyone invlolved in care have a surefire way of knowing what will or won't be paid for by insurance before something is done, only after. It's essentially financial Russian Roulette. It's possible for doctors to work in the same hospital and have some but not others be paid by your insurance, and you don't find out until months later because you were never personally billed, your insurer just refused payment, then you discover you've been sent to collections for a bill you've never seen. It's fucking awful and there's no solution, by design. Health Insurance companies in the US are leeches bleeding us to death in our most vulnerable moments and pay handsomely to keep things that way.

@@carpespasm I see.. so while healthcare exists and is affordable, it's spotty in its coverage. Interesting. Was this obama care thing any different?
