First rapper with a flat top in 85, Philly had flat tops or “boxes” in 84 while everybody else was still in Jheris and baby fros

Yup! I'm from western New York, and when the flat top first appeared here it was called the "Philly." It was years later before we called it a box or a fade.

I was listening to Schooly D when he first showed on the scene. I remember being blown away by how raw and powerful he was. I used to love smokin a doob and listening to Saturday Night. Being a white boy listening to rap in the early and mid 80's, I knew only a handful of other people who listened to rap. And it was mostly Dougie Fresh, RUN DMC, Whodini etc. I would play Schooly D and people would say "Man, that's crazy music, it's too profane." And I would say that he's just rapping about reality. No fantasy bullshit. He got straight to the point and delivered hard! When NWA got big, all the same people jumped on the ganster rap bandwagon. I would tell them that Schooly was rapping like that when NWA was singing love songs ( World Class Wrecking Crew).

Word the fuck UP! I saw schooly D at the videomusicbox 25th anniversary free show in central park, and among all the old school acts, he was the only one who cursed and said bitch, etc. You could hear the audience not feeling it and kind of booing, but he didn't care. It was kind of funny because he stuck to his words from way back then. "We're not like your other rappers, we say things they're afraid to say"

I remember one time i went to this very club, Latin Quarters. It was one of those Saturday nights in which I went club hopping. I would take the Path train from my home town ( Newark, N.J.) head on out to the scene. Anyways, I am Puerto Rican but I look very very white. So there i am having a good time, I went alone, and asked this gorgeous nubian lady to dance with me she agreed and we were having a nice time. I was having a drink just enjoying myself all of a sudden I see a tall black guy dressed like a B-Boy Kangol hat and Addidas Shell toes, belt buckle with his nickname i assume and Gazelle shades to top it all off. I thought to myself oh shit it's bought to pop off. See I had encounter numerous times throughout this decade black guys getting really pissed off that i would be with a beautiful black girl. But, the guy comes up pulls on a chain that was wrapped around his neck and at the very end of it was a NYPD detectives badge. I damn near choked on my drink. He asked me to follow him so i did. He took me to this small office and said he believed that i was selling drugs. Well needless to say i wasn't and he frisked me gave me the ole' rigmarole and that he'd be watching me, blah, blah, blah. I know it was a long drawn out tale but seeing this old footage reminded me of that encounter.

@pwr1965 Are you crazy son? I love Schooly D. since 1985 but how in the world would you make that statement about KRS ONE?? You don't know Hip-Hop because it represents a culture of a people. KRS One represents that culture from many different angles that Schooly just wasn't dealing with. Hip Hop needs them both and to separate and try to battle them just shows a lack of understanding. A lot of cats want KRS ONE! Dont get it twisted.

I remember what him and his friends used to do. All the pool party's. Hey, It's Los Angeles. Guess they danced like that in the 80's and did they gangsta shit like that in NY.
