The first use of the Schrade 240T Old Timer was a little difficult at first; but once I stopped using it as a Mora and started using it the way it was meant to be used I fell in love with it.

Here's an idea for your Mora get a short piece of pvc pipe what ever inside diameter you need and two pvc caps. That would allow you to carry it in your pack.

That is a really great idea!!! My favorite part about KZfaq is how we can all Learn and Grow Together!!! Thank You so much for sharing your knowledge. I have actually come to really enjoy using my Schrade. It is small and I can put it in my pocket for day hikes and shorter trips. It really has gotten a lot more use since I made this video!!! Thank You so much for watching I really appreciate the support!!! I pinned your comment so maybe you can help someone else with your idea!!!

It is way more inexpensive than the carving jack. The more I use this the more comfortable it is making different things.

I really like this tool. You have to be careful with the longer tools because they are pretty bendy. For the money I think it works really well though.

Thanks for the review Kory. I wasn't sure on the quality of the knife, I thought about it, because Schrade isn't really the original Shrade anymore and made in China now. Sounds like you had no problem though. That's nice because it's like a compact carving set. I like whittling to when I'm camping, I mostly did faces in the sticks, not a pro by any means. I've been wanting to attempt to carve a spoon but don't have the right carving tools to do it.

It's not as good as the carving Jack but it is much cheaper. The 24OT isn't the most durable tool but I still enjoy using it.

It's not a 240-T, it's a 24-OT The O on all Schrade knives stands for "Old". So the model number is 24-Old Timer.
@newageselfreliance

I didn't know that. Thank You so much for sharing your knowledge I really appreciate it. I have been calling this thing a 240 T for almost a year now.

Its not 240 T. It's 24 OT. OT stands for Old Timer. 😉

I hear that a lot about the 24OT the quality control isn't consistent. The better option would be the Carving Jack ( amzn.to/2WqmwXw ) but that is over 4 times the cost.
@mrMacGoover

@@newageselfreliance which is why I bought the Schrade 240T, plus if I loose the carving bug it's not as big of a loss. I can pick the more expensive option up at a local store for under 200 Canadian if I get really into it, I like the idea that it locks in the open position.... The carving jack that is.
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 4 жыл бұрын
@@mrMacGoover I've looked at getting the Carving Jack a few times but the Schrade gets the job done. I don't think I do enough carving to justify the large expense.

Hey bro , kinda off subject but do ya have any experience with the ka-Bar "spork / knife combo ?
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 2 жыл бұрын
I do not. I'm not really a fan of the Spork design. I like having a fork and spoon built into the same design rather than the all-in-one fork spoon combo. The combo spork really doesn't have long enough tines to be a good fork and because of the tines, it doesn't really make a good spoon either. My favorite spork so far is the UCO Switch which can be used as a fork, spoon, knife, or long-handled spoon or fork. It is the same price as the KaBar but it is much more versatile.

@@newageselfreliance 👍 , thanks for the info . Yeah looking to upgrade some of my "packed cookware" I've used plastic forks and spoons in the past (grabbed a handful at the holiday gas station lol) but don't wanna do that any longer . looking at that cold steel all-in one I didn't realise there's a sharpened side of the spork for cutting ? No thanks

Hey your video review was great, how's your 24ot holding up?
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 5 жыл бұрын
It's doing really well. I only use the round tools though. The V tools are hard to sharpen and the straight chisel tools are very flimsy and feel like they would break under normal use. For a spoon carving knife it works really well. For the price I think it's a great option.

I used the 24ot on a smoking pipe I had been working on, the bowl was almost an inch deep. But those two curved blades carve out that material so smoothly. Have you used the carving jack? Asking for comparison reasons.

Just got the 24 OT. Very difficult to get and keep an edge. Blades too thick and too wide a bevel. Roughing blade needs to be ground much thinner to be useful. I spent3 hours on mine. Save a lot of aggravation and pass on the knife. These days it’s dull as toast out of the box. China can’t or won’t make this knife worth having.

Have you looked into getting the Carving Jack? It is 5 times more expensive but I hear it's a much better product. amzn.to/3gcIghf There is also a Pocket Jack that is much more affordable but it doesn't have a "spoon" or curved blade which is what I use the most often.

To be honesty I don't whittle much at all anymore. I have made a few spoons just for the practice of making spoons but I haven't kept up with it. I watch Doug Linker ( kzfaq.info/love/-eOXKXJ2GQ1gewivwNxYKQ ) and I have some of his videos saved to try out later but I just haven't found the time.
