As a first generation hunter, I want to thank you so much for posting this video. currently planning my first hunt here in Texas, and I'll tell you, it's very intimidating going out for my first time. your guidance is helping me and my son out tremendously, and for that I say thank you!

This last year was my introduction to hunting at age 45. I didn't get anything, duck, grouse, rabbit - nothing. Public land is like a parking lot. I will take some of your ideas and try them next year. That means more bushwacking and swamps. Looks like I'm gonna get my feet wet!

great video, you're one story about your friend getting on at 11 an hour after he got to the stand reminds me of my uncles buck. He was hunting public land in PA and he was drinking at the cabin the night before. everyone got up early and went he woke up around 11. walked up a hill and sat down on a log. only 5 minutes went by and a 140" 11pt came running down the hill, he thinks it got pushed by people deeper in. but it's crazy how things work out, ill def be using your tips thanks!

I have hunted Texas public land for many many years and it is well worth it for 45.00 a year but go in the off season and put some time in. A lot of the good hunting is in East Tx pineys the first weekend is usually busy with the weekend warriors from Houston after that you can find you have the whole place to yourself no kidding. There are places with 900 acres, places with 14,000 acres so be careful you can definetly get lost in them woods. The Tx public land is all primitive camp here hunt there the camping is pack it in pack it out. I've had great hunts there and hope to return there again in the future if you need any advice just ask me. Good luck

Wow! I live in Cook Forest, PA and primarily hunt in State game lands. Mountain forest hunting where I live and Allegheny Nat'l Forest just 5 minutes up the road. Great way to think about tree stands by others and find the best placement when the deer try and avoid the hunter tree stand that was just put up a week before season comes in to drive the deer towards me! People come from all over to hunt this area. I climb what I call heart attack hill and cross rivers where I know the deer feel safe. Pressure comes from other hunters looking for easy access points and drive the deer to me. That's how I get my doe's. Patience Lisa. Wait for the buck and don't take your first shot at a large doe. If you do take a doe leave the tarcal glands to cover my scent.

Nice vid! I like to get in early on public land. Like sasquatch gonna get me early. Then the woods settle, and I wait on some boob to come crunching in around dawn looking for a deer. Instead they push one to me. That's worked out many times. I also like to get in around 9am and set up around the main parking areas like someone else said for the same reason. Then go in to my areas around 11am or so. Deer often move around 1pm It seems, long after everyone has left. Pouring rain even better.

Some great tips here the wader one is my go to. If you walk a mile from your vehicle you eliminate almost 90% of the other hunters. Another one is don't hunt opening morning especially gun opener but drive around and look where other hunters are. A lot of hunters especially gun hunters hunt the same place year after year. Than scout where they didnt go. Or instead of parking at the public hunting parking lot park on the road.

Good tips. I hunt public land in the deep suburbs of Metro Detroit. A lot of pressure but the deer are there. I quit watching the "pro hunting" shows long ago. Anyone can hunt from a ridge line overlooking 5000 acres of corn or soybeans or on a ranch if given the opportunity. What I am amazed at is how tight lipped sportsman are about lending information. I hang out at gun and archery shops trying to learn (I do not come from a hunting family and we don't have land) and they are very hush-hush as if I'm going to hunt in their spot on their private land. I've looked for hunting mentors and some people want $25/hour, cash for their time. No thanks. Videos like this definitely help.

+seansoutdoor I'm all for you making money. Growing up in a non-hunting family, I watched from the sidelines as hunting/fishing and general outdoors activity is touted for it being a "heritage sport;" passing this knowledge of the land, hunting and conservation on to the next generation and others looking to get into it but I have found this only to be partially true. Thankfully, KZfaq has been a huge benefit because of contributors like you. Much obliged.

1st time hunter as well, but quickly growing familiar with topo maps. Rockies should provide some nice valleys and natural paths to a water source. That'd be something to look into as well. With the steep slopes look for the waterway down mountains, so dips in ridges, should look like this on a topo---> ))(( The closer the better indicating a natural waterway down the mountain. End of the day mammals still need food and water.

Be in your stand when others are moving, go a little deeper in the woods than others. My group's longtime hunting location recently turned to shit. ATV riders no longer care about the ban during hunting season. Other hunters have opted to be more cutthroat, stealing blinds/bait etc. Unfortunately, some of the worst gun owners are hunters

A hunter at my public hunting spot accidentally left a backpack on the ground next to his truck. Had a few valuables in it -- binocs, range finder, etc. Came back 30 minutes later and it was gone. No one but hunters usually park there -- prominent sign states you need a hunting permit on your dash. All the hunters are the nicest guys to chat with, but apparently one is a goddamn thief. People suck.

Reason is......I put in a lot of time money and effort and decided to hunt at a "friend" of mine private property which I met through my hunting club upstate NY Monticello So every year prior to this one I hunted with the club which we have about 800 acres and there’s only 24 members so this year I hunted not that far at this guys property he has 64 acres so I put in a lot of time money and effort to put up tree stands and cameras going upstate New York from Brooklyn New York every week checking the cameras out doing a lot of work and finally the season comes we hunted hard for a couple of nice bucks that we are running around we had them on camera nice one 120” 130” so opening day comes so we started hunting like crazy every chance we had I was upstate New York so After a few weekends during bow I see him looking out the window at night where he threw food in front of his window at his house all of a sudden a nice buck comes out with one doe chasing around he finally stops what does he do picks up the crossbow and shoots it from 15 yards at night 11 o’clock at night through the window of his house I couldn’t believe when I seen that so I don’t know what to do now so next morning I told him just leave it the next morning he go out there brings the deer and guts him i don’t know what to do I have all my stuff in his house ...long story short gun season comes and again a monster buck and night puts up feed comes right in front of his window 5 yards and he shoots it with a 7 mm that’s it man I am fuming so next day I just packed up my shit then I drove back to Brooklyn and I’m like I’m done with these motherfuckers I got a buy my own property I am just so disgusted after he was talking to other people on how he shot these two bucks “legit” which it was at night of course Then another good friend of his does th same thing and shot possibly one of the biggest bucks shot this year upstate ny at night through his window different property WTH is going on And the way they bull shit to others on how they shot it legit just makes me wanting to punch them in their faces But like I said from now on I will definitely do a hunting trip Illinois Ohio etc once a year until I buy my own property upstate..... BTW I shot a small 6 LEGIT last day of bow to put meat in freezer

So when do you normally set up a tree stand for a certain spot? How late is too late? I was thinking that it's almost never too early to do it but it's possible that the deer could switch to a new pattern or food source by the time the season comes around. I'm also pretty loud trying to hang a set so I will have to take that into consideration if I'd decide to hang one close to a bedding area or during a time when I will want to hunt the stand almost immediately.

Great tips, it all comes down to being at the right place at the right time. I've tried and tried to hunt these 160" public land bucks around here, it's nearly impossible, I miles back into the woods Hunting, and it all comes down to right place right time. Although like you said in the video Hunting where people don't go, I hunt in the thickest stuff I can find, I've managed to see more deer than most Hunting around here, would you happen to have any advice on Hunting late season mature bucks? So far I've seen 8 does and 2 bucks this entire season and I hunt probably 3-5 times a week and there's not many deer, where do the deer go late season? And is Hunting small springs and mountain runoffs good for Hunting?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
See often go into survival mode in late season, food and safety. Where is the food at and where are they not feeling hunting pressure? Go there. Also, mature buck will often not move much during daylight. You sometimes need to play off of other human activity in hopes they inadvertently push something your way. Lastly, I’ve actually been able to grunt in a few mature bucks in the late season so you may be able to entice one in looking for a late season doe coming into heat.

I really like your videos and recently purchased two of your videos. I had always hunted private land in the past and it was much easier to find deer. Now that I have started hunting public land it's been challenging. Based on my trail camera research they are mostly nocturnal. Hopefully with the help of your videos I'll still be able to harvest a deer. Thanks again!

The area I hunt,is packed with ppl.I've hunted it for over 30yrs.I know this place better then my home.Just ask anyone.Well,from my experience, most parking lots,can be the best place to be.I'm not kidding!! Most take yr and two yr olds.Me I'm taking 4n5 yr olds.90%,of my spots are no more the 150yrds,from the parking lot.I watch everyone,where they go,how they approach. Its real simple.I'm climb trees,right next to the parking spot.Ppl laughing at me,asking what I see.I can't say a word!!Now in the parking lots I take my tripod n camera out."shoot I'm just a bird watcher.lol..And I NEVER TELL ANYONE WHAT I SHOOT!I did that once.Then my stands come up missing. Funny thing is,there stealing my stuff,but I'm shooting deer.

Lonnie Hufnagel I can testify to that. I walk in maybe 300 yards from the parking lot and hunt from a folding stool. I've shot deer who bed down on a hill overlooking the parking lot. The deer actually head for that hill after the shooting starts to watch the hunters walking in and leaving. I also go into the same woods after the season when it snows to patten the deer trails. Happy hunting.

My best buck, a pnw blacktail, was 14 years old according to the biologist. What we call a " benchleg" being it was probably a blacktail/muledeer hybrid, he was heavy bodied, gutted with skin and head on he went 250 pounds. Had a cool revert rack, 4x2, 5×2 if you count an eye guard as a point(we dont on blacktail). Even at his ripe old age he had 5 does. Public land hunt, less than 200 yards from a pull off. Honestly, stopped to pee between units we hunted while trying to get my brother on a buck. Dont pee without a gun! Ya might jump your best deer.

So I recently found a late season bow hunting spot in a area that is normally heavily pressured. Im pretty sure that It is just outside of where the bulk of the pressure comes from. I hunted the area twice and had no action. After the second hunt which was a morning hunt i decided to scout some more and actually bumped a bedded buck that i believe is working the scrape and rub line that i found. He was about 80 yards down wind of his scrape. The area that i bumped him in was actually where i had marked a potential bedding area. I know he didn't see me and i would like to believe he didn't smell me. I think he heard me. He was bedded on the other side of a fallen tree with the wind to his back. I hope that I didnt disturb him too much. What I decided to do was leave my trail camera over looking his scrape and give the area some time to cool off. I sprayed my camera with some cover scent. Do you think i should have handled the situation differently? I am hunting Sherburne WMA in Louisiana. Very hard hunting here especially regarding the crazy weather.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm going to wait a week are so before I go back and ill do a camera check. From that point I will decide weather or not to set up and hunt or to move on. Thankyou for your time and consideration. Watching your videos I can see that you're a serious deer hunter and I admire that. I'm 21 years old and was forced to start hunting public land two years ago. The first year I only saw two deer and since then I have done much better regarding deer activity. I actually harvested my first public land buck this year as well as seen more deer then I have the two previous seasons. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. God bless you as well

In the Adirondacks, there's tons of state land. Down here, in the lower southern tier, forget it. I live in Southern Dutchess, and it sucks. The land is poorly managed, and the number of hunters outnumber the acres available. Excessive development has also put a beating on this area, which has forced many hunters I know, right out of the sport. I'm afraid I'm next. I'm actually the last of four family members who once hunted. They have literally built us right out of the sport, and it has also resulted in a 50% reduction in deer harvest in this area. Quite frankly, the DEC doesn't give a damn about the lower portion of the state, just the Adirondacks.
