I only discovered recently that the Japanese version of Strider has a ton more audio clips on it, he goes "ha" every time he swings his blade for starters. But the game that would have been cool on the Euro/US machine that's on the Japanese/Asian model is "Games in a Can", which is a load of 16 bit remakes of Master System games like Putt and Putter, Teddy Boy and Penguin Land.

I love my Genesis Mini. I think it's the best Mini/Classic console to be released so far. Now I would like to see SEGA release a console for the enthusiasts that will play the complete library of SEGA CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast games in HD, region free. SEGA shouldn't stop the momentum and needs to keep pounding out the hardware that gamers want! They need to learn how to take what they have, and learn how to present it to gamers of today in this vicious gaming market.

That catalogue definitely deserves to stay in people's libraries and its cool to have another way for today's kids to enjoy retro stuff.. I wonder if their little minds will be blown by no load times lol

Well it's about time you had one. I feel every Sega fan should at least have a Sega Genesis mini.

I only had Nintendo consoles growing up, and even now. So I had no idea this existed. I'm disabled so I didn't get out much haha. This is the only Sega item I own and it's very well made and fun.

I bought this the day it went live on Amazon Canada as I wanted one for sure, and I do not regret it at all. The games are awesome a cpl of tossers like Virtua fighter but otherwise solid line up. The controllers are a dream, granted no 6 button pads like they got in Japan but they feel original for the most part and work on PC with no issues.

Most of these emulation consoles have to shut down. NES and SNES Classic Edition consoles did this too. If you flipped the power switch back on before they finished shutting down they would finish shutting down while in the On position, which meant two more switch-flips to get them back on. The reason why is actually pretty obvious when you think about it. Unlike the original consoles, these things are basically computers with a filesystem. They store things like save states and settings where an original console had nothing to save. Like any operating system with a filesystem, you risk corrupting the filesystem when you kill the power in the middle of a write.

Though my first console was the Wii, The Sega Genesis was my first Retro Console I bought when I moved to the US. You have to understand that back in Turkey, the market for old systems was nonexistent, and I wasn’t happy emulating these games on my mom’s computer. So it was a magical moment when I found this giant box in the living room with a Genesis, Sonic 3K and Goldenaxe. I loved it !

The Wily Wars actually did come out in North America, but only on the Sega Channel.

Adam, if you hold down the start button on the controller for about 5 seconds you can access the save states menu. Or the mode button on a 6 button controller.

The Retro bit Genesis controllers USB, Bluetooth, or 2.4GHz has a button that automatically get to the menu if I recall correctly. I don't know about other USB controllers though.

I love my Genesis mini that I bought at launch.....still alittle salty Sega is not making the Mini Tower of Power available to the public so I could have one to sit beside my OG Tower of Power. Mega Man:The Wily Wars was here in the USA but only on the SEGA Channel. That is not a original controller =) the original ones did have the red painted A,B,C like the mini! Too access the menu in a game hold the start button.

Believe it or not I found a Genesis 3 on the side of the road. I guess it was an eviction because there was entire entertainment center TV DVD player everything. In a big ziplock bag on the new coach roadside was the Sega. Wires power brick 4 controllers and all. I only grabbed that plus a few PS3 sports titles and a few DS carts as well. I brought it home cleaned it up a little, it was really in immaculate condition. When hooked up I got a black screen. I started googling and looking around figured out that it needed a cleaning where the cart plugs in. Was slightly corroded. I cleaned it up with some isopropyl and it’s worked like a champ ever since. That was about eight months ago.

Even on the original Genesis, Sonic & Knuckles was designed with a universal cartridge. That's why it had a notch in the left. This is because the game obviously needed a custom cartridge design, which is hard enough to justify for a particular game as it is, so they didn't want to design more than one shell for it. If they had, the reduced economies of scale would have likely made it difficult to make a profit.

Few titles were actually released for the "tower of power". Game packages similar to Sega 32X packaging except the added CD to 32X hence Sega 32X CD games for the "tower of power".

The accuracy they had on the entire product is insanely good. I believe the only thing they messed up a little is the hardware's clockspeed because the SNES Classic Mini internally uses the same stuff (which is why people already succeeded in flashing the MegaDrive Mini image to it) but unlike the MD it runs at its stock 1.4GHz or something whereas this console runs at 1.2. Got to say I don't notice so much of an issue with it but it's strange nontheless. Gotta give them probs for using USB on the controllers tho, makes it a whole lot easier to use these on PCs.

I already have a working Genesis and 32X so I'm happy. I might get a Genesis Mini just for Castlevania Bloodlines, though. Now Sega needs to make with a Saturn Mini.

I had Sega Channel in the Mid 90s and it had Wiley Wars. So Americans could play it if you had It. This Genesis Classic actually reminds me of Sega Channel as Sega Channel had about 50 games you could play on demand. Sega Channel did require you to download a game before you could play it which took about 2-3 minutes. One benefit Sega Channel had over this Micro Genesis was it would give you about five new games a month. The other 45 games stayed the same so it wasn’t an entirely new lineup of games.

Adam, you can use Sonic 1 with Sonic and Knuckles, you have to enter a code, and then it allows you to play any of the special zones. If you enter that code with any other game, it only allowed you to play one specific special zone, but Sonic 1 let you play them all.

I rank the Genesis Mini #2 of the mini consoles just behind the Super NES Mini, but ahead of the NES, and miles ahead of the PS Mini. I’d rather have an AT Games Genesis than a PlayStation Mini.

At this time it's the most thorough and well done of the mini consoles. The fact that they went through so much trouble to do small things like making the slot hinges work, the volume slider move and the expansion slot cover is simply incredible. That's a lot of cost added just to make those extra pieces that basically serve no purpose. The only real issue I have is that the sounds effects are a touch delayed. Upgrade to the sega licensed wireless 6 button controllers by retro-bit and thank me later. I also wish they had included pulseman instead of Wily Wars. I'm a huge Mega Man fan but Wily Wars is not great and I feel like it moves a bit slower. That or I'm crazy. M.U.S.H.A. would have been cool too.

Mega Man: The Wily Wars was released in physical form in Japan & Europe. We did get it here in America but only subscribing to the ill-fated Sega Channel. There is one version of the AtGames portable Genesis that came with Wily Wars. I just love it how people get so misinformed about this particular game.

The only games I’ve gotten into with the Genesis mini so far are _The Wily Wars_ and their version of _Tetris,_ which is quite different from the Nintendo ports because I’m so used to advancing a level after clearing 10 lines instead of whatever rules for advancing speed in the Sega/arcade port Surprisingly, I’ve beaten TWW, up to and including “Wily Tower” a.k.a. “Mega Man: The Lost Levels” exclusive to the Genesis. I don’t think I would’ve gotten nearly as far as I did on a real console, or for that matter, _MM2_ on the NES Classic or _MMX_ on the SNES Classic because save States & suspend points I still have my PlayStation Classic I bought back in July for $20 still in box because I haven’t gotten around to getting a USB stick to hack it with

I love the lineup of games Sega got there for the mini but there are still a few they included which I'm not a fan of like Virtua Fighter 2, Space Harrier II, and Columns. I feel those could had easily be replace with these three: Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Columns III. I also was not a fan of that version of Tetris, the control were not as smooth as both the Tengen and NES version of Tetris and you can't fast stack it the same way as those versions. I do had to admit though, the new version of Darius is awesome.

A very good mini console. I think I still prefer the SNES Classic because while the quantity of games is lower, the quality of the games available is just a bit better.

I would have thought you’d have been among the first KZfaq gaming channels to get one of these. You’ve been seemingly carrying the Sega torch way longer than most. Odd. That aside I already have one. I love it. A quick burst of those Sega memories in genuine SEGA made hardware. I never thought I’d live to see the day. I do find it curious also that SOA has left money on the table by not releasing the tower of power pack & the mini cartridge packs over here. I’d love to have those little cosmetic add-ons for mine. The power of nostalgia is very real. Sega nearly hit a grand slam with this aside from those minor oversights.

and to think I was ready to make the joke 'hey don't you think the megadrive mini accessories might not be compatible with the Genesis mini' and sure enough the cart doesn't work, that's too funny! :P but seems like a really cool unit even though I do have a real one and a handful of games this would definitely be a more convinent solution. great videos as always!

Hey Adam, if you get a SEGA Pico (or Beena), you should do a video on it.

I have the USA version and the ASIAN version to get all the games I like in English. Remember the ASIA region version and the JAPAN version are different versions.

Overall this is the best mini console on the market for sure. But it certainly could have been even better without the inclusion of some mediocre or strange titles. Namely Virtua Fighter 2, Alex Kidd, Sonic Spinball, Eternal Champions, Space Harrier 2 etc. Hey if anyone likes those games you have every right too, but I would have preferred Rocket Knight Adventures, Ristar, Alien Soldier, Mega Turrican or Revenge of Shinobi. There are better games, but I'm very grateful that most of the games are fully deserving classics (Thunder Force, SOR2, Shinobi 3, Shining Force, MWIV, Beyond O, PSIV etc ftw!)

Sonic 1 was compatible with sonic and knuckles as it allowed you to freely play the sonic 3s bonus stages. Also as good as the megadrive mini looks Nintendo has beaten them to it, anyone with a snes mini can download hackchi and get the choice of mega drive games they like, including Atari, gba, etc.

I kinda hope that Sega will do this again, someday. Not with Genesis though because they show that system WAY TOO MUCH love. Great system, but that wasn't the only one they made. Sega Saturn will probably be the toughest one, due to how its design. Maybe a Dreamcast or Master System, down the line. But I really don't see the need for them making the add-ons for the Genesis mini. I mean, the Sega CD was alright if you ignore the shovelware because it definitely had that, but who asked for the 32X to be included?

Wow bro, where the hell did your mom find an Atari 2600 in '93? Don't get me wrong, that was my first system too and I got that a few years into the NES. Trust me, I shared your pain always being the last to get a system. That's the great thing about this hobby, there's always some great games and consoles to experience despite having prior knowledge of them even decades ago.

Ah Ive gushed over this so much on my Twitter and Insta, probably too much, had to get the UK, Japanese and Asia versions. If I had to chose one though it has to be the Asia/HK version, how SEGA could leave the Treasures masterpiece Alien Soldier(Asia exclusive) off the other releases baffles me! And leaving the six button pad outta the PAL version is another reason the SNK/NeoGeo/KOF - CAPCOM/Charger/StreetFighter nerd in me had to import the Asia and Japanese version, really stings when I think back, had to work all summer holidays bean picking back in 93 so I could save and afford the Japanese import, SEGA and CAPCOM did a "pack" back in the day, SF2:CE and 2 six button pads and it cost me £130 back then, still have it! lol And the RetroBit/SEGA pads are FANTASTIC, also a side note the RetroBit/SEGA Saturn pads also work with the MDmini! And your right its bloody fantastic to get SEGA planned and manufactured hardware in 2019, I get the SEGA of 2001 is a very different beast to the SEGA of 2019 but still, super cool! Now we just have to convince SEGA to fire back up that DreamCast manufacture line, the halt to the DC production in 2001 was criminal, such a fantastic console.... anyway going off on a totally unrelated rant, Another great video Adam! Great review Adam, really love your review videos but I'm glad I never got one of these, quite disappointing that they gave the entire west the North American Genesis versions of all the games instead of giving PAL regions the authentic experience in 50Hz (the way the games were originally released over there). Just like the old SEGA Mega Drive Collection on XBox 360 and PS3 where Sega gave PAL regions the North American versions, they even displayed the NTSC Genesis carts for the games in the menu and used the American game title names aswell. Regarding the Mega Drive Mini, SEGA could have at least put an option in the settings to play the games in 50Hz. Not all of us want to play them in 60Hz, it's not memorable to alot of us that grew up in PAL regions. But instead Sega just said ''nope, fuck it, we're gonna give the entire west the Genesis versions and call it a day!'' I'm grateful I opted to get the Analogue Mega SG instead, a Mega Drive clone console manufactured in Seattle Washington USA and it supports PAL 50Hz aswell as NTSC 60Hz the way it should be. Every contingency should be considered when manufacturing these things.

Wouldn’t it be cool if Sega released like a new “retro” console. Something similar to the RetroVGS just not a horrible failure. It would be relatively easy to engineer and produce and if Sega wanted they could get game studios such as Christian white head to make the games
