A self-forgiveness meditation that is gentle and effective. A guided meditation by Jack Kornfield on how to practice self forgiveness. (23 minutes :-)
Repeat to yourself:
“For the ways I have hurt myself through action or inaction, out of fear, pain and confusion, (pause & feel)
I now extend a full and heartfelt forgiveness. (pause & feel)
I forgive myself, (gently)
I forgive myself.”
Respectfully,
G Ross Clark

"When the heart opens in loving-kindness... you fall asleep easily and wake in contentenment. Animals will sense your love and not harm you. And people will welcome you everywhere. If you lose things, they will be returned to you. If you fall a cliff, a tree will always be there to catch you. And the world will become more peaceful around you. And you will bring the blessings of a loving heart to all you touch."

I burst into tears when it came to forgiving myself. The images of the past 2 or 3 years revolved around my mind every time when I was beating myself up for not doing enough or being good enough. That was so powerful and made me realize that the hardest thing for me has been to show kindness to myself. As if there is a self inside me that I have been calling names, bullying, and hurting for way too long. It gives me a new perspective at least.

I think of forgiveness as an oft unacknowledged 5th brahmavihara. Over the last few days I've been making a list of every gripe I can think of- every person who'd ever upset me, any time I've acted immaturely or embarrassingly (self forgiveness is the best antidote to cringe I think!), every time I have hurt myself in some form, and I'm going to meditate on them with forgiveness every day until each memory no longer has that powerful emotional charge.

I feel the bad things we do, or have done, or the bad decisions we have taken, could not have been done differently by the person we were. Nobody takes a bad decision knowing the consequences will be very hard to live with. We do what we do mostly in self-defense and based on our own self-image. A thief is really saying to himself 'I steal because I am a thief'. An abuser is saying to himself 'I abuse because I am an abuser'. People with self-respect and self-love could not imagine stealing or abusing. It would be unimaginable to them. When we don't love ourselves, if we think of ourselves as a thief or an abuser, that is exactly how we will behave. Sadly, that cycle always starts when people are treated badly, or are shown a bad example, when they are very young. Through guilt we force ourselves to live and relive our past. Our past remains our present, and becomes our future. Self forgiveness is the only way of renewing our hearts and minds, giving us the self-respect that makes the idea of behaving badly unimaginable to us. And self- forgiveness is something that only we can give to ourselves. But once we have, we can respect and love the people around us, because our self-image of who we are, is changed. Once we respect ourselves, we are naturally respectful to the people around us. So the more we forgive ourselves, the better we become as people. How simple is that :-) So do something wonderful today and every day. Forgive yourself and become the wonderful person you are, that is, when you and only you realise it.

I'm so sorry. I've never hurt anyone so badly before in my life, and I think about the pain I unknowingly caused you every single day. The fear, the body sensations, the thoughts. I tortured and self harmed thinking I had to inflict on myself what I gave you. Ending it with a rope held so much meaning. But I have to finally let go and move on. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry. Please forgive me. I'm sorry. I forgive you. Thank you. I love you.

I'm going through a rough time where I'm trying to forgive certain people in my life, but also myself, and I can't say I am completely there but this certainly was a great first step! I will continue to do this meditation everyday if I can :) thank you so much. Much love and light your way!

Hi John, Thank you for the insightful comments. Yes, I agree. When we pause and listen to our self-talk it can give us glimpse ’our self-image'. Also I have found that my over self-referencing also causes a lot of unnecessary self-suffering. Respectuflly, G Ross Clark www.mbsrtraining.com/

Jack Kornfield could speak with a little more vitality in his voice. I know he is aiming for non-attachment, but attachment and vitality are two different things. Sounds a little too contrived or unnatural. Let's get some life back in there!
