Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, we test a 2013 Vauxhall (Opel) Mokka 1.4 Exclusiv Turbo 4X4, which has a blue and black interior. Be prepared for much improved driving footage, parking outside a racing track, easy access and egress, a very interesting CD set and very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

My sister bought a white 66 reg Mokka last year. Which I cannot talk about. 😉 I also like the brown interior. The blue on the dashboard is a nice touch - reminiscent of Hyundai i10 Premium spec. The new Stellantis Mokkas are much more stylish. Also available with electric power as the Mokka E (Mockery?). 😁

Yes, the Hyundai i10 did have a blue interior option in the Mark II Premium trim level, didn't it? Thank you for your self-censorship, sir... The new Mokka seems to be one of the new cars these days which is not horrifically ugly, it does look pretty handsome. You are right, the Mokka-e is also available, although when Planetauto had a go last year, they tried a petrol.

An excellent review sir. I was very tempted with the Mokka before settling on the Meriva. The Meriva just offers that little bit more space inside which for me is what I needed. But the Mokka is very nicely thought out.

Yes, the boot is a bit bigger on the Meriva, I think, and the space is just a little bit more inside too, as you say. Mind you, I was pleasantly surprised with this, I didn't have very high expectations at all.

Excellent review as always Sir, Mother in Law has had 3 of these cars on Mobility Scheme and have had no issues with them at all she had the 1.4 Turbo's, I had a shot in one of them after owning a Astra J and it was like a comfy shoe with all the controls in the same place, same steering wheel. She is about to hand her one back for a Peugeot Rifter Mobility car with wheel chair access for my father in law.

Yes, I think these were popular on Motability. Very familiar indeed if someone was used to an Astra J, as you say. Apparently, Terry has had no issues with the 1.4 Turbo in this car, but they aren't unknown, sadly. We know about those Rifters, sir!

I have never heard of a 3 pin socket in car! Amazing! I really did like the video quality. I agree that the interior colours are greatly preferable to the ubiquitous black drabness.

The three pin sockets are relatively common on European cars for some reason... The driving section was immeasurably improved by Mr Bill kindly allowing me to use his camera setup, wasn't it? A blue and brown interior initially sounds disgusting, but it really works!

These were sold until recently as the Buick Encore in the United States and for several years were Buick's top selling model. They are literally everywhere and driven mostly by middle aged women...

@@dominicjackson2498 I saw the same video. It's strange how people's opinion on the same vehicle can be so different because numerous consumer surveys have shown that they are quite reliable and the owners are highly satisfied with them.They also show a high level of repeat buyer's who were obviously satisfied enough with their vehicle to replace it with a comparable one.
@dominicjackson2498
@dominicjackson2498 2 жыл бұрын
@@williamegler8771 I wonder if different US road conditions or driving styles have something to do with it. People thrashing them in warmer climates maybe brings on cooling issues. If the turbo is oil cooled as well then thrashing them and switching them off is very bad as it causes the turbo oil feed pipes to coke up leading to turbo failure and people get the turbo replaced but not the oil feed pipes.

The owner of this car has been a Vauxhall mechanic for over 40 years. He has had it for eight years. I asked him about the turbo issue, and he said that it happened, but it wasn't nearly as common as people say that it is. It didn't feature in the list of common issues that Mike Humble prepared for his review on Parkers either, for some reason.

We have this as the Encore, with I believe a 125 hp of the same engine, FWD and AWD. Have ridden in one and is quite nice! Fuel mileage is less because it only came in a 6 speed automatic. NEVER RECEIVED THE FORBIDDEN FUEL ENGINE. The latest version is the Encore GX with a turbo 3. Very nice review, thank you very much.

Something I really dislike about Vauxhalls, aside from the indicator stalks (certainly of the previous shape Astra/Zaf etc) is why the rev counter and speedometer look identical. Most other manufacturers manage to put a single digit for the revs and double for the speed. If you're changing cars frequently then little things like this are a bit annoying.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Ай бұрын
The indicator stalks on these are fine, it is the ridiculous one touch indicators of the Zafira B and Astra H which are a pain! The double digital values on the rev counter used to be in many French cars as well.

Interesting video review, thank you, I have been interested in the Mokka for quite a while. For all my driving life I always drove manuals, but for the last fifteen years I have driven three automatics, I like them! I'm dismayed at the lack of auto available options to buy in the U.K. I am looking to test drive and hopefully buy a Mokka X Turbo 1.4 petrol auto. I'm located in Hampshire.

If you have a look on the Sensible Secondhand Reviews playlist, then you will find a review of a much later Mokka (a 2018), which could be more appropriate for what you are after. Don't know much about the automatics, I am afraid... There are an awful lot of alternatives to one of these out there as well, of course!

@@HektorBandimar , there are so many different cars in this class that do much the same thing (Suzuki Vitara, SssangYong Tivoli, MG ZS, Suzuki SX4 S-Cross, etc.) that a lot of it comes down to personal preference as to what one ends up choosing. @@HektorBandimar , it's extremely confusing, as there are two completely different unrelated four cylinder turbo engines in the Mokka X. The earlier one (like in this car) is the Family 0 engine, which dates back to the 1990s, although it had been heavily modified by the time it was used in the Mokka X. They can suffer from turbo problems, but this early 2013 car at almost ten years old had been absolutely fine when I tested it in 2022 (I did ask). I don't know about the reliability of the later GM SGE engine, I am afraid.

Think my Astra GTC has the same engine, although my coolant resovoir is in a different place. Probably they rejigged a few bits because your one is a 4x4. Interesting that when they brought out the Astra K it came with a new 150bhp 1.4 turbo. But they carried on making the Astra J in 3 door GTC form till mid 2018 and kept using the older 1.4 turbo (plus some other engines) in that. I've read a few people saying the water pumps can fail on them a bit early but I've had no engine trouble on mine although its quite low mileage. Concerned about the steering wheel deterioration in that Mokka because the wheel looks v,similar to mine. How many miles had your test car done? or could it be a sunlight sort of issue.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
It has done around 70,000 miles, sir! I think that it may well be sun damage. I have had several cars with that whole column set up, and it is the first I have seen like this. You are right, the Family 0 engine in this car was also used in the GTC, they never fitted the SGE engine to the Astra J, only the Astra K (the 150 bhp you mentioned). The Family 0 in fact kept going in the Corsa E until 2019 in various different power outputs. There are issues with the Family 0s, but Terry reports that this one has been very reliable. Thank you for watching, sir!

This looks like quite a well thought through, compact yet spacious family car…and you cant go wrong with a brown interior!…I don’t really understand why they weren’t more popular? I also don’t understand why Vauxhall bothered with the research & development, and probably not insignificant cost associated with the 4 wheel drive system (although it is a nice bonus for a second hand buy). Bit of an odd model name as well!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the four wheel drive platform would have been expensive to engineer, but for people like Terry who tow it is a real boon. The brown interior is surprisingly nice, actually. These were very popular, but because it is a Vauxhall, they just were not very desirable in comparison to the so called "premium" brands people seem to prefer over here. Still not sure about that model name!

Just bought a 1.6 petrol mokka se the power is a bit lacking coming from a 1.0 focus but thats because its non turbo have to rev it out more and heavier car but after being bit by that unreliable engine im done with small turbo engines the 1.4 turbo sounds like its not much better than the ecoboost with many common faults and chocolate 6 speed gearbox. Had coolant leak fixed on the focus then a few months later the timing belt in oil has most likely blocked the oil pickup causing oil light despite being full of oil I thought sod it not wasting 1k+ to fix that shit car only to break down again in 6 months so bought a new car again instead. It got the oil light whilst on holiday so luckily have aa cover they gave us a hire car as they kept delaying the recovery so left the car with the keys parked up and they took 2 days to tow it back on a relay between counties

Yes, I have heard about problems with the 1.0 Ecoboom engines in a Ford Focus, sadly. The 1.6 Family I engine in the Mokka has its roots in the 1980s, but they were made until around 2017 for our market. You have to keep on top of the cambelt changes with these, and they can blow thermostat housings, but they are much simpler than the modern small capacity turbo engines such as the Volkswagen 1.0 TSI.

@@sbrader97 , yes, I would get the cambelt done as soon as possible if you can, as the water pump is also the cambelt tensioner on that Family I engine. If that goes, then you can get head gasket failure, which is not too good.
