Really nice job with important details in assembling the parts and taking the time to use proper sealing techniques. I especially appreciate putting this together in digestable portions. Also appreciate being candid about being a homeowner level (very skilled) and approaching it from that perspective.

Installed a 9k btu Senville MS last week. I found it time consuming but straightforward if you have the right tools and don’t skip important steps. Always do a nitrogen pressure test! This insures that you have no leaks BEFORE vacuuming the lines down. Then, always use a micron gauge when you vacuum down and make sure there’s no significant rise when you isolate the lines. Wait at least 30 minutes to evaluate full vacuum for leaks. Finally, research and get the required equipment. A 4-way charging/test gauge set is not enough. You will need a micron gauge, Schrader core removal tools with cutoffs, a nitrogen tank, leak detection soap, and enough knowledge to know the steps of installation that will keep your line set air and water vapor free when vacuuming and releasing the refrigerant charge. The primary killer of MS systems is air/water in the refrigerant loop.

Very nice you made it clear that your warranty is going to be voided by installing yourself! This is what is stopping me for now. I am considering installing "Mr. Cool" mini-spit because they have a DIY unit that allows people to install the unit. My other dilemma is the excess length of the line-set. I don't want the extra coiled-up line-set showing in-view. Thanks for the vlog.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
The Mrcool is about the same unit. I am not sure I would set that unit up without vacuuming the lines. I think most installers would vacuum the lines on the mr cool even though it is not needed. Manufacturer said it is better for the unit to leave the extra line because the unit is set for 16' lineset. Added pressure over time can hurt the compressor. Thanks for your comment.

Great video. Thanks for the detail. Did this get approved by the Electrical Inspector? The NEC forbids using a "white" conductor (and coloring it black or wrapping in electrical tape) for any wire under 8 AWG. It must be colored other than white or green. Also the sheathing must be removed where the wires enter the box. Your Inspector must be really loose with the NEC. This can be accomplished by using 12/3 wire and cutting back the white wire OR using individual conductors but you will need EMT (Blue "Smurf tube" conduit) Also remember, the breaker's purpose is to protect the wire and trip before the amperage goes too high, melting the wire coating and causing a fire. It is up to the installer to check the Max Amps used by the unit and install the correct breaker/wire size. In other words, basically the breakers and wire size (AWG) are matched. 15 amp breaker is for 14 AWG, 20 amp breaker is for 12 AWG, 30 Amp breaker is for a 10 AWG wire. There are several exceptions (voltage loss, etc) but for general household wiring, breaker size is matched to wire size. I always up-size my wire/breakers. Also, make sure you tighten the breaker screw in the panel or the lug screw in the box to proper specifications. Many of us do not use a torque wrench when we should. The torque needs to be very tight to prevent moving of the wire, causing sparks which causes.....you guessed it...FIRE. As mentioned before, circuit breakers often "go bad" You should "ALWAYS" double check the circuit with a meter before working on it.

I was also curious about that too. Is not necessary at all. Once a cable is connected to the breaker terminal, rainbow colors on it, it's hot!

I got confused on the video on the electrical on the outside he never told the size of wire he used from the disconnect switch to compressor. Correct me if I'm wrong the size of wire should be the same 12-2 from breaker to disconnect, 12-2 from disconnect to compressor.

In PA there are no codes permitting the install. I think many people do the install themselves and hire an hvac tech to charge the system. The refrigerant is already in the system, so it is pretty cheap when you pay for the service.

Important Note: Many areas are now requiring these units to be installed on the building and it is against code to install on a slab. My local code calls for the unit to be a minimum of 8 inches off the ground.

Man buddy I'M not sure i would want to lose my warranty I guess it depends on long the warranty is and how much the install would cost. I could the electric part no problem its some of the other stuff I might difficulty with my carpentry skills are the greatest. Looking forward to the series Bob because I'M trying to figure out what to do in the next year with my company I'M either going to have to go rent a commercial space somewhere or I could build a detached garage here for my company but I'M going to have to do something i'm running out of space. LOL Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. God Bless!!!

The warranty is a year and I think 5 years on the compressor. The whole outdoor unit can be bought for less than $500 delivered. There is not much carpentry except drilling a hold through the wall, the rest I would consider hvac work? What is your business? I think you mean to say "detached garage" never heard of unattached;}
@nashguy207
@nashguy207 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I meant to say detached garage LOL I went back and corrected my typo I was tired at the time i guess. Well if its only a year and 5 years and the cost is only that then I would do it myself I own a full service landscaping company we Mowing,Turf care, all plant work design layout and planting and maintenance of plants Irrigation install and maintenance and Low voltage landscape lighting install and maintenance. That's where my small engine stuff comes into play I try to do all the work on equipment I can I have 2 great supervisors that have been with me for 8 to 10 years they run the crews out in the field and I'M able to do all paper work and payroll and work on equipment that way I have always like tinkering one engines and stuff used to cars the I raced R/C boats for several years and did all my own engine work and modifications doing that I started tinkering on lawn mowers when I was about 8 years of age or so so everyone tells me. LOL

You didn't need to cut that v in the cover over the electrical wire because the wire should have come in from the bottom. there's two screws that hold a strap in place you remove those two screws and the strap and bring your wire in from the bottom. Bend that wire 90° up and put that strap over the wire and secure it with the two screws.

110 is ok if you need a small unit. They work. However he got an 18k btu I believe and that is too large to have a 110 model. Only the small units like 9k btu or maybe a 12k btu you can have a choice to get 110. Just make sure that the circuit is only running the unit. If there is a light or something else like that it's fine but too much load will blow breakers and hurt the unit

This is 220v so you would not be able to just plug it in. However this brand makes a 12k btu that is 110v. Technically you could put a whip on it and plug it in. I would make sure that you do not have a lot on that circuit. They draw quite a bit when starting up. Much like a window unit or a microwave.. you just do not want to overload the circuit

Well if you look at the amperage it's pretty low for the 18,000 BTU, 20 amps is correct with 12 gauge wiring. This spec sheet comes from their site. Good video, however, for your size Garage a 12,000 BTU size Mini Split would have been a better choice than a 18,000 BTU (you said 1800 in the video BTW) and with the money you saved you could have bought the better Senville Aura series model. It has a much higher Seer rating and is WIFI compatible. The 18,000 BTU Mini Split will cool your size Garage more quickly but will turn on and off more times than a 12,000 BTU model will and remove less humidity and give you higher energy bills.

So for a 24000 btu I can use a 12/2 wire?
@davidjames7323
@davidjames7323 5 жыл бұрын
You can but not recommended. 12guage allows for a 30 amp circuit breaker. The two will bring up your two hots (220v) and ground (must rebrand the white white to black with tape or marker) to the ac disconnect. It just means you will not have a dedicated neutral. They want you to have a neutral but at the end of the day the neutral and ground are bonded at the ac disconnect anyway. Up to you I went a head and went with 12/3 just to cover all the bases.

It's a shame the warranty is voided just because you don't have an HVAC license. Is there any chance you could find someone with a license who would be willing to inspect and sign off on your work? It seems it would be an easy $100 or so for someone. Thanks Bob.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
You need someone that owns their own company to sign off. From what I understand these units are designed to run well for 10 years. I don't want to lose the warranty, but sometimes it is hard to have your cake and eat it.

Nice video! However, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD REPLACE THAT 14 GA CABLE WITH 12 GA RATED FOR 20 AMPS! I might add that any wet or outside location requires UH rated cable as well. Even if in a water proof conduit per NEC.

Just be careful when working with electrical and refrigerant. Refrigerant burns can hurt. I install lots of mitsubishi and daiken. I'm licensed. Coworkers get upset when they hear of homeowners trying to install these themselves... but personally I don't care what you do.. there's plenty of work. I do want to hear some reviews on this system if anyone has it? May install an 18k at my house to replace an older 12k hyperheat.

Where is the neutral wire???? Shouldn't it be 3 wire...Black (hot)...Red (hot) ...White (Neutral) and Green (Ground)?????

I think the red and white (Both hot)on a 240 volt circuit balance the load because they are out of phase with each other.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, by code where I live you can use the neutral as a hot and use 12/2 wire. You could wire with 12/3 but you would have an extra neutral wire that would tie onto the ground lug on the A/C disconnect. There is no need for the extra neutral. I would only need 12/3 if I were wiring 240V and the A/C unit required 2 hots and a neutral.

18000 btu can give you a mold/moisture problem! You should be using 12000 btu for that size. Plus with 12000 btu you could've gotten 120 volt making the wiring much easier.
