Professor Dave Explains

When we perform a chemical reaction, we are usually trying to get a particular molecule. But when we are done with the reaction, there will probably be a bunch of different stuff in the reaction flask. How do we get just the thing we want and not the other stuff? It's actually pretty involved, with a couple different steps, but the first of these will always be extraction using a separatory funnel. Let's learn how to do this!

This is exactly what we do at my job to analyze water samples for oil and gas. I work for my state's environmental quality department so this is very relevant.

If only I had seen your video sooner! I made so many mistakes during that lab because the paragraph-style instructions were not very helpful🥲 I had no idea how to vent when the text asked me to or why we were adding all the chemicals and solvents for. Omg this brings back bad memories. I remember in OG Chem I poured out all the liquid by accident🙃. I still remember my partner begin really upset even tho i ask them to where and they said all of it and by all of it they meant the aqueous layer. Hahah fun times 😅

Hi, I have a question about extraction, if you could help. How would we go about seperatign alcohol and carboxylic acid. More specifically, I am talking about napthol and terphthalic acid. I just don't understand this becuase every video I watch always seperates one acidic, one basic, and one neutral compound.

always check the density! solvent like DCM will be at the bottom.

In an OC lab course the lab assistant provided a good life hack: if you're unsure which layer is which, just draw a line with a marker where both layers meet. Add a little water: if the level of the seperating line remains in line with your marking, then water is the upper layer. If it is raised, water is at the bottom
