... Thanks for the history lesson. Really enjoyed it. Always wondered how the shad dart design started, why it was shaped that way and how it became to be what it is today. . Since I have gotten more into blue cats fishing and watching YT videos, seeing the skipjack herring caught on the Tennessee river for catfish bait, they are very similar to the Hickory shad in our waters and also caught with an erratic retrieve. While we must release the hickories, the skipjacks are highly favored for cut bait down there. Looks like and called, "Poor mans tarpon." They can jump like a tarpon also. The skips on the Tennessee river chain really don't care what the shape of lead head is. Jigs with hair, curly tails, etc. and small flashy spoons that trigger a reaction strike is all that is needed. . Thanks again Shawn. Jeff .

Delaware river shad. Darts and flutter spoons. The run is coming, some fish in the river. Shad bush also called shadblow or serviceberry. Whole story behind those names. Supposedly makes the best jelly. Maybe this is the year that I catch a shad on the flyrod. So much to learn and do.

Fascinating story, Shawn! I’ve heard shad are terrible eating - what were they harvested for?

American shad are delicious. Their scientific name means “very tasty.” You can find it sometimes in Maryland since Virginia allows a bycatch fishery.

Great chat .Cut my 66 year old teeth in the mid to late 1960s on the Susquehanna River below Conowingo. I remember elbow to elbow anglers from the dam to almost Lapidum. They used to have a derby. Then the bottom dropped out until the 90s. Pretty good rebound but not like the glory days. Caught many on darts then plastics on jigs. Rough Riders work good in the eddy at Deer Creek. Haven't been in a few years. Overall the restoration project has been a failure. I believe its a down stream problem as well. Commercial fishing and pollution. Herring rins gone as well. And those little fish can't remember there name.

Would love to have been there. I fished Deer Creek in 2006. It was good fishing and shoulder to shoulder then. Not the glory days though.

I know as a MD recreation fisherman that shad are C&R only. I was in a MD grocery store in Carroll County and they were selling fresh Shad. I couldn't beleive it. I was wondering if you knew where they could have came from? I didn't think they were commercially harvested.
