Shadowrun on the Genesis is still my favorite game of all time. After all these years I will still start it up and walk the shadows. It was also my biggest inspiration for getting into game development.

An all-time classic. One of the few games my mom and I liked enough to buy it brand new. We played it dozens of times, and I still have it.

I'm definitely a Super Nintendo guy, but the Genesis version of Shadowrun is where it's at. And the point about the sound card is well-taken - the Genesis sound card was obviously more limited than the SNES sound card, but it really lent it self well to the grungy, cyberpunk feel of this game. Combined with the superior play control and the fact that the game's bread and butter - the Matrix - was exponentially better, it's a pretty easy call for me. SNES version is very good, but the Genesis version is one of the best RPG's on the system.

I love the way this game kind of kicks your ego in the balls in the beginning. "Oh you want me to deliver a package? F that I'm going to go fight some ghouls.." die, reload, put on Fed Ex uniform "hello Mr.Johnson, where would you like me to take this package?"

This is a channel that truly deserves more subs, it's genuinely impressive how consistently good your content is. I had no idea the Mega Drive version was completely different, looks like a fun one to check out

I absolutely LOVE the Genesis version of this game. I blew many hours on this game in the mid-90’s and I just played it again YESTERDAY on my AtGames Sega Genesis Flashback (2018 version). One of my absolute all time favorite video games! 👍🏻👍🏻

This was my first video game RPG. I played it every spare moment I had until I finally beat it. I also still remember just being in awe of the ability to save your game.

I used to play this on the Sega Channel as a kid. I was all about anything VR related so I loved the hacking sequences, nevermind the fact that I never had a single idea what I was doing in it.

Been a while! I watch this video probably twice a year when feeling nostalgic lol! In my 40s now but I remember picking up Shadowrun one Friday night when I was at the mall with friends back in 94 or 95. Played it over and over. Great game and great video!

Even in 2022 I still love this game so much, Shadow Run on the Gensis is up there with Phantasy Star 4 for me.

This is the one game where I can sit at my computer all day while playing as a character that's standing at a public terminal all day...

I love seeing how the Genesis was able to top the SNES every once in a while. It didn't have Mode 7 or Super FX cartridges, but was capable of very impressive special effects.

It's funny how excited you are explaining the story for this version.

This is the game that got me into RPGs. The massive world, unique esthetics for that time, etc just roped me in

SNES/Genesis ports = like night and day, often worth trying both PS4/Xbox One ports = 99% the same yet fanboys will debate the minuscule details to death

Both the SNES and Sega Genesis games were my introduction to Shadowrun, and although I never got to actually play the tabletop RPG despite actually owning a few of the books, I love the lore and the setting. While I appreciated the SNES version's overall story and characters, I've always been more attached to the Sega Genesis version because of its easier gameplay (and the Matrix was just more fun), not to mention you can really feel the difference in power as you increase your abilities/purchase better gear and cyberware. My only regret is that I spent more money constantly renting both games than I could have spent just buying them outright... >.> I gotta say, though, that the Shadowrun Returns line of games has become my new go-to for cyberpunk greatness (even if I still occasionally end up going back to the older games). The remixes of songs from the older games, coupled with a cameo from Jake Armitage in Shadow Returns, were just amazing homages to these old gems of the early-to-mid 90s. :) Thanks for the vid, SNESDrunk!

The SNES Shadowrun would sometimes softlock if you miss an "ask about" prompt, gating you off entirely from progression. I remember distinctly missing an NPC that had "vampires" as an ask prompt and I was shut out at about the 3/4s mark and had to start over.

I agree with your point on the soundtrack being more dark and menacing and I'd agree on that for a good majority of genesis games in comparison with snes. Something about the sound system for genesis just sounds amazing. There's quite a few games that I love comparing musically and depending on the genre, the genesis comes out on top. AWesome video. Your content is awesome. What's funny about the Shadowrun games is the Sega CD version that was only released in Japan is an entirely different game as well. Really hope we get an English translation of it at some point

The slow down in combat is based on your intelligence stat. If you get it high enough you can move at normal speed or even fast enough to run from combat before it begins.

The Genesis version of Shadowrun broke a lot of ground at the time, was very in depth & got very little recognition for it. You could save your game, it was open world, non-linear & had a completely customizable skill tree, which was all either completely or nearly unheard of at the time. Hacking the Matrix wasn't just for stealing/selling information. You could also shut down a company's security measures & unlock doors/safes, so that raiding their building was much easier. Don't have the skills to do it? Hire a "cyberdecker" (hacker) & use them to do it. Wanna learn to do it yourself? Just stack skill points in the right areas & eventually you can, even if you're the wrong class. Security still too tight for you? Hire a team of Shadowrunners & gun them all down. Wanna be better with a shotgun? Automatic? Pistol? Stack your skill points. Wanna learn magic? Stack your skill points. This was all in 1994, when the biggest games were simple side-scrollers, fighting games & shooters.

Oh man this takes me back! Loved this game and spent so many hours playing it. I played tabletop d&d around that time so I had no problem with all the text. My only complaint was the game wasn’t 10x the size it was. Would love to see an updated version on PlayStation 4/5

This game and DUNGEONS and DRAGONS Warriors of the eternal Sun are by far my favorite 16bit games of all time, followed by the Phantasy Star..

One of my favorite games. I truly have no idea how many hours I have spent in my various playthroughs of this. I do know, I'll end up getting the urge, and play it again. It's also the reason why I had to pick up the various Shadowrun games on Steam.

I wish modern Shadowrun games followed the cues of this Genesis game, this is one of my favorite games of all time. Running corps and hacking through the matrix, upgrading your character with implants. Huge miss that they didn't continue with this theme vs. the boring turn based style that new games have.

I want the Shadowrun on Sega CD to be translated already.

Loved this game so much when I was a kid. Even though I barely ever made it more than a fifth of the way through the game. I really should give it another try for nostalgia's sake.

Yeah I like them both but I prefer the Genesis game. One thing I like about the Genesis game that you didn't mention is that it requires much less grinding for money to upgrade equipment despite needing to buy ammo clips in the Genesis game and having unlimited ammo on the SNES. I'm still upset that the Sega CD game never came out in the US though.

I got the Genesis version at a store when I was ten, it was on sale for like $4 or something and my mom bought it for me (great parenting) prob just as a cheep way to keep me busy - This game scared the shit out of me then... and to be honest it still does now The ambient music, the sunset/night punk colors, the slow chases, the art, goddamn this game was a masterpiece (I also have fond memories of Light Crusader) Genesis Games are something of a oddity to me, while some (like Sonic) give off this bright vibrant world, also so many of them give off this simplistic gritty ambiance with their colors/sound that to this day gives me anxiety and a rush, like a AAA horror game ever could (Resident Evil franchise has been doing a pretty good job lately though*)

The game's totally hardcore.Probably the best game to play during lockdown. Edit: The game becomes so easy when you buy max power heavy pistol and increase quickness for one time.

I did enjoy this on the Genisis (that's all I had back then). But it was my first introduction to the world of Shadowrun. I'm playing Shadowrun Return and Hong Kong for the first time as well. I cannot wait for Cyberpunk 2077 as I've been a fan of movies like Blade Runner, Ghost in a Shell and Deus Ex (2000) which draws inspiration from.

it took 24 years, but i finally beat shadowrun (genesis) legit without the cheat code. it's flawed, and feels incomplete, but it was ahead of it's time and it's still one of my favorites of all time

Great review! I own both versions of the game and have to say I've played the Genesis version more. I must admit I haven't completed either game, but got much further into the Genesis one. The SNES one seems pretty good too, but I got put off by the awkward controls. I love how open the world is in Genesis game.

Great review, I've been a huge fan of the SNES game from childhood, but I picked up the Genesis version a year ago and haven't touched it yet. I need to fix that. The world and the lore is great for people looking to scratch that cyberpunk itch. Also anybody remotely interested in this should probably also just go read Snow Crash.

I got the Snes version originally and played it and loved it so when I seen this version I was initially put off and did not investigate further. Your video has shown me I perhaps was to hasty and might give this one a second look.

I've actually played and completed both versions. The story in the snes version is a little better, but the gameplay and visuals are better on the genesis. Personally I prefer the genesis version just because it's closer to the pen and paper version of shadowrun.

just watched this again and man, the snes is like playing a game about shadow run, the genesis game is like you're playing shadow run.

I'm playing Shadowrun Dragonfall directors cut. It's pretty good too. I just loved playing the genesis version when I was a kid. I still play it sometimes.

Shaman with a headjack lets you everything the game, takes a bit but eventually your decking is good enough, and selling the data files is the biggest time synch but best cash maker bar none. Also the Redmond barrens is the best place to get karma, the missions are so short that even though its 1 Karma a run you can do 5 in the time the hardcore missions take. Favourite soundtrack ever btw

If I remember correctly, the SNES version is the same as the DOS version. It makes a lot more sense with a mouse.

And don't forget 'abbacab' to deck you out with tones of Nuyen that you absolutely have to have if you play decker, because your cyberdeck is massively expensive. You can also help load yourself up with karma from the get-go and that really helps because your stats are horrible when you start and you'll fail missions a lot.

All time favorite game

As a longtime fan of the SNES game, I feel like it should be over-emphasized that the Genesis game should *not* be brushed aside so easily. I think there are a lot of SNES fans like myself who quit too early. I gave the Genesis version brief attention long ago, wasn't immediately interested, and only recently corrected my mistake. The Genesis version is a great game to give a second chance when you find the right motivation. You hardly mentioned the money balance in this game though! To me, this was the most noteworthy area of analysis, and the early game fetch quests needed to get off the ground isn't quite characteristic of the problem later on (even though the starter missions get more attention in discussions). Money grinding rises to a real design problem towards the late game; the cost for cyberware, matrix programs and other advanced gear is too expensive even after setting aside multiple hours to grind Matrix jobs in the most efficient manner possible. There's a built in cheat code to give yourself money and judicious use of this code during the mid/late-game makes playing the game far more enjoyable. I'd strongly encourage new players not to fuss about cheating once recompleting those same Matrix jobs starts to feel like work. I'm grateful another fan gave me this advice when I started out!

My favorite Genesis game!

I've always liked both versions, but the Genesis game is head and shoulders above the other in my opinion. The gameplay's a lot better, the Matrix is actually an appreciable chunk of the game, you can do actual runs and the game introduced me to A LOT more of the Shadowrun world and lore, something the SNES version has a lot less of (though Maria Mercurial can be spotted in a club and you actually fight a dragon). The SNES versions story is a bit better, though.

this video may inspire me to play another attempt at shadowrun, this time as a gator shaman. that'll be the key to beating this one. was watching your other nintendo drunk on power video and seen populace, was wondering if you think it's worth playing today, if you don't already have a review of it.

I haven't had the chance to play the Genesis version, but I'd definitely like to at some point, of course depending on if I can find the game for the right price.

It's like a 16bit version of cyberpunk 2077. And I really appreciate the fantasy aspects being low-key, im here for the cyberpunk stuff

The karma system is pretty frustrating, but other than that it is a legendary game.

I thoroughly enjoyed both games and celebrate their differences. The SNES story is a little more focused, but the settings just look so much better (and I enjoyed it's music more) while the genesis version supplies a vastly more open-ended experience, but the top-down graphics were always a killjoy to me The SNES version let you hire other runners too... some of which had an annoying tendency to leave your party when you needed them most.

in the snes version, in the matrix segments. you can progress the game up until more than the half of the story without using your capacity to actually destroy those invisible IC-s...

Awe snap! I prefer this version over the SNES game. And you said everything I was going to say about the game, so I literally have nothing else to add.

My top 3 games would include Shadowrun sega Gun Smoke nes and Basins Black Bass snes 🎉that variety of games keeps me busy 😎and if I’m in the mood N64 Harvest moon lol

I liked the SNES version more. I'm just a big fanboy of Jake Armitage. Also the story, characters, exploration and overall atmosphere were better in that game, it just oozed so much style. This game is still a lot of fun though, RPG elements and combat are better here.

The rebirth of the series on pc is also cool, but could have that real time gameplay( something in the veins of Deadnation/alienation combat)
