Shane, this was a fantastic video. I love your head-to-head comparison vs. other motion sensors using different transmission protocols (e.g., Zigbee and BlueTooth). Your use of slow motion video playback made it crystal clear that Thread and Zigbee are nearly indistinguishable from one another regarding transmission speed. Given the mesh (or mesh-like) operability for Thread (giving us self healing performance when part of the Thread network has gone offline for one reason or another), opting for this Thread device over a ZigBee motion detector is an easy choice. Knowing that bother ZigBee devices also require a hub from their respective manufacturer whereas the this Eve Thread motion sensor does not, makes this a great purchase for those with a smaller SmartHome who do not yet have other devices from Aqara and/or Phillips. Finally, I am an Aqara user and their motion sensors work great. One plus on the Aqara sensor is the simplicity of adding the sensor virtually anywhere with their reusable sticky pad. What are the mounting options for the Eve sensor? As always, thanks for the great video Shane.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and kind words Dr. Cole. Mounting options out of the box include sitting the sensor on a surface or wall mounting with a nail or screw using the hole on the back. No 3m sticky pads included but you could easily use some command strips if that is your preferred method.

Thanks for watching! Both the performance and range of Thread is supposed to be about the same as Zigbee. Of course, this will depend on your Thread or Zigbee mesh networks and what devices you have in them. Just like Zigbee, Thread networks can be extended with certain Thread products, as briefly mentioned in the video.

I’m not sure of the price of the eve but if you use Lutron switches the Lutron sensor is another great option and always I only have issues with Lutron when I need an update. Everything needs thread, all my thread devices fix themselves when the internet goes out or resets. Everything else needs unplugged. Except my august locks, somehow they have been flawless, knock on wood. Also eve needs to add thread or update their power strips to use thread. Whenever I’m having issues I need to unplug them and there all in tight spots.

Hey David, thanks so much for the kind words and for watching. This is a good question. Of course, only time will truly tell, as this is the first thread based motion sensor and I don't recall Eve stating any "estimated battery life" numbers. I would hope to get a least a year. I've been using these for weeks and they have been good. But this week my Internet provider replaced my network modem/wifi device, and this has caused problems. Firstly, in order to reset the Eve Motion (Thread version) you need a special tool that I don't have at home. And then after I reset it, and re-added it to the Home app, there were duplicate copies of my sensors in each room. And then, the automatons had to be deleted and recreated. And even after all this, the new automations are not working, and I'm still trying to figure out why. I'm sure I'll figure it all out eventually, but why should any product be this complex to reload? There's no mention in the manual of the reset switch, there's no label on the reset switch, and there's no tool in the box to use to press the reset switch. The product designers probably never considered an average person having to fix problems with this device.

Can the setting used to determine how long the sensor detects motion be used to automatically turn off lights? I’ve tried using Philips Hue motion sensor but lights would turn off within seconds when I was looking for a way to turn them off after 15 minutes. I could do it within the Philips app, but I couldn’t find a way to do it with Home app. I prefer to have hub-less IoT devices so I’d be interested in getting one of these new Eve sensors to put in various hallways where the lights tend to never get turned off.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
If using motion to turn the light on, you can use "turn off after 15 minutes" when setting up the automation. Otherwise, yes, you can have an automation to run when the sensor "stops detecting motion." And the duration setting determines how long that is after motion has ceased.

Nice video Shane. But if you have security system which is based on Aqara products how can you integrate a thread eve motion sensor to that?

Unfortunately you cannot use any other brands' sensors to trigger the Aqara security system, because that configuration must be done in the manufacturer's app. That's pretty much how all security systems work in homekit currently. As you showed both thread and zigbee have the same speed. The echo and smartthings hub already have a zigbee radio in them. Apple and google could just add one to their devices. Sadly, I think that most people will just continue to purchase wifi devices since that is where the market is currently focused. After experiencing Sylvania and smart dry terminating their cloud support I'm done with wifi devices and only buying devices that work locally like zigby, zwave or thread.
