Let's take a look at two B550 ITX boards- the Gigabyte B550 ITX and the Asus B550 ITX. The Ryzen 7 5800X gives us an idea of the performance differences between the two boards, but in my opinion, differences beyond CPU performance are a bit more meaningful for SFF builders. Which one of these is best for your Mini ITX build?

1 thing I found out about the Gigabyte board (only after I bought it - and is NEVER discussed on any of these reviews or builds) is that it is plagued with both Bluetooth connectivity issues, and USB glitching. I have tried numerous online solutions to fix these but they are still intermittent and highly annoying. Also the RGB via Gigabytes software is also glitchy and has issues syncing. Love the content but I wish more reviewers would talk about this.

After having just built new systems with both of these boards, 100% agree with what you have said! If you could mash together features of these boards the result would be about perfect! One difference in the BIOS of these boards that stood out to me was ease of setting up custom fan curves. The Asus board requires mouse input to adjust the curve points, whereas the Gigabyte allows only the use of keyboard which really improves the ease of use. Where the Asus wins though is being able to set any fan header as a WPUMP header, as the Gigabyte only has a "100% PWM" setting instead and no dedicated WPUMP header.

The lack of USB-C front header port in the Gigabyte is a shame. We always recommend the Gigabyte except if the case has a ubs-c front, which in that case, the Asus is the go-to mobo. Really nice comparison, nonetheless.

I tried both, stayed with the Asus. Main factor for me was the internal USB-C header. I started out with an NZXT H1 and then a Darkflash DLH21 case, both of which had front USB-C ports. I now am settled on the CM NR200 so no need for the USB-C, but I don't regret getting the Asus Strix. It's been all good so far. I'm not sure why the Bios Flashback didn't work for you, but I did flash the BIOS on both boards without CPU installed with no problems.

Great comparison and I agree with all of your points. I was debating between these two but ultimately went with the strix as it would let me use all the front IO in the NCase M1 and allow me to fit a Noctua C14S. It does feel flimsy and cheap and sometimes I wonder if I should have paid the extra $40 for the X570 Strix. But then I read all the reddit posts complaining about the loud chipset fan and feel glad that I didn't. The B550 has been running a 5900X just fine and I haven't heard the VRM fan spin up yet, probably because the C14S is cooling the socket as well. I will say that I have also heard of connectivity issues with the Gigabyte board, with many users claiming bluetooth disconnecting often.

Nice comparison and great production quality. I actually own both boards and both have some pros and cons. As you said the the Gigabyte feels sturdier and I like it is completely passively cooled, however I also think the Asus feels like a quality product. I much prefer the board layout and placement of fan headers on the Asus. It’s simply more practical and thought through. I’m a bit of an audio nerd, so I appreciate that the Asus has a separate audio-usb out. UI wise I prefer the Gigabyte’s Bios but the Asus control software is definitely better than Gigabyte’s EasyTune (had trouble getting it to work at all). At the end of the day, I think you can’t go wrong with either one and both are fun to build with.

My B550i Aorus has been returned. From the moment I set it up I had issue after issue. Constant usb issues despite reinstalling drivers and even fresh install of windows. Ridiculously high cpu temps 60°c idle in windows to over 90°c when gaming using the wraith that came with my 3600 (this combo worked perfectly on my B450 Mortar Max). The final nail in the coffin for me was the case fans randomly ramping up to 100% speed despite custom fan curves this also happened in the bios. I now have the ASUS on order.

Thanks for the great video! I had the exact opposite experience with updating the BIOS. The Gigabyte's Qflash Plus would not update. I tried 5 different usb drives and even had it replaced by Amazon. Couldn't get it to work. Asus Strix Flashback update worked first time. There are quite some people on reddit complaining regarding Gigabyte's Qflash (but I imagine same for Asus update). Also, additional reason to buy the Strix board is because it allows slightly larger CPU cooling fan in the NR200p (with glas panel) and optional usb-c frontheader, if I ever decide to upgrade the case.

Very good video as always ! But I think you may have made a mistake at 10:04 about the NVMe slot on the Gigabyte. There are actually 2 screws before getting access to the M.2. One for the heatsink and one standoff under that same screw, which is on the mouting hole where the screw goes. So you put the M.2 at the lowest point, then you screw the standoff, then the heatsink, the the screw for the heatsink and the big metal thing goes perfectly well, at least in my case it all fits good !

So sad that your review does not come out before I had to make a decision. I bought the Gigabyte one, after quite a bit of research online. The main reason for the decision is the price point. Although not significant, the gigabyte one is about £40 cheaper here and my 3600 + NR 200 build doesn`t seem to need a super fancy board. I am overall happy about the board but also have some comments in addition to your great review. 1. I am the poor guy who changes the cpu cooler and the CPU cooler header is a pain. 2. the third mini cooler header is such a bad design. When I tried to pull the fan cable from the mini connecting cable, the cable was accidentally pulled out from the mini header. Then I realize it is almost impossible to put the damn connecting cable back to the mini header by finger or anything else because the GPU, the useless metal chunk above the m.2 leaves no space in between. 3. Finally, I used an MSI x570 previously and see reviews about Asus, the Gigabyte is definitely behind the two - despite the overclocking settings, the fan management is simply not as good. In smart mode, you cannot manage the changing point as you wish. i.e. if you had A point at 30C 20% and C point at 70C 100%, you cannot simply set the B as 50 between 20%-100%. It will force you to point at a slash between A and C, which I simply couldn't understand. As for the manual mode, I can set the fan run at any set percentage but it will run in full at 100% above 70C anyway and it is not adjustable. As a result, the fan will on and off when I got the original AMD cooler. Overall, the built quality of the board is worth its price and it does run nicely. I think it fits people who build a system and use it for a long period of time instead of those who are interested in changing components for testing or whatever reason because any changes on the board almost require a full disassembling and reassembling, and for ITX, it will be some extra difficulties (and pain).

I love my Gigabyte B550 ITX. Buildzoid approved and was also the cheapest ITX board at the time. It marries with the NR200 perfectly since there isn't any front USB type C. Nice informative video for an otherwise rarely covered topic - motherboards. Would be better to actually show top case fan compatibility with some mainstream coolers on the NR200/NR200P since its such a popular ITX case, and you have it on the channel as well(or at least share a link if its done before) for both the boards. Also the Asus's WiFi antenna is magnetic too, at the flat surface of the actual antenna, instead of the base where the antenna fits into. At first I was thinking if this would cause interference and degrade the WiFi experience, but so far so good. I don't notice any difference on the WiFi speed and strength on my B460-i Strix.
@MachinesMore

Thanks for the review! Nice thing about waiting a bit are the comments from users and frustrations with the 550 chip set. I chose the Gigabyte 550 and stuffed this inside the InWin Chopin with a now very cheap 5600G with stock cooler. The case does not have front panel type C. Initially had intermittent bluetooth, but all now flawless after Win 11 finished all the updates. I run HWinFo to check for any m.2 heating, normally sits at 32C, but have seen 46C when long term gaming. The heavy top block installed to assist with cooling the 550 chipset with the FANLESS heatpipe, love it! The manual is a bit weak, but suggest you get help if you need to disconnect or replace the MB battery. Really? Before case installation, all was pretested with and without old GTX 970. I would go with either board depending on case and usage. Mine is for small quiet HTPC.

Out of curiosity, how much does the extra height of the Gigabyte B550I socket affect the maximum height for air coolers in the NR200P case, particularly for the tempered glass panel? Any specific coolers you could recommend that would fit the tighter clearance? Also, thanks for doing these videos; they’ve been really helpful for planning my future build.

Sure thing- what I meant was the socket was close towards the edge of the board, thickness isn’t much of a difference between the two. The consideration is more for top fans or cabling, there’s more room towards the edge of the board with the Asus.

It would be better provided you’re not transferring the rest of your board heat to it, for the most part I think it could work well. The reason I think Gigabyte did that was to isolate it and maximize board cooling, it’s a bit silly because of how good those power stages are already.

I also wanted to provide a warning to anyone else with the Gigabyte B550 ITX about over-tightening the M2 screws. The way the hardware works, you have a standoff soldered to the motherboard, then the SSD drive goes on top of that, then follows an offset to separate the SSD from the heatsink (the offset looks like a hex nut with threads coming out the bottom), then comes the heatsink and finally a screw. The problem comes from tightening the offset. The way the offset is made, there is a threaded piece that goes into a nut, and this thread is merely held into the nut with some blue loctite. If you turn the offset too many times, you can actually break the loctite and start threading the offset's threads down into the motherboard standoff to the point where the nut comes off leaving just threads plugging your motherboard standoff. At this point you will never be able to properly mount your SSD without some alternative like glue or tape. This is a really bad design and very frustrating too. I just moved my SSD to the slot on the other side of the motherboard (the one with no heatsink) but I just wanted to warn anyone not to turn the offset too many times.
@MachinesMore

I have gripes with both of these motherboards, the Aorus lacks a USB 3.2 Gen2 connector and the Asus Strix B550 lacks a decent amount of rear IO while commanding a X570 ITX price tag. I am planning on getting the SSUPD Meshlicious case and it has a front mounted USB-C 3.2 Gen2 connector on the front panel which would go unused if I picked up the Aorus B550. I think the MSI MPG B550I Gaming Edge WIFI board would suit my needs best, only downside is they positioned the CMOS clear in a horrendous spot that's a bitch to access in case you have to reset the bios.

I'm having a hell of a time choosing between X570-i Strix and the Gigabyte B550i. I have both in hand and the price difference was only $30. You said the Asus x570-i is better than the Asus B550i, but is it also as easy to work with for first time builders?
@MachinesMore
@MachinesMore 3 жыл бұрын
Both are great boards and will run any Ryzen chip just fine, both are easy to build with - the M.2 heatsink assembly on the Aorus is slightly confusing but once you understand it it’s not difficult to install. The X570 I Strix does have a often buzzy VRM/Chipset fan, and it lacks the backplate and integrated I/O shield that the Aorus B550 I has, but the layout of the headers is more straightforward. If I were to choose I’d go with the B550 and save the $30, while that’s a low premium to pay, I’d say most builders will be just fine with B550 unless there is a need for multiple PCIe 4.0 NVME drives. The Aorus B550 is all passive board cooling which is very nice too.

I chose the B550 exclusively because it has a temp probe header. Simply invaluable in a custom loop. Strangely only Asus seems to put these on their ITX boards, what is that about? I could not find a single other B550 or X570 board that had a temp probe, other than Asus boards. Luckily for me the Asus one also seems to be the board with best top rad/fan clearance in the NR200 so I definitely do not regret my decision.
@MachinesMore
@MachinesMore 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it’s a huge plus for the custom loop builder. They even have it on the B450 I. This is just a niche feature, these boards already tend to be more siloed by virtue of being ITX, so I think board designers are less inclined to implement a feature that will only be marketable to a small percentage of builders. Oddly on the equivalent level B460 Intel board from Asus there isn’t such a header.
