Also designed by Isaac himself, Jaws of the Lion seeks to keep the best parts of Gloomhaven, while making the experience easier for newcomers to get into. Gloomhaven itself is the number one game of all time on Board Game Geek, boasting the popular dungeon crawler theme, as players assume a class, grab their friends, and jump into dungeons while leveling up and getting more and more gear. But what really sets Gloomhaven apart from many dungeon crawlers is the amazing combat system, where players will pick 2 cards from their diminishing hand every turn, causing players to be careful in managing their resources and working together. You guys are gonna have a HUGE channel if you keep this up. Love the content. You guys do very thorough explanations on the games, I can tell it takes a lot of work and editing to put these together. The different personalities work great as well. The only thing I don’t like is you don’t have 1000 videos for me to comb through yet lol. Seriously, keep it up guys!!

Some folks like me were willing to learn Gloomhaven but just didn't have the time for all the setup or lengthy campaign. Streamlining things helps a ton in that department. I wish more of the big board games had streamlined versions you could buy.

Jaws of the Lion isn't just a great introduction to the world of Gloomhaven. It actually makes Gloomhaven better. I am actually more likely to play Frosthaven because of this game. I'm a lot more excited about the world of Gloomhaven because of Jaws of the Lion.

I have been trying to binge Jaws of the lion content on youtube, having never played gloomhaven or any other dungeon crawler before. Your intro explanation is the first that I have listened to and understood immediately. Your breakdown of the game play is also very easily understood. I have been a little nervous about being the first of a group to buy a game, learn it, and then introduce it to other people but i'm pretty confident now having seen this. Yeah, like most folks, I do already own Gloomhaven (and almost bought Frosthaven a little while ago) and I was hesistant about basically getting the same game again. Definitely going to keep both. I love this review. There are so many points where I'm like "I know right?" The baddies look so cool. In Gloomhaven there were the cultists, but the Zealots look frickin' AMAZING. Can't agree about dice being better. I actually love how there's actually no such thing as a "miss" in Gloomhaven. Even if your attack does no damage, if you are poisoning or muddling or wounding then that still happens. And there's so much more actual decision making with the cards rather than the regular disappointment of rolling the dice.

Yup. That there big box with the full legacy deal turned me right off. With JOTL I can literally keep a list of locations and coordinates for the locations, and when I want to, walk the cards back to the beginning. Leaving the option to replay with different people and sets of characters chosen. I've heard other reviewers that say there is a sequel to Gloomhaven, but none of them have heard of anyone getting past Gloomhaven. Plus the mapbooks were a great surprise and yes, I got it all in one box. Avalon Hill used this type of teaching in many of it's complex games. They called it the Program Instructive Method. Got you right into the action without having to read the whole legal document that was the rules in one bite. Glad to find your channel. 16:15 recommend to anyone with a remote interest in GH. Well, no. The ultimate dungeon crawler? Highly recommended is 1: Dungeon Flee (perfect quickie) 2: One Deck Dungeon (with the grinding sheet). 3: Ruins: Death Binder (get yourself the companion pdf) You don't want big boxes. Big boxes are hard to take out and set up.

My FLGS had this in the store for $36. I really couldn't pass it up and glad I didn't. We have only played the first 4 scenarios so far but wow, the classes are so much fun. Hands down better than the starting characters from the base game and arguably better than most of the unlockable classes. And the scenario book is brilliant, so glad Isaac is making them for the two big box games as well.

You guys make really great reviews. I'm not a fan of Gloomhaven, but i like your reviews. This game is too exhausting to me. Too many choices to make that you don't want to make. Leaving coins on the ground, wanting to play two top or bottom halves of a card during the same turn, etc.

This video (and channel) needs more comments and more views. Great review. This is my “in” to Gloomhaven. I’ve no doubts about my own interest in the big daddy/momma version but if I want to bring others I can play with along for the ride “this is the way”. And hopefully by the time we have played JotL, Frosthaven will be ready to roll. I do find myself wondering about the repetitive nature of all scenario aims being “kill all enemies” and I hope Frosthaven will have more variety. I’d like to see a few more alternative puzzles/riddles/challenges etc to solve as a cooperative team. I suppose I can see that each scenario in a way is its own puzzle for you to solve through choices you make, kinda like Sudoku which all look and play the same but really are quite different and require different approaches. To those that have played, is that an unfair comparison? I have just gotten JotL but have not had a chance to play yet.

I know that "kill all enemies" as an objective is less of a majority for Frosthaven and the Gloomhaven Forgotten Circles expansion, as they both have extended scenario booklets that have branching paths and actual puzzles. Base Gloomhaven and Jaws are definitely more of a romp through dungeons killing stuff, though there are occasionally variants like "survive X rounds", or "destroy these objectives". The combat is absolutely excellent though, they are more of a puzzle themselves and incredibly thoughtful in comparison to most other dungeon crawlers. -Daniel

Thank you for the review and for sharing your thoughts. I recently started playing Jaws of The Lion with my two brothers and it’s a lot of fun. I am playing the Voidwarden and they the Hatchet and Red Guard. Voidwarden seems to give me a headache every time when I try and think which cards to bring or what combos to make or how this class is actually intended to be played. Still enjoy it though but I am certain it’s not for everybody. We finished scenario 14 recently after two tries on normal difficulty and that was satisfying. Preparing for scenario 15 which to me seems like a nightmare, I hope our actual experience is better. I think the combat mechanics and the system in general are quite addictive but this whole game feels like a giant puzzle you have to solve. Some people will like that, others not. Also personally from what I’ve seen so far the story isn’t that good, it’s mostly filler text but like you said it’s enough to keep you going but definitely not enough to really care about the characters involved. I would like a better story and writing for sure. Also the world building seems kind of dumb but this is a small game comparatively so I don’t know. I guess the world of that game just doesn’t jump out to me. I still like to play it so far but it’s starting to overstay its welcome I think. And don’t get me wrong, there were a couple of nights where I couldn’t sleep because I was thinking of ways to beat a scenario and that’s a good thing I think but the lack of character development and world building is starting to show for me. I guess for other people it’s not even an issue. The level 5 unlock was pretty cool but not so much for the Voidwarden I think. Also like you mentioned the setup is pretty easy and I definitely appreciate that. But still even after all these quality of life improvements it’s a bit finicky trying to manage all the tokens and the monsters. Also the elements system is a bit weird to me and I wish I didn’t have to manage them every turn. Good thing there’s 3 of us and the work gets distributed. Still I would suggest it to anyone interested in the Gloomhaven brand or in board games in general. Thank you for reading this 🙂

We fell in love with JotL after being scared off by the scope of Gloomhaven originally. And after we finish JotL I think we’re going to wait until the scenario books drop for GH and FH before we buy

Did you try having proxy cards? Ended up doing that for some of my personal quests. Get the helper and you don't need the monsters (coins)or their deck, print out the map, printed out the class cards, marked some playing cards as items and a draw deck. The class cards are really nice but it helps that they don't usually get shuffled. The NPC turns really adds playtime especially at higher player counts but also gives you more options.

"Chungus big box" that had me, man. Diet Gloomhaven definitely is notably better for new folks and even veterans can enjoy it. I'm glad they elected to release this, it's definitely got some people initially intimidated by the game to try it!

Jaws of the Lion was the best board game experience I've had so far... My wife and I are getting close to the gran finale playing hatchet/demo and omg this is incredible. An easy straight out 10/10

If your review wasn't so good that i wanted see more of your stuff, I def would have yielded to the temptation to not leave a thumbs up. but i did. wish i could have given 3 short of a thumbs up instead. but good review except for that. blaming gloomhaven for your frustration with hosting an online event. you have made them the victim of your confusion of two different kinds of experience, my friend. and you know you love it!!! you know you love it.

As much as I would love to get Gloomhaven- the sheer scale of the thing is beyond my means. Haven’t board games learnt anything from video game companies. You don’t release a fully intact product. You complete it and strip it down, sell the core game and get people to fork out for expansions. Drip feed it to us so we don’t notice we’re being ripped off (okay, maybe T.I.M.E Stories did that) . I will get this version. It looks compact enough for me to run. Love the content, guys. You and No Pun Included are my favourites.

We are loving Red Guard's ability to put up a shroud of fire. It affects any baddie that moves next to you.... or that you use a pull ability to drag into the flames mwahaha!

I've been considering picking this one up, as the streamlined approach it takes to Gloomhaven will appeal to my group. That said, the thing that bugs me about it is on the presentation front and how the board is composed of a spiral bound notebook...it's rather small, it just looks cheap, I'm distracted by the spiral spine whenever I see it, and I worry that it'll detract from the experience while I'm playing it.

I honestly find the tiles feeling cheaper because of the generic backgrounds and use of overlay pieces to cover up odd walls and borders. The built in scenario booklet has unique art done for every scenario which really makes them all individually stand out imo. Frosthaven is going to have much prettier tiles though! -Daniel

Voidwarden vs Demolitionist? About to start a 3 player game where the other two are playing Red Guard and Hatchet. Will one give a better balance to the squad over the other?

Balance is very well done imo because you can pretty much always play with whatever combination you'd like! Though with our group's playstyle I would personally pick Demo because we just like lots of damage haha. Voidwarden would still be strong because Red Guard is an extremely consistent target for a lot of attack-granting actions. Funny enough though, Voidwarden works really well with Demo because of how easily Voidwarden can position enemies next to walls to help out Demo haha. Ultimately, I'd say it's your call, just pick whoever looks more fun to you! Do you wanna run around blowing stuff up for big damage with Demo or having an absurd amount of utility with Voidwarden?

You can replay a campaign! There's only permanent stickers for the map, which doesn't affect gameplay, only very minor spoilers which probably won't matter on a replay. If you're really concerned you can get removable map stickers online! -Ashton

Are you talking about bagging the monster standees and ability cards together? I personally do that like the game suggests, I guess Ashton just had his own preference at the time this was being produced. -Daniel

@@Shelfside I am not sure what the tokens with the monster types at 5:33 are called, but the setup leaflet indicates each of them should go with the monster image tokens and the monster cards

Great Review. I can understand the 7/10 if you are doing all the admin and mini moving ever lol I basically do that for 2 gloomhaven groups, but I enjoy it. Diet Gloomhaven is what I'm going to get my girlfriend to play with me to get her into this nonsense. by then Frosthaven will be out and Se'll be more than up to speed for that lol

A lot of that probably comes from the fact that we received the game early, meaning there was no TTS mod to use for a while, but thankfully we play over TTS nowadays lol -Daniel

Yup! Frosthaven just adds more stuff onto the formula, and while I'd still recommend reading the whole rulebook, it's fundamentally just adding things like new conditions, new abilities like summoning, and the new town management phase between scenarios. -Daniel

You wont be able to re-apply stickers, but it still works just fine! And there's 2 paths so you can pick the one you didn't do the first time -Daniel

Sometimes, I think Gloomhaven would have been better if it was released as several "Jaws of the Lion" style packages, instead of one big box.

I think that would just be harder for Isaac to release on Kickstarter way back when! It's been a while since base gloomhaven, so daddy isaac has learned a lot in self-publishing anyways with JoTL's accessibility -Ashton

Yeah I think the current thing a lot of people use is Gloomhaven Secretary, but honestly from my experience there's a gajillion good ones in the Gloomhaven subreddit sidebar. -Daniel

Tbf there's only 1 that actually messes with the gameplay and it's very easily googled, the rest are just minor stuff liek thsi and pop up only a handful of times. -Daniel
