I've always find it interesting that Atlus designed Mastema to be this sort of traitor/misguided/selfish being from the Law army, he's usually presented as an angel trying to control humans for his own gains rather than God and it's even implied in the Clipped Wings DLC for SMT4 he's the one that asks you to defeat the Archangel, it's a really interesting dynamic and something you don't see much from Law forces.

Chips Light Mastema is the one character that makes the SMT games blur the lines that divide Law, Chaos and Neutral. Bc when u strip down the sides and their representative to their basics, it’s essentially selfish beings who want to forge a world in their image, whatever that may be; this does include neutral btw. It’s only their little ideological differences and quirks that distinguishes each side from the other. How Mastema works to blur the line is how if he were to go just even more selfish, nuttier, or just tweak his potential unhinged-ness you might as well have a Chaos or Neutral evil character.

Ok, but in SMT IV he’s a total bro. In IV Law is probably the most extremist it’s ever been without any redeeming qualities. But Mastema (despite being on Tayama’s side) actively tries to sabotage the fucked up shit the archangels are doing. He’s more of a neutral rep, and a much better one than Isabeau

Its implied that Mastema was one of Akira/King Aquilla's trusted demons. Akira is basically King Homie, so we gotta trust Mastema on this one.

Tokyo in IV was horrible. they had bloodsport gladiator arenas pitting humans against each other. and when flynn didn't kill his fellow man he was pelted by the jeering crowds. Tokyo was fucked and the Angels had a reason to think it was better gone

I don't know why, but I kind of like Mastema, maybe because he's far more human than all the other heralds? Also, I believed his voice to be far more shady and sinister, he instead sounds like an honorable knight of sorts.

Mastema is the face of Strange Journey, he might appear in other games but he is so iconic in SJ because of the role he covers.

Mastema's pre fight dialogue is mostly him reciting the script that he's been using to convince the other angels and followers of God that he is like them. his dialogue once the battle begins is him venting his true feelings towards you.
