I don’t travel much but will be able to get the use of the $300 credit and 10,000 miles for a break even. The deciding factor for me is the extra $100 that covers our Shipt membership that we were paying for already. We also find a lot of stores we use in the shopping portal that have 5-12% cash back. Nice card and definitely keeping for year 2. Nice video!

Good point about the Shipt membership! The choice is yours, but overall it may not be worth it to (a) get 3 hard inquiries (b) open a new account and (c) spend $395 in order to get $400. Sounds like a lot of inconvenience for $5 😁

I feel like the Venture X is a no-brainer if you plan on booking one trip a year with it. You could technically milk like 80% of the value from the card with just one booking with them, but if you want to get even more value from it, it isn't hard to do! This one is definitely on my application radar here in the next few months. Great breakdown Mark!

Interesting. I'm kind of a one trip per year guy. I mean I travel more, but mostly it involves driving somewhere and sleeping in a tent. As far as getting on an airplane and going somewhere to stay in a hotel, maybe once a year. I recently went with the Chase Sapphire Preferred. I haven't completely ruled out the Venture X, but the idea has been pushed to the back burner.

I like when point earning cards also have an option to redeem the points for a 1 cpp value if you just have too much going on and won’t be able to travel for a bit. Charles Schwab Plat makes that possible for Amex, Chase and Citi cash back cards technically earn points but the redemption for cash back is 1 cpp. Idk I like optionality I guess is what I am saying haha.

If not transferring to travel partners always book flights at cash price and then cover it with your miles/points for statement credit. That way you earn the 2x-5x points for the flight purchase. If you book with points you don’t get the 2x/5x. Edit: spelling

this card has some pros and cons, but overall i feel like i really get my monies worth between the travel credit and 10k points per year. I am a huge fan of the capital one travel portal. i compare prices across all platforms when i have an upcoming trip and they have some of the best prices around. the price prediction tool is pretty great. i used my $300 annual credit for my rental car in kauai in a couple of weeks. a compact car started at $1000 per week a year ago. then dropped to $347 (midsize car) two weeks ago. back up to $600 this week. i booked the car with my venture x card, got 10x points = 3470 points. the travel reps told me to book it with the card so that i could get the bonus points instead of booking the trips using points. then pay use points to pay for the charge when it posts to the account. it was a very easy way to get some some free points. I was very impressed with this phone rep lol. one really big con about the venture x is their lack of domestic airline transfer partners. i also have the chase reserve and really like most of their transfer partners. chase travel portal is decent, but capital one's is definitely better.

I went backwards on getting this card. My wife is an airline employee, so I only need miles for premium interline seats. I rent cars almost weekly and stay in two-three star hotels and discount timeshares a lot. And I have to fork out $800.00 a year for those nice Alaska lounges. So I got Venture X for: 1. Primary rental insurance 2.Lounge access 3. Hertz Presidents Circle Upgrade 4. All of the above for my AUs 5. Global entry comp 6. Miles can get me out of a tight spot

I debated this, the Chase Sapphire, and new Bilt. I pay rent monthly and the ratios on travel partners honestly pushed me to the Bilt card. It will easily pay for itself as a no annual fee card for travel until I need lounge access. Excited for your upcoming Bilt review.

The capital one travel portal also does a great job with price matching. So don’t feel like you’re missing out by booking with capital one compared to like expedia. Just get it price matched!

I love the VX. The only thing they need is some decent transfer partners. Their current list is meh at best. Or just give us a portal boost like Chase. The C1 travel portal is far superior to chase IMO, and they give you price matching. Other than the 'flat value' points, this is my favorite card.

The 10K anniversary miles basically acts as a retention offer since valuing that bonus at 1 cent per point plus the $300 travel credit is a $400 value on a $395 AF card

I am seriously considering applying the VentureX, however I am worried about finding good flights for my upcoming international travel. For example, I am looking to fly from San Francisco to Malaysia, I can easily book those flight from either Singapore airline or China airline..........i thought I can try the C1 Travel portal, but it's only for member log in which sucks. I really like the lounge access because my family fly once a year on this route.

In my case, I'm keeping my Venture X this year, I'm still with team "one travel card". What's keeping me is the 300 travel credit (which I exclusively use on airline tickets) and 10,000 renewal miles. I don't care to "maximize" my rewards, so I just use my points to cover my travel spending directly with hotels and car rentals at 1c per mile. Unfortunately most of my travel is for business and I can't use travel portals when booking on company travel, but 2x miles is still 2x miles. Regardless, I like this card for the Capital One lounge in DFW (my usual connection) and soon to be at LAS :). Only disappointment to me is the dropping of the priority pass restaurants this year, I didn't get to try any since I've always gone to a priority pass lounge or the Capital one lounge, but it's a loss anyway. Overall I think this is still the ideal card for us "value" hunting travelers who want one travel card to get the annual fee recuperation out of the way easy, and then just enjoy the benefits.

The Capital One Lounge is fantastic. The Denver C1 Lounge is slated to open in March. SAN has 1 Priority Pass lounge and 1 Priority Pass restaurant. But a Chase Sapphire Lounge will be opening there soon and give PP users another option. Lose a restaurant but gain another lounge in SAN.

You can use the rewards miles from the Capital One Venture X for domestic flights, including Southwest. However, if you pay cash for Southwest flights with this card, you'll only earn 2X miles. The card earns 5X on flights but only when they're booked via the Capital One Travel portal, and Southwest is not available there.

2 questions 1) I heard with the regular venture reward card, u get primary coverage for international car rental. Is that true? 2) when booking car rental thru a credit card portal such capital one portal, does the auto coverage still valid or do u have to book it directly with car rental?

Love your vids! Always so thorough and smart! Definitely my fav channel on YT. I do love rewards and try to maximize them but I have to admit I love high credit limits too. For some reason Cap1 has not been generous to me with credit limits. I have cards with several other providers that have limits $25-$30k. My Cap1 Spark business is decent but my Cap1 personal cards are 🤮

Appreciate the support & glad you find value in the channel, Scott! Consider using some of your existing C1 cards & then requesting a CLI (as Shawn mentioned). Also ask if a hard pull is required before proceeding, that way you can be informed to make the right decision for you.

For some people, yes. For others, no. Don't start with the card & try to force it into your strategy. Rather, start with your strategy & then add the cards that help you achieve what you want.

So from what I have heard is that you can only hold 2 personal capital credit cards (non-business cards) at one time. Unfortunately I have the quicksilver and savor one cards already. My plan was to have the savor one and venture x as my 2 main cards. I don't want to upgrade the quicksilver because i know I won't get to take advantage of the signup bonuses the venture x offers when you apply for a new account? What would you suggest i do to be able to somehow get the venture x and take advantage of the sign up bonuses? The quicksilver is alsonthe cedit card I have had the longest. Please help!!!

I did pick up this card a month ago and will evaluate over the next year. This will be my primary travel card this year I I do plan to utilize the 2% cash back for gap purchases not covered by my other cards with fixed and rotating categories. I will also use the $300 credit and plan to book through the portal even though it will require more research. The other perks don't carry much value for me at this time. I can't use the cell phone protection since Verizon requires debit or their credit card otherwise my bill would rise by $40 per month. I also have little use for the lounge access since they do not have any in Chicago except at the International terminal. I may get one lounge use next year with a planned Vegas trip on the way back. I doubt I will use the Hertz membership as well... Even without using those perks I will likely keep in year 2. . I will be using to book hotels more than anything else and will have to determine if the 10% is worth it. I will monitor the 2% as well as that was a difference maker between getting this and the Schwab Amex Platinum or the Chase Reserve.

Still haven’t got my travel credit and planning to product change to quicksilver. Hated using the travel portal cause of the increased rates and no statuses applied on hotels and rental cars. There is no online chat customer service either.

I don't have data points to substantiate that. Portals may have higher pricing, the same pricing, or lower pricing for certain flights / hotels at different times throughout the year. It's advised to compare pricing before booking.

The answer will be 'yes' for some people and 'no' for others. Don't start with the card(s) first. Rather, start with what you want to achieve in terms of rewards, benefits, etc. Then get the cards that fill those gaps for you personally.

On my last trip, I visited 1 Priority Pass, 1 Plaza Premium, and the Capital One Lounge. The food at the C1 Lounge was excellent. Can’t wait for the Denver C1 Lounge to open in March.

@@Jes1919 The lounges unique to the Amex Platinum are the Centurion and Escape lounges, Delta Sky Club when flying Delta, and Lufthansa lounges when flying Lufthansa, Austrian, or Swiss. Amex lists Airspace lounges, but the only one listed is in San Diego, and that’s now an Aspire lounge you can access with Priority Pass. Venture X’s unique lounge offering is the Capital One Lounge.

I'm not aware of Capital One having a min. age requirement for AUs. I found this article by CNBC which states the same: www.cnbc.com/select/whats-the-minimum-age-to-be-an-authorized-user-on-a-credit-card/ To confirm 100%, I'd call Capital One and ask.

@@MarkReese based on my findings it looks like minors can get added as AUs in certain banks like Chase. Amex has age restrictions. Most importantly it looks like Priority Pass has 18 min age. So unless you have access to card branded lounges there is a lot consider for families traveling when it comes to which card to use for lounge access. A lot more strategic spending needed, but pretty straight forward for individuals.

Then it comes down to which benefits, if any, you want to share with an AU and if those have their own age restrictions. Definitely a # of things to think about.

Idk. I feel using the Cap One VenX is limited. I have the AMEX and Chase setup and my girlfriend has the Capital One set up. In my opinion, I feel like her set up is limited. And sometimes I can see in her (she won’t admit to it) that she should have vested in the Chase set up as she see how I use them throughout my regular day and travels.

The flip side of having the C1 setup is that it is simpler since the Venture X can be your catchall and even your only card. It also doesn’t hurt that C1 has most of the same airline transfer partners that Amex has. I run a Chase setup and plan to start an Amex setup soon.

From what I've seen, it's typically 1 total credit of $100 shared across the entire account (i.e. the primary cardholder and all AUs). The Amex Platinum Card (personal + business versions) are an exception as AUs get their own credits for GE / TSA PreCheck.

Yes cancel! The travel credit is not worth it. We recently rented a car using it and did t find out until we arrived at the counter that we could not take the car over the state line where our hotel was. Capital One Travel told us it was non refundable AND Capital One told us they do not handle disputes with Capital One Travel. With the dropping of Priority Pass Restaurants there is no benefit to this card any longer.

Never rent a car through any portal since it is considered 3rd party booking and you get all sorts of issues. Same with hotels. Flights are fine because they are paid cash to the airline and assuming you are using a decent mainline airline like Delta, they can handle rebookings on their end at the airport.

I haven’t used the travel credit yet. Based on what you and many others have said, I get the sense that the credit would be best used on a hotel booking, particularly for something in the Premier Collection and/or a boutique hotel.

You could save even more money by staying put and not flying everywhere. They have buildings and food and trees and things where you are. A California tree is not going to change your life more or less than a Texas tree. If you are unhappy with where you live and want to leave and go somewhere better, then travel isn't the solution. Moving is the solution. If you move to your favorite place, then travel and vacations would always be a negative experience by comparison to your home.

You're not wrong but your strategy is not absolutely correct either. Everyplace doesn't have the same everything that everywhere else has all the time and a change of scenery and environment sometime takes hundreds or thousands of miles away from 'home' to be effective. And sometimes you only want a' break' for a short while, to energize, but too long of a break somewhere else loses its effect eventually. And last but not last if you're grounded somewhere with family or work or whatever, then leaving permanently is not the answer either.
