Some people would like to see macOS running on iPad. Others insist that iPad should remain a tablet-only computing experience. And there's plenty of others sat somewhere in between those two opinions. Let me share my thoughts...
...and whilst I'm at it, what's with all the noise about M4 having double the Neural Engine (NPU) performance of M3?

As a new iOS user (I had an iPhone 3G way back) I find the file management to be ahead of Android and was quite surprised how easy it was to transfer files from a USB-C card reader directly to my NAS on an iPad Mini. File management on iPadOS was better when it didn’t exist at all. The pathetic excuse Apple came up with after 50 updates is actually disastrous. I’ve lost so much valuable data thinking a file copy I initiated actually happened. It’s truly disgraceful to do this to their customers. Yes, I’m PISSED! At this rate iPadOS 275.0.1 might be legit. Touting performance numbers is about as rookie as it gets when the software throws away data. I bought the top iPadPRO 12.9 1TB with 6GB of “RAM”. It makes no difference. The performance might matter if I had any idea what my $2200 machine did with 80GB of my hard work.

I always pitch in this suggestion: the iPad should keep iPadOS but be able to run macOS apps that have been approved and curated on the _Mac App Store._ That way devs can specifically allow it and ensure that they run sandboxed with whatever specific APIs the iPad uses. Apple can also warn prospective users that these apps are intended for use with a trackpad and keyboard. That way iPad users are even purchasing Apps that encourage them to upsell to a Mac in the future

Like you, I bought a M1 2TB 12.9-inch iPad Pro and have regreted that decision ever since. iPad OS works for my wife, but she doesn't need an iPad Pro to meet her computing needs, but iPad OS, or as I now call it iPoor OS and my iPad Pro doesn't work for me. My biggest problems with iPad OS are the walled garden of mostly mediocre smart phone style apps, the files app, and the awful web kit. If I am going to spend £3k on a M4 iPad Pro and accessories it needs to also be a laptop replacement and do everything my MacBook Pro can. It doesn't necessarily need to run Mac OS, but I want to have complete freedom of choice to sideload any apps I want, have the capability to format, repair and image external SSDs and memory cards, and run VMs (I was able to do the later in a limited way on M1 iPad Pro, but then Apple made sideloading UTM even more difficult when upgrading to iPad OS 17). Mac OS no longer works for me due to the lack of a touch display and stylus support. Consequently, I am moving away from purchasing any more Apple iPad Pros and MacBooks. I've spent the past year getting all my apps, web apps, virtual machines, games, retro game emulation, and developer tools I use to work of Windows 11 arm. I plan to buy a Microsoft Surface Pro 11 with Snapdragon X Elite processor, because that will better meet my needs, than the messy combination of iPad Pro and M2 MacBook Pro. My understanding is Apple has been struggling with iPad Pro sales, and it looks to me that the M4 iPad Pro will exacerbate the problem rather than improve it. I agree for some people iPad OS really works, but I suspect the M2 iPad Air has all the technical capability they need plus still has some to spare that cannot be fully utilised by iPad OS 17. But as it stands, iPad OS makes the M4 iPad Pro with all its amazing technology the most pointless product in Apple's product portfolio.

You are missing the point. Apple has said they are two seperate devices and it is you who are conflating the differences. Most people understand one is a tablet with a touch UI and the other (Macs) a desktop OS. Buy what suits you, or both, and if you have the disposable income get the Pro versions of each. People complaining about tablets when it is not for them is crazy, like complaining about buying a sports care and then commenting on every review that it is not much good off-road! Product differentaition rather than trying to make a compromised one-device-for-all is a sensible business model. Just ask MS how well turning Windows 7 into a hybrid tablet/desktop OS went (W8). That dumb move cost MS billions and meant they are a non-entity in the tablet market. It doesn’t work and people expecting Apple to repeat history is insane.
@FragEightyfive
@FragEightyfive 24 күн бұрын
@@andyH_England The point is that the iPad Pro and iPad air run laptop equivalent hardware, but apple locks them down to run a smartphone OS on that laptop hardware. Apple does this so you buy both an iPad and a Macbook. The larger models could very easily be as used like a Microsoft Surface, ROG Flow, Lenovo IdeaPad, Minisform v3, etc... but then you wouldn't also buy a Macbook. The large iPads are a strange one, you have a laptop sized device (with laptop hardware at a laptop price) that has the usefulness of a smartphone.

Various vendor apps for managing network infrastructure (love Ubiquity), common Hurricane Electric network tools, Prompt for SSH and RealVNC and Microsoft RD client for remote desktop. I've started with iPad Pro 10" from 2017, and now I'm on iPad Pro 11" with M2. Generally speaking, I'm quite satisfied, how it's working now. Just two top frustrations: - F-keys and navigation keys in RD Client (mapping issues? don't know, have no time to dig) - nightmare avoided only because I work with *BSD and Ubuntu and can use vi-style navigation; - Music app is always pauses when MS RD Client plays sound, e.g. notification from chat or beep from excessive tabbing or backspacing in shell. I do not want macOS on iPad, I just want iPadOS behave more reasonable. Funny thing that I didn't miss the ability to burn ISO image to USB drive. And yes, I despise notebooks and laptops :)

What do you feel about running a Cloud PC on an iPad? If Cloud PC then why not a Virtual PC on the iPad and if Virtual PC why not a full desktop-capable OS along with Touch-UI and other mobile-useful OS features? It's a fallacy to say a laptop is different from a tablet, look at Surface products or the same argument about Desktops vs Laptops: Sure something is better in one vs the other eg cost vs hardware but then portability and preference is higher one than the other also. So it is with tablets with the hardware they now carry.

I’d prefer the iPad Pro’s software to improve enough so I don’t need to haul the MBP around with me as well, and when I consider the fact that there’s an iMac at home, in an ideal world I simply wouldn’t want the MBP at all, but Apple’s compelling me to have it because the iPad’s software is just not good enough to handle basic things like a normal corporate workflow, thanks to awful multitasking.

The iPadOS is a great starting point as it deals with the tablet form factor well. It just needs to add more laptop capabilities. Enhancements that could improve iPadOS are: 1. Apple needs to enhance Stage Manager and maybe provide a third multi-tasking option that is more macOS-like. Having three options allows a user to have a multi-tasking experience to their likely. 2. File Manager Pro - Apple should address issues with the current File Manager and a Mac-like file manager for the Pro users. 3. Enhance USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 capabilities- enhance iPadOS to allow the iPad to better integrate with external devices through USB-C / Thunderbolt 3. 4. Have a Samsung DeX that provides a Mac-like experience. 5. Ability to run Parallels on iPad: this allows the user to run Mac or Windows from the iPad.

IMO, if Apple wants to put a desktop OS on the iPad, they're making a mistake. If I were them, I'd go the opposite direction as Microsoft. Add desktop features to iPad OS. I cite the Surface line for my reasons why. Microsoft tried to make Windows tablet friendly with Windows 8 and people revolted. Now Windows 10 and 11 have left the tablet experience to whither and die. It is extremely frustrating to use a Windows tablet without a mouse and keyboard. The desktop mode must be gate kept to prevent the ecosystem from ignoring the tablet UI. It doesnt have to be particularly onerous, just enough to make it clear that it is a tablet that can do deskop stuff rather than a laptop that can do tablet stuff. Chrome OS has an option burried deep in the settings to enable full access to the Debian backend. Perhaps something similar and only on the pro models.

If I wanted to run MacOS in a portable device I would buy a MacBook. I have an iPad Pro with a Magic keyboard. I have owned a Surface Pro and hated the Windows tablet experience. An iPad running iPadOS gives me access to the full catalog of iPadOS and iOS apps including some apps I used for work such as MS Outlook, Teams and OneNote. For anything more demanding there is a Citrix app that gives me access to my Windows Desktop (with a 32 core AMD Threadripper). For me it’s the perfect travel device.

Why not say that about Voice-AI input also? It's absurd. It's a minor issue to resolve. The real issue is iOS file-manager is designed to distance the user from kernal space and also the background tasks management in it's original inception a a mobile-OS. Now the hardware is matching laptops as is the price so the real issue is an updated OS that resolves these issues. That will only happen when WOA/Snapdragon are in more competing 2-in-1 devices which forces Apple to provide a higher tier iPad category which looks like that's what they'll end up doing see the Magic Keyboard convergence for eg or Sonoma UI for eg... So still a 1-2 years away yet.

Personally I don't want to see MacOs on the iPad but having said that iPadOS absolutely needs a better and more reliable Files app (file management on an iPad is a chore and like you said sometimes unreliable), Background process that would allow to have more powerful and better apps... avoiding situations like completely “freezing" the iPad when it's exporting/rendering videos or audio projects, and even allow apps like a proper clipboard manager, multiple audio input/output, real desktop safari because some websites refuse or don’t work properly and improvements to Stage Manager, which is already an opt-in feature so limit those artificial constraints. But the most important thing is Apple not treating the iPad as a companion product just to sell it along a Mac, or at least not the pro models that can go up to 3000$, case point being the iPad event, the tagline at the end said filmed on iPhone edited on Mac AND iPad... it's like telling me that the iPad couldn't have handled the finished product, but it can...specially if they had given color correction to Final Cut Pro for iPad.

You hit the nail on the head when you talk about needing iPad to better manage files and multitasking. The iPad still kills apps in the background. And some apps simply don’t do multitasking (I’m looking at all of Google’s apps that will never let you open more than one instance in multitasking). What I’d just add to the files and multitasking wish list is further closing the capability gap between Mac and iPad apps - this isn’t all on Apple though (again, I’m looking at Google with poor iPad apps).

This is my experience, I am not saying one is better than the other for everyone. I chose to go with the iPad Pro and sell my MacBook Pro about 5 years ago. I’ve never looked back. For this list, I’m comparing the M4 iPad Pro 13 to the current MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro: Hardware: 1. Versatility - The ability to interact with the device in many ways. In “Laptop Mode” with the Magic Keyboard I can go from using my fingers, Pencil, trackpad/mouse, and keyboard all seamlessly. Or in “Clipboard Mode” with just the tablet and pencil/touch I can read, watch, draw/annotate, and show/demo something for someone. There are so many ways to hold/use the iPad vs the MacBook Pro. 2. Thinner and lighter, even with the Magic Keyboard . This is important to me as I’m constantly on the go. 3. I prefer FaceID over TouchID. For me it’s always worked more reliably and quickly. 4. OLED > Mini LED. Not a huge difference, but in the dark and in bright sunlight, the OLED sure is nice. 5. Camera on back for scanning documents, or snapping a quick environmental photo (can also do so more discreetly vs taking out your phone). 6. I’m not sure if this is true, but I’ve always felt like the iPad was a bit more durable than the MacBook. Software: 1. Simplicity - I don’t need more complex desktop apps or deep menus. Yes, the MacBook Pro generally has more feature rich software and capabilities, but I have found that those are overkill for me. I am able to run my business using Zoom, iWork apps, and web-based software. For my hobbies, I use GarageBand, LumaFusion, Lightroom, etc. I am able to do everything on the iPad Pro. I could do everything on the MacBook Pro too, but with an inferior interactive experience IMO. 2. Apps like GarageBand, Lightroom, DJ, Notes, FreeForm, LumaFusion, etc. are more enjoyable with the touch interface and Pencil support. Other apps like News and Books are more enjoyable to read while holding the iPad in tablet mode vs the MacBook. 3. Apps open and close instantly. It’s lightning fast to swipe and switch apps. I love being able to drag an app from the dock to quickly enter split screen. 4. I like the ability to alternate between simple multi-tasking (split screen and slide over) and Stage Manager when using my external monitor. 5. Slide Over is very handy (I always have Calculator, Contacts, ChatGPT, Notes sitting in Slide Over). I use the calculator a lot for work, so it’s great to be able to swipe from the right and do a calculation and then swipe it away. It’s also quicker/easier to tap the numbers on the calculator (touchscreen) on the iPad. 6. There are some native apps that don’t exist for the Mac that I use (Arlo, Insta, KZfaq, games, etc.) 7. The iPad and iPhone operate very much the same way and most of the apps are universal, so it’s easier to go back and forth between an iPhone and iPad than it is between an iPhone and a Mac IMO. GarageBand is a good example (you can pick up where you left off on the iPad and work on a song on the iPhone).

As long-in-the-tooth as it is (and as much as I am envious of my daughter's M1 iPad Pro) I love using my 2017 iPad Pro as an iPad and wouldn't want to change that experience. Buuut... as iPad Pros become increasingly powerful on the hardware side and Macbook Pros become increasingly expensive, I do begin to want to be able to do everything - work and play - on the one device. To replace my M1 Max MBP with the exact equivalent M3 Max MBP, for eg, will cost $1050 more than I paid 2 years ago. I think my relatively simple 4K editing workflow would work on an iPad Pro with 16GB Ram, though being able to do other tasks while rendering out from FCPX or Davinci, as well as better file management (reliability/integrity being paramount) would be necessary. There are a couple of Mac apps that I use in my work that seem unlikely to get iPadOS versions or that have iPadOS versions which have been de-featured by their developers, unfortunately. I'd personally be happy with a dual-booting or emulation solution, even if it was dependent upon connecting to a specific Apple keyboard.

I get most of my work done on a Mac even though I have a 12.9 inch M1 iPad Pro that I would love to be my everything computer and tablet. For my workflow, the problem is the file system. I know that at the end of the day the iPad is a tablet, but the file system is absolutely abysmal even by tablet standards. I just use it for harry suburban stuff , emails , browsing the web , watching KZfaqs , the very occasional tinkering with basic photo touch up , and it follows me around the house everywhere . That's the core problem: Apple will continue tinkering with iPadOS as minor updates while the tablet market sales hold up. I'd be surprised if Apple is not already working on this in a secret lab somewhere internally: If you look at the latest iPad Pros they're converging rapidly on Macbooks so Apple knows which side it's toast is buttered on for the future. Probably more integration with AI of course with the NPU baked more into the OS for automation and interaction (input eg voice, video/screen, typing etc). No doubt Windows 12 will go as similar way and more modular per form factor for background tasks/daemons. Right now, Apple will just keep tinkering with iPadOS leaving it in a half-cooked state unfortunately as it's limited at it's core considering the new hardware. Main issue with the above for Apple is the monetization of software App Store and MacOS Apps. They can easily charge an arm and a brain (pun intended) for the new device so that won't immediately eat into tablet or laptop sales but monetizing the software and unifying the stores across devices is probably their end-game... And why not if they provide what people need sufficiently, securely and reliably.

I read my email, I write occasional letters, you know, just things. I use it for games and my knitting, but I don’t use it for work. It would be nice to have a little faster machine. My iPad Pro is now three years old? So, I’m not ready to upgrade yet. I just don’t want the iPad to be upgraded so much that it cost way too much even for a base model.now, I know this is a tech channel, and there’s mostly tech people here, but there are a lot of us out there who just want an iPad, just to do the plan things.

they just need to continuously improve IPadOS. They've come along way, but there are a few glaring improvements needed to make IPads a true laptop replacement device.

iPadOS will lead to a dead-end for the top line of iPads. Apple will have to release a new OS combining ideas from mobile and desktop OS, so we'll see that happen eventually. Meanwhile Apple will minor update iPadOS while tablets are still selling which will tail off with Windows 2-in-1 with ARM chips.

Just give us a software button to switch between the two OSs. Also give them some shared storage, and shared clipboards. In other words, give us options.

I understand that there is much 'content' to be filled on the internet. And that we all have opinions on stuff. What I don't understand, frankly, is how we (I include myself) can be or ought to be enthralled or bothered to have any discourse on running some version of an OS on some device - as a contentious issue. I think it's time to concentrate on my work. Thanks for your efforts though.

To be honest, I will switch to the new Surface Pro 10 with Snapdragon, because the iPad will still be limited to iPadOS

I’m getting used to stage manager, but it’s no substitute for proper windowed apps. I absolutely agree - they need a mode like Samsung offers. But no to MacOS on an iPad - they’re two different devices.

Sounds good but who is going to fund it? Are iPads so profitable that they can fund a massive development effort in macos? And this cost is in perpetuity, all new features have to be designed with this in mind and also tested. Or are we expecting iPhone sales to fund it?

Apple only expecting five million sales of iPad Pros and only a small percentage want macOS on iPadOS. So, as you say, there is no upside to this for Apple.

@@andyH_England are many going to buy an iPad Pro that cost more than a MacBook only for media consumption and internet browsing ?

Just like Mac used to have boot camp for those who wanted to run windows, iPad with a Mac chip (m1, m2, and now m4) and Thunderbolt/pcie, there should be an option to run macOS or macOS-lite. Free form window management. Much better file management with the ability to unmount media and format empty media, the macOS traffic lights, the macOS menu bar etc. Give users the option to run the more advanced window manager if they so choose, just like boot camp gave Mac users the ability to run windows if they wanted to.

I’ll say this. I’m upgrading from my iPad soon, if wwdc doesn’t bring anything to make the iPads more like computers. I’m gonna have to switch to the new surface pro line, because apple’s holding the ipad back
