At the end, it says you should stay below 1.5 tablespoon of flax seeds per day, if you eat them everyday, to stay below the safety limit for cyanide. But it must be mentioned, that it assumes you don't eat any other source of cyanide. Many foods contain cyanide and so does B12 supplement - cyanocobalamin. So the actual limit of flax seeds per day is somewhat lower.

After discovering Dr Greger I started adding a tablespoon of flaxseed meal to my oatmeal everyday. About six months in I started experiencing some tenderness in my right testicle. It felt hard and seemed to be higher than normal. Then, one day, I randomly watched this video. As I heard the part about the effects of flaxseed on rat testicles I wondered if that could be causing my pain. I quit adding it to my breakfast and voilà, My symptoms subsided over next month. Cause and effect? Who knows.

HOW could they! People are so mean to think flaxseed and flaxseed oil could possibly be toxic, just because it's been used as embalming oil and paint thinner to kill bugs since the dawn of time. So prejudiced people. I'll drink some flax oil in the morning for my health, ,and then paint it on my boat at dinner so alge and bugs won't eat it at lunch. And for desert I'll visit the loo because turns out I'm a collection of little living bugs and the paint thinner i drank killed a bunch and now my stomach is in the toilet. So it makes you slimmer too!

Generally everyone I've discussed flax seeds with over here says: "You shouldn't eat flax seeds, it contains CYANIDE!" and I'm like... "Yeah you're right, but nowhere the amount needed for any kind of negative effect within reasonable doses." to which they respond: "Why risk it though?"... Which is like saying why eat broccoli when too much broccoli can cause a whole bunch of problems. That's just the people I know though but I'd imagine most Swedes have a similar confidence of statements by the institution that gives us nutrition recommendations. Sorry didn't mean to hijack your comment just thought it fit here best.

@Philip J Fry The fact something is not natural (in the sense the required conditions didn't hold during most of the time the human specie has evolved) doesn't make it unhealthy. Ground up flaxseed is the worst thing you can buy! It's already oxidized! You should only buy flax seeds whole and ground them yourself right before you eat them.

Zero problem, it’s vitamin B12 you’re asking about. The typical RDA general supplemental dose of vitamin B12 is 1-25 mcg per day: The recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of vitamin B12 are: 1.8 mcg; older children and adults, 2.4 mcg; pregnant women, 2.6 mcg; and breast-feeding women, 2.8 mcg. - in any case, a toxic vitamin B12 overdose is practically not possible, as the body simple excretes any excess in the urine. The side effect of overdosing B12 is likely to be a case of acne.

Hey Michele, I always eat my flax seeds when they are ground, in a Smoothie of 2-3 bananas and some plant based milk. I use some not sweetened soy milk since it gives some nice protein and the bananas are sweetening anyways! I can't really taste the flax seeds and they make the smoothie really creamy!

@Philip J Fry Man yeah. Imagine that people in the stoneage learnt off of their previous generations by getting taught as kids what they can eat and what they can't. Eating nuts and seeds as a person in the stone age must've been really nice since you can store them, so they last very long so they are a very nice way to overcome harsh winters. But no, hunting in the snow must've been a way more efficient way to survive am I right? lol

Flaxseed aint healthy for everyone. I use to take flaxseed as advised by the good Dr. But after a while i started to get horrible stomach cramps. Couldnt figure it out. But purely by mistake i didnt buy any for a week, then the stomach cramps went. After i bought some more and ate, then within days the pain started to come back. I stopped flaxseed, the cramps went away again. Thats how i figured it out. So whatever was going on flaxseed aint healthy for everyone. I even soaked them and blended them and had them raw.

The rapidly increased fiber in your diet could possibly have explained your symptoms as well. I think I recall the Dr. mentioning that especially fiber in your diet is one of the things you want to change a little at a time in one of his videos on fiber. (IANAD)
@imannews5419
@imannews5419 5 жыл бұрын
@@-Kerstin iam use to eating a lot of fiber. I eat legumes twice a day, seamoss every day, nuts everyday. The only thing that was a problem was the flaxseed. This persisted for weeks until i figured it out. I was only doing two 2 spoons a day. So that should make much difference in turns of fiber. Normally excess fiber causes bloating and gas. This was not that, it was just a horrible cramping sensations that lasted through the morning until afternoon. Then repeat again everytime i ate them.

Come to think of it quinoa gave me the same cramping feeling too. Took that out and never happend again. I think some grains and seeds just aint for everyone. Like i cannot eat bananas either for a simliar reason.

I got those when I didn't blend well enough & with enough water, or if I jumped too quickly in the amount of fiber when my body wasn't used to it yet. Better now, but I remember that pain. It also took a while to get my body to leave the water alone long enough for the linseed to absorb, rather than just needing to flush it out; I'd end up needing to pee a lot & then feeling really dehydrated.
