@@Slashhead1 This show didn't really showcase him well. I have worked with him and trust me, he is incredibly good and one of the best dudes I have worked with as a player and a person. To be fair, it didn't showcase many of them well. Ric is amazing too from what I can see.

Alex Z is also good. but his guitar tone is awful, too much EQO

Eagle For sure. He seems to know what he's doing, but I can make out like half the notes he plays at most through that tone.

Well he was right. After the riffs all dude did was sweeps. No variety. He kicks ass dont get me wrong.

Jason Lee Yeah, over all the playing isn't terribly interesting, but he was the only one that was technically proficient, yet Alex tells him he's playing "out of his league" pretty much. It just seems odd to me.

himalyan mountain I know about Alex. Harmony and complexity has little to do here, the show is about pure technique, and there's like two contestants that seem like they've played for more than a year.

Caitlin Morffwous but how do assemble a panel of judges with clout enough to do that show. Imo it's more fun out here in the more grey areas. I think Your show would be instant fist fights and diva tantrums.

yea these guys aren’t very good. and the guitars sound shitty. i’ve been playing for 20 years. since i was 7. if i knew about this id totally compete.

The concept is amazing, and the hosts are doing a great job. Give it a chance to go through a couple of iterations. I'm sure it will attract amazing contestants over time.

i am hoping this! though imo metal shredding seems like a bit of a dated/overrated thing, no? All I get from this is a lot of guitar noodling

there are undiscovered guys out there who, though their calibre isn't as high as Alex's, are able to blend musicality with technique.

I guess now that Darryl is gone, I can say that there are better players than me in the show. I'm strictly average but the 3 who left were just too fucking bad.

Rhythm has EVERYTHING to do with being able to play tasty leads. The best example is Paul Gilbert. About the tones...yeah, they suck.

Although Paul himself tends to (jokingly - but hell he always jokes) say he has no feel of rhythm anymore once he goes all-out :D

I guess a big problem with setting a universal tone for everyone to use is not everyone may like the set tone. I agree a better tone can improve your playing as it can give you a confidence boost and other things etc. But if you are forced to use a tone you don't happen to like then that can negatively impact your playing. However, i do think something needs to be done since some guitarists like to use loads of effects which can mask mistakes. This can put them at an advantage since it's harder for the judges to tell if they really nailed that sweep or not. A good example is Alex (the contestant) yeah he played fast, but not always clean. If you watch him compete against Frankie in the final, someone who plays fast and very cleanly, the difference is night and day. Sorry to jump video but a great example is in episode 5 at 1:20. He plays this descending run on the E string; while it may not be too obvious to the judges, from our point of view we can see he's blagging it. If his effects weren't protecting him, he wouldn't be able to do that and thus it's an even playing field, or fret board haha. So maybe a good middle ground would be "Ok guys, here's the amps, good amps, set your distortion, your overdrive, whatever, maybe a wah wah pedal here and there but no crazy effects going on 24/7, we'll sound test you in a minute to see if it's articulate" Don't get me wrong sometimes his effects worked really well but they shouldn't be his default tone on the show for reasons above. Sorry if i deviated haha
