This was recorded on Silent Hunter 4 with TMO 2.0 beta update and RSRD. All difficulty settings were turned on except 'No Map Contact Update' and 'No Event Camera'.

Excellent tutorial! Just one question: when you hit the first ships in the convoy, doesn't the speed change and becomes unpredictable? How do you measure the new speed on the fly, when you have to be fast and can't track the ships for another 3 minutes?

Thanks for the tutorial. I've been playing the game for a few days and I'm getting better with manual TDC, the radar, hydrophone and general stuff like fuel management or navigating in shallow waters. My main problem though, is how to remain undetected. During the convoy attack tutorial, I got into a good ambush postion like you did in the video, estimated the convoy's speed, course and everything, and all of sudden the convoy breaks up and changes course. I was probably detected but that'd be odd since I was waiting for the convoy at full stop, below periscope depth and something like 20 nautical miles ahead. Any tips?

Count of Cagliostro It happens sometimes. The A.I is unpredictable occasionally. The destroyers may have heard your crew if rig for silent running was off.

When you are using ruler, you have a circle around it with degrees displayed. I've got TMO 2.5 and RSRD installed, but only circle I've got is around the sub itself. Any tips on how could I get same ruler as you are using in this tutorial vid?

I cant pass 4th school mission. No matter what I do the destroyers always detect me before I close in to launch torpedos. I approach at slow speed (2/3 ahead) submerged at persicope depth. Persicope collapsed.

Do you have any luck with night surface attacks? Every time i try one i can't get closer than 3000 yards without escorts finding me. I try slowing down and I try with no moon. I know in the war that on certain nights subs were within 800-1200 yards without being spotted going 14 knots, game doesn't simulate that well

click on the green compass thats above the ruler and protractor on the map screen. That should enable all those.

To find knots, time for three minutes, distance traveled/100?

Yes. For example, 12 kts == 12 NM(Nautical Miles) per hour == 1200 yards per 3 minutes.

Niether German nor American subs have the "Manual" targeting options for me on SH4. No where is the thing to click on to do the measuring speed and so on. Wonder why as I have stock game.

Silent hunter 3 and 4 would be your best options. You can buy them through steam and can work on windows 7 and 8. Games are about ten bucks and if you want a true sub sim then its what you'll get. I'd say problem is if your looking for a sub game that's more arcady this wouldn't do as its like a slow chess game.

did you sink the destroyer with all the merchant ships or did you just manage to escape?otherwise, the destroyer must be very lucky avoiding the torpedo[es] by travelling at high speed after knowing them.

The thing i do, is that im going on the forward of the convoy and then i go back full to make sure they dont ramm me.

Perhaps by sinking the two warships, he might have alerted the rest of the convoy to the fact that there was a submarine lurking about, causing him to lose the element of surprise?

I just started SHIV and I'm having huge trouble not getting spotted by accompanying destroyers on the Attack Convoy tutorial mission. I guess their hydrophones always find me or something. Today I'll try going flank to my position (I was Ahead Slow because the tutorial said to do that).

aproach them on flank speed and you are doomed, you are going to be making so much noise with your engines he can hear you even further away. Try to not aproach closer than 1000meters and only raise you periscope to see what you need then lower it immediatly, dont keep it up for extended time duration.Periscope is used like a yo yo, up and down, up and down :)

lupahole Thanks for the tips. After some experimentation I found that approaching at flank initially was fine, but far out I would submerge under the thermal layer and go all ahead standard. This enabled me to get into position within 1000m without being spotted. I also managed to get pretty good at dodging sub hunters after I torpedoed their ships. I see all it really requires is silent running and use of the thermal layer.

DantehMan You may want to employ silent running when approaching where destroyers or sub hunters are and drop below thermal layer as you said. Keep in mind that while in silent running mode, you cannot do repairs or reload torps. So get where you need to be, wait, rise to periscope depth, raise periscope, fire, do a 180 and fire some more, and drop as low as you can. If you plan on just escaping at this point, you can leave silent running on unless you take damage. If they get near you, fire a couple of decoys and change course slightly and you should be good. I never come in close at more than 1/3rd speed (around 2-3 knots; the idea is get there first so you can be silent).

Just by looking at this video I think he has Trigger Maru Overhauled 2.5 (TMO 2.5) Mod installed. You can get in from subsim.

Maybe it's a silly question, but why didn't you first sink the two escort ships, getting rid of their menace, and only then attacked at will the merchant ones after? I don't play this game, I was just watching the video. It seems an interesting game, quite realistic.

smokemagnet Because first off, destroyers are very hard to hit. They're fast, and can detect torpedoes from far away. Also, he would alert the convoy and they would start Zig Zaging. Making them much more difficult to attack.

everytime there is a destroyer nearby, i rig for silent running and go usually around 200-240 feet down and they still get me! its like the game is too smart. is there a trick to evading a destroyer?

Colin Shahan They can't hear you if you sail (for lack of a better word) behind their propellers. And once they start laying depth charges, I go hard left at flank speed then quiet up. Also, it helps to go below the thermal layer, as again, they can't hear you that far down. The thermal layer is the red line on the deeper depth gauge. Around 350M I think.

I love this game but it all seems to complicated to me. Don't get me wrong because I would love to play full realism but I lack the proper training because there is no in depth tutorial. If I could do it the way you did man this would be my number one game.

+Kenneth Morgan it is not that bad when you think of it. Its trigonometry and Range/Time/Speed. You can even if you want make a full solution without target. if the torpedo takes 22 seconds to reach the target course. Find out how far the enemy goes in 22 seconds. (you can double if you want.. usually i do it for at least a minute) if it say 400. then set a mark 400 before your 90 angle. so when you shoot. the ship will run straigh in front of your torpedo without any aiming whatsoever. its very effective for stealth attacks since when calculation are well done you can set another mark wich i call the death counter and set a timer before firing and literally fire blind and hit.

You've given very little info to go on here but have you considered it might be the difference between imperial and metric measurements between the two games?
