What is Silent Hunter III?

I am speechless. I was playing SH4, U boat missions, patrolling the Indian ocean. Due to 50m visibility I was commencing a surface torpedo assault on a single ship. I launched a torpedo, waited for an explosion, but nothing happened. When I opened my TDC to check what was wrong, my jaw dropped, the torpedo did a circle and seconds later hit me in my forward torpedo room. Bulkhead crushed, instant heavy flooding. Got nearly sunk by my own torpedo

Hypothesis: the first centimeter wavelength radars would have been sent to night flying squadrons first as they have the hardest time locating targets. Just like you can spot aircraft visually further surfaced during the day, with the meter wavelength radar the daytime sorties could get close enough to spot their targets and then zero in by the Mk.1 eyeball. Conversely, for sorties flying at night the extra precision would help put the bombardier right on target so once the Leigh Light comes on you (the U-boat) is caught with your pants around your ankles. I suspect this would be one of the reasons Black May was so black; U-boat Kaleuns thinking the darkness was their cloak of invisibility, when in reality the ambush predators had upped their game and were able to swoop in on the unsuspecting boats with deadly accuracy. So your Biscay cross will be useful against the dated daytime squadron radar sets until the cm band sets are produced enough to be given to all aircraft. Then the escort vessels will get them, and things will be *very* dicey. Or at least that's what came to mind. Great to see you've been reading the comments are open to trying stuff, just makes me more glad I found your channel!

This was excellent. Me and a few mates used to do a hotseat version of the game using my paper chart navigation system, the boat being invisible on the in-game map. You’ve made me want to go back and do that again.

That Attack was textbook! Must have been a ammunition Transport. For roleplaying you may want to check out the "fight back" order that was issued on May 1st 1943.

Great video and thanks for keeping the sim alive. -If your torps hit forward of your aim point, your calculated target speed 1-2 kts too high (too much calc. lead), if they hit aft of your aim point, you're 1-2 kts too slow. So, make the correction in the computer should you desire to re-engage the same convoy. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Yeah! What a great episode! I had a bit of a break from youtube so I've watched 3 of your SH3 videos in a row and it feels great to be back! Keep em' coming, hope you'll survive till the end of the war and maybe even get to try try the XXI type U-boot. Also, a small tip: I've noticed a lot of times that when you raise your periscope and ask your hydrophone operator to report the nearest contact he responds: "No sound contact" Well as far as I know, that's just the game bug. You'll have to ask him before you raise the scope. Waiting for more SH3, and Wolfpack videos! Hope you're well and safe!

I want to thank you for this series, I've never played the game before and since I got a rec of one of the early episodes I got hooked on the game, never imagined how good such an old game can be. So far I am learning, trying, failing, missing by a bit, missing by two or more time the length of the boat and outright copying some stuff you did on my first "real" campaign, almost have enough renown to upgrade from the VIIB to the IXB around mid 1940. Again, thanks for the series, can't wait to see those fancy torpedos in action :)

Three questions you can look-at as you go along: 1) A sub commander has lots of help while planning an attack. (I note on SubSim that there are lots of options as to how much or how little 'help' you can arrange to get from the game.) Does the game cut you some slack by allowing longer periscope exposures, etc? I notice that your periscope discipline is way longer than IRL, where it was just seconds, then down. 2) When using the speed timing, can you lower the periscope a bit so it is just underwater while the ship passes along, then put it back up just in time to watch the stern and stop the timer? In other words, will raising and lowering the 'scope, only a meter (not all the way) throw off the aiming point? 3) In one attack in the Gulf of Mexico you hit a heavily armed merchant ship that refused to go down. It did, however, list to port dramatically, then sat there for hours. I was wondering why you didn't go around to the 'back side' of the ship, standoff a-ways, surface, then shell it? With a list like that, the main armament should not be able to train on your submarine. I guess I am asking whether or not the Game 'models' that? They model things like not being able to rotate and fire when the superstructure is in the way, but would a serious roll or list be modeled by the AI as well? Your series is fun to watch... I hope you make it to a Type XXI..! If you do get to a Type XXI, please discuss why it took so long to field them. They came out in late 1944, early 1945, yet months passed, and they did not get to sea until just before the end of the war in May! Thanks

Because the Type XXI had numerous problems with it's production. First ever, "modular" construction submarine, constructed by companies with little experience building submarines. While this did lead to a cheaper, quicker construction, it also meant the XXI was plagued with problems. And a ship waiting several months between being put to trials and being commissioned is common, it takes a while to test everything to make sure nothing will break under normal conditions (I think Bismarck had like 6 months of trials before being accepted)

Good Job. I try to get all torpedos in the water, before the first one hits.. A bit tricky to do, you need to slow down the first few torps, and speed up the last few, so they all kind of hit at the sametime. Well, good luck, waiting for the next one.

Nice start to the new patrol. Might have been some ammo in that ship you hit, the torpedo explosion was followed by a secondary one. I think you should have tossed out the steam torpedo in the direction of the convoy anyway just to see where it went. Your evasion tactics, plus decoys, are good enough to have eluded the destroyer.

Counter intuitive maybe, but radar can see just as well at night as during the day. Might as well move around on the surface when you can still see them in return at a reasonable distance. Its what you can't see that poses the most acute threat to you, because you can't react to it. I've got a hunch many kaeluns with your frame of mind met a grisly end on the Bay of Biscay during the nights of 1943.

Yeah it makes me nervous too. Like I said it is a trade off but I figured I would try it out. I will go back to surfacing at night to recharge my batteries once we net new radar detectors.

Loving it! Congrat's on exceeding the big 10K btw. I've been 'bingeing' on all your campaigns the last few weeks, absolutely gutted when the SH4 Pacific campaign came to such a sad conclusion. I'm hoping you will put out even more content to keep us isolated souls amused in these trying times (I am the sole carer to my 90 year old Mother, so you might imagine just how seriously I'm taking 'social isolation' ?.....). Might I suggest an extended session (to mark the much deserved 10K) of ANY campaign or mission you fancy with one twist; make multiple saves and REALLY GO FOR IT! Do some outrageously stupid attacks and really push the envelope of 'realism'. Just a thought. Many thanks for the entertainment and all your efforts. Pax vobis, Dude (but not to the dastardly foe!).

you can use the "dot" key and external camera will switch in range taget evrey time you press ".". works also for radar signals, if you get a radar signal you press dot key 2 times and it goes to the radar target. i know it's a kind of cheat, but it maybe could come back to you for editing purposes or to create some cinematic in the video :)

Eh, I mean if he's going to dive to avoid anyways it's honestly probably not a bad idea. I always want to see those aircraft coming in on him as he dives but understand all too well the urgency of not doing so, so having that to be able to see what he's avoiding would likely be of no loss.

By this time in the war, sailing into the North Atlantic was a suicide mission. I believe the average crew would survive 1 patrol, but not a second. Most of the top aces were either dead (Prien, Schepke, Endrass), POW's (Kretschmer & Schutze), or promoted to staff positions (Topp, Liebe, Lehmann-Willenbrock, ect...). Only Luth continued to do patrols until 1944, but he did long-range patrols into the Indian Ocean with a Type 9D. It didn't matter anyway, because allied industrial might far out paced the Kriegsmarine's ability to sink ships. BTW, Luth survived the U-Boat only to be shot dead by a sentry.

The FuMO 30 can come in quite handy in poor visibility. Especially when cruising in heavy traffic areas. It's great for detecting and intercepting lone merchants. I turn it on/off as soon as the have the WO fog notification. ASW aircraft can not operate in bad weather and hopefully my RWR will detect enemy's radar by the same time he has detected my radar beams. Still there is plenty of time to crash dive and escape. GR grids can be very rewarding if you have the patience to cruise at 8kts economical speed and disregard most of the targets on the way. Textbook kill on the grey large merchant though!

Hey man, ive been loving your videos for a while now, and ive been trying to git gud at the silent hunter games for longer. TBH the fact that i was mostly playing unmodded held me back, but now i bought SH3 and SH5 on steam, and ive installed SH3 with GWX gold on my new PC, so i figured now would be a great time to get back into a uboat! Could you please just tell me how you learned all this stuff (when to dive to what depth, how to perform an attack, etc) because tutorial videos on youtube arent all that great for an absolute beginner to sub simming IMO. Really love your stuff, keep it up and thanks!

A lot of what I learned is from Subsim.com. It is a really good resource and I definitely recommend checking it out. There is also a .pdf of the SH3 manual in the game folder. Give that a read too. It is basic but helpful.

Yup. There are Radar coatings that you can get later in the war. They are not available yet however.

WoW, you would of thought that those U-Flak subs would have would have been a problem in pairs ?, on their own yeah not really a real threat, but 2 or 3 must have caused a problem to aircraft. I wouldn't say no to a pair as escorts comming out of dock or docking a resupply vessel. Thank you, lovin the new episode, as every time i watch one i have to play mine, lol Talking of other subs, is it possible to engage or be attacked by one ? as it would be great if you could hunt one under water to

As much as I love SH3, I am horrible at it. I'm playing SH5 now, and I started a campaign in 1939 and I have 6 months left to hunt british coastal merchants and I've already downed slightly less than 300,000 tons. Although, if it wasn't for the deck gun that number would be much smaller. I can hardly hit the broad side of the HMS Aquitania with a torpedo.

They tend to explode pretty spectacularly in game.

I wonder how is possible that your external camera is not affected by Hsie fixes. I am playing with very similar mod setup and if I am moving underwater more than 4 knots my external camera is blurry same way like periscope. Did you edited something to fix this? Also one interesting fact about this radar you are equipped with. I read book about U-505 not long ago, and there was part where captain want to test this radar on one lone merchat whitch was too fast to catch up. It was clear day, no wind and yet this radar was unable to pick up this big ship. They estimated hers tonnage on around 10 000 BRT.

Hello, when I am using the arb GUI mod when I go to the radio messages it is in French and not in English so I have no clue what I'm getting doe my radio report messages , how do I fix this ?

What other mods do you have? Did you install the English submod?

@@Wolfpack345 I actually had the french fix mod installed with gwx I have the same mods installed as you do but I deactivated the french fix mod and now everything is working fine :) but also when your identifying the flags on ships do you have trouble with the resolution? Because I have the resolution fix mod and have my game set to 3840x2160 (my monitor reso) and I have to get somewhat close to do so
