How To Make A Live Edge Bench

In this video I show you how I made this live edge bench. I cover topics such as how to remove the bark from a live edge slab, how to cut mortise and tenon and glue up strategies for such a large project. And to finish it all off I show you how to apply a wipe-on poly for a durable finish that looks great.
This bench is made out of walnut with the side panels being spalted maple.

I really enjoyed this - I have a 3" thick slab of walnut that I will be making a sofa table out of. This gave me some more ideas of how to do it.

Looking good. I love when the sapwood from walnut is used on projects. It gives the top a defined edge instead of just being a chunk of brown.

Nicely done Sean. Try a flap disc on an angle grinder for the bark sometime. Quite messy, but gets the job done quickly.

Would it be possible to put the slab through a suitably sized thickness planer if I had one, rather than route the surface? Outstanding result. Thanks for sharing.

Sure. Just make sure you shim the slab so it doesn't rock by placing the slab on a long, flat board (like MDF or Plywood) and put shims under the gaps all the way around the slab to make sure the slab doesn't rock. Use hot glue to hold the shims in place and then slowly run it through the planer until it's flat. Then flip the slab over, referencing the flat surface and plane the other side.

thats a really nice bench I just wondered how do you know how thick the live edge slab has to be?

+lauwykske typically the slabs are milled 2" thick at the sawmill and depending on the condition of the slab and how much you remove, you can get close to 1 3/4" unless the slab is really warped.

This is my favorite bench design thus far. The curves and spalted maple panels really set it off.. I have a butter walnut slab & would like to use this design. Unfortunately, the link to the cut list (required by shop instructor) comes back as Error 404. Is there somewhere else the cut list is posted? TIA

Because the slab is larger than my planer. Plus I'd have to build a planer sled to flatten it since a planers job isn't to flatten lumber.
