Site Modeling in SketchUp

This video describes an architectural workflow for using SketchUp to build a digital site model with context buildings, aerial imagery, and 3D terrain. It covers the following:
1) Scouting the site using Google Earth and Google Maps (starting at 00:35)
2) Bringing a geo-snapshot of your site into SketchUp (starting at 05:20)
3) Importing existing 3D buildings (starting at 07:30)
4) Modeling missing buildings from scratch (starting at 10:00)
5) Making massing model versions of the photo-textured buildings (starting at 16:30)
6) Tracing roads from the aerial photo (starting at 23:47)
7) Working with a site that isn't flat (starting at 34:17)
8) Creating a new ground plane and street name labels (starting at 42:05)
9) Creating utility scenes to show different versions of the model (starting at 50:23)

Lots of great tips! I especially like the parts about using Google Earth to find existing 3D models at a site. I just recently started using the drape tool, and your tips about grouping were terrific.

Careful with default colour... suggest you always assign colours to every surface if you are going to use rendering software to ensure materials are mapped (named) correctly in that software, default color mapped to the group or component are not carried over

This is a great tutorial, however when I was trying to get the buildings from google earth, (i have a mac) i would click on the buildings and it was set up a little differently, but when i clicked the link for sketchup, it would say error 404 not found. Also, when i click on the buildings, the building information (height etc.) is not showing up.

Great Video. However most of the site context steps aren't working for me. Clicking on most buildings in google earth does not reveal the information shown in the video; no title of model or author. This means I can't find the nearby buildings for my model, in fact the components tab/nearby models is populated by very few buildings, even though the area I'm working in is fully modelled in legacy mode. (My site area is Viale Duilio, Milan, Italy) Also the 'add photo texture from google earth' function to a face in SU is all screwed up; the field of view angle is set to about 180 meaning the building face has such a large curved distortion that I can't grab it using the simple 4side polygon grab tool. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to applying these techniques to my context model.

For streets,, just create a rectangle group and then stretch and copy it over the overall street layout... then explode and group them into one street pattern and trim and radius the intersection as required... just reduce the fill transparency so you can see your reference image below

Wonderful Tutorial. I could've used this years ago. I would have liked to see you incorporate the front and back face(s) color/material GUI in the Entity Info pallet when you were explaining affecting a group's default color - That could help understand the concept a little better? The nearby models i click will download but not in place. Is there a setting that I am missing to make it do this. Once downloaded they are attached to my cursor. Thank you.

Is 3D Terrain available for Canada? I followed the instructions to load the hilly terrain around my house in Sketchup but the image remains flat as a pancake.
