Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. It’s October, which means, it’s the start of spooky season. With Halloween coming up, my mouth is watering just thinking about all of the candy I’m going to eat. But I always hear about how bad sugar is, so I wanted to find out why? Is sugar really as addictive as cocaine? Where does it come from? Are there hidden costs? And of course, the answers are darker than I could have ever imagined.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

That would be an interesting one to see, more educational than interesting. I wonder what else would go with it for it to be a Dark History. I’m guessing it must have something that’s (somewhat) accepted today, with the horror from the past. When did the mass sterilisation happen?

I’m a ‘chocoholic’ and always will be. I could eat a large Hershey bar every day. My mother was obese and all of us girls got that gene. Anyways, I started breaking Hershey bars in half and then later into quarters. I would put the remainder in the back of the fridge and walk away. I’m down to eating one small chocolate (like in Whitman Samplers) each week. And I don’t miss it. WHA????!!!! I tried eating the corner piece of cake with all the extra frosting at my grandson’s birthday party. I. Felt. So. Sick. I was literally eating from the veggie tray to feel better. Who IS this person????!!! P. S. I’m down 60 pounds.

I was born a sugar-baby lol! Yep, it's true my mom who binged on sugar while she was pregnant with me came from alcoholic parents! Funny though my mom did not drink, but she had a seriously sugar addiction. I've been trying to get off sugar my entire life, people who don't have a problem think it's a joke when you say you have a sugar addiction because they don't understand it. I one time went 25 days without sweets and I was clear headed, I felt calm and more relaxed, I slept well and woke up feeling happy (which is not normal for me) on day 26 I'm like this is great, I got this under control I'm going to eat a couple chocolate chip cookies no big deal! WRONG!!! That put me back on a major sugar binge that I've been on forever!! I'm definitely on a sugar coated hamster wheel still trying to find a way off 😬

Could we please get a dark history on Halloween to really get into the spooky season! I love Halloween as an adult but as a kid, my family believed it was the devils holiday so I was not allowed to dress up or go trick or treating. I recently purchased a prepackaged dessert and noticed that the sugar was listed as fair trade, and I've also been noticing more brands of sugar popping up with the fair trade stamp on it. This video is right on time as I was getting more curious as to what was going on the sugar industry. I knew that historically slavery drove the industry and was the primary contributing factor to owners being wealthy, but for some reason I didn't take into consideration that this was still a relevant issue. I'll definitely be more cognizant of brands of sugar that I buy for baking at home. Thanks, Bailey!

My colonizing ancestors worked for the Dutch sugar plantations in Brazil in the early 1600s. The slaves had an uprising and kicked them out. One of my ancestors stayed behind to fight and is buried there. The rest of them fled back to the homeland, but not before encountering a hurricane and Spanish pirates who stole everything but for their ships and the clothes on their backs. They finally made it back home, only to be told they weren't going to be taken in, because of religious persecution and the war with England, so they had to flee to the New World (America).. where England gave them some farmlands in current day New York City. I have maps of their farmlands in Manhattan and Brooklyn. England expected them to give up their harvests to pay off the land, and eventually took the farmlands back.. but then my family kicked their butts in the Revolutionary war for that lol but that's my family history with sugar and how we came to America because of it!

@@NosferaTTV I did, it felt amazing!, what a relief. It is almost impossible to have proof of your ancestry dating that long ago and in such detail, unless you are royal or something. There are not many preserved documents dating so long ago, most of such usually are stored in special conditions and are in museums. I could write very long commentary on how easy such traces can be lost, 400+ years is a long gap to cover, taking in consideration how much generations there were before, because of average living age etc.. but I am too lazy to elaborate because people who understand it or tried to find their ancestors already know it, others just believe everything in the Internet. Also, family stories many times are made up or hugely exagerated. And don't worry about me, I don't need fund me I don't live in murica.

Once I stopping soda alone dropped my weight drastically, I got rid of as much processed sugar as possible for a while and discovered that lots of my body pain went down too because sugar inflames nerves. I couldn’t maintain the elimination of sugar but now I know that my joint and body pain is largely due to sugar consumption.

History of the ancient trades are very interesting.. India initially didn't have chili peppers even though you think they would. They had really spicy black pepper. South America went and traded their chili for India's black pepper.. that's how each was spread to other sides of the world. An interesting thing about sugar and spices is also that sugar cancels spice. That's why Indian desserts are so super sweet. Their food is extra spicy so besides yogurt to cool down, sugar in the dessert afterwards cancels the burning heat of the spice in your mouth. It's handy to know, next time you have something so spicy you are in pain, just have something sweet like chocolate.
