The protective glove is a must when shooting darts. You have to fail only once and that's enough to cause permanent damage to your nerves. I have the old protective glove, but that new glove with the scale design looks cool. I'm currently shooting darts with naturals I have carved. I think frame hit isn't catastrophic with the wooden frame, because darts can penetrate it. I'm hammer gripping, because I find it is much safer way to shoot those.

You're not kidding about nerve damage, once you damage a nerve you're going to know it for the rest of your life. I lost all feeling in my thumb, ring finger and pinky on my left hand after a tablesaw tried to eat it, and though I still have all my fingers they don't do much of anything anymore (especially the pinky, the knuckles fuzed, it's curled up all the way). Playing Xbox? Not so much. Working with my hands doing hobbies? Better git gud with my right hand. Protect your nerves, your appendages don't work very well without them.

Since the body of the dart unscrews, why not have a miniture slide hammer that you can replace the body with and tap the head back out. I had one made out of a bolt to remove my arrow heads from tree stumps.It made recovery of the field tips of my arrows easier with no chance of bending the Aluminum arrow shaft.

For archery I use a burlap bag stuffed (very tightly) with wadded up polyethylene bags as a backstop. Properly packed the bag will stop an arrow from a hunting weight bow with only 2 or 3 inches penetration and the arrows can be easily removed. Been using these for years - they are light weight, weather resistant, inexpensive and don't damage the arrows. Because they are so light they can roll from the impact of an arrow (may not be a problem with the slingshot darts) so I usually hang the backstop from a tree limb with a couple of ropes.
@johnnygunz2300

For archery (even with my 80 lb compound) a good target for cheap is a burlap bag stuff full of plastic grocery bags. That setup works better than the expensive store bought targets.... Field tipped arrows are VERY easy to pull out and even with broadheads the target stops arrows very well. The burlap holds up with field points and of torn by broadheads you just layer with a second burlap bag. You can leave it outside and it dosen't get stinky like stacked rug targets. Plus it's very light and can be hiked with it into the woods or hung up easily. I think it would work great with these darts but you won't get that satisfying "thuddd" sound.

The s&m version glove, the ugly one, is metal plated under the leather. I've been using it, but nothing has gone wrong to date. Still, after seeing those accidents I'm glad I have it. I use a pinch grip, meaning nothing is exposed. I wouldn't use a thumb support grip like Chris does. That's what the guy with the thumb probably used. Oh, and a set of protective glasses won't go amiss either if the string doesn't release the dart correctly for some reason and the fecker comes back on you. Hasn't happened yet, but always keep Murphy's law in mind.

@@jojojaykay Kevlar is terrible for stopping cutting instruments (which those darts qualify as since they have sharpened tips). Kevlar works for bulletproof applications because the bullets are blunt, and deform further upon impact. I love the Snipersling darts, they are a good company to deal with too - good customer service and they always throw in a few freebies when I order darts from them. For a backstop I use a woven rubble sack stuffed (very firmly) with rags, it stops the darts with no damage to them and lasts quite a long time. The bags are under a tenner for a dozen. For information the Snipersling black bands shoot the darts at 180fps, which is 7ftlbs. I use a slingshot where the forks stick up a couple of inches above my fingers, so the dart isn't coming near. I also wear one of the leather and steel plate gloves you mention.

The fiestas of the old Tondo in Manila comes to my mind whenever I see this weapon. I have seen one picture of an unfortunate policeman, in one of the big local tabloids, with a freaking dart embedded in his forehead way back in the 80's. From what I can recall, I believe the dart has penetrated half of it's length inside his fore head. Not sure if he died later though as it was really customary for the local gangs there, to poison the tip of those darts to be used against the rival gangs or any poor bastard who happens to raise their ire. They soak the dart tip in muriatic acid which can be bought in local hardware stores.

Yea I'd really love to see the glove shot point blank with one of these, to see how much it protects. Something tells me those thin scales are gonna get wrecked and they're merely gonna reduce the damage, unless they're hardened high carbon steel, which somehow I doubt with it being 40 bucks and already tediously hand sewn individual scales. Plus, the guy that shot himself in the thumb, shot himself in a part that would've been unprotected anyway.
@darkcircle899
@darkcircle899 2 жыл бұрын
If you look in the comments someone has already do that test. However the point of the scales is not to take the impact head on they are designed to deflect the projectile and the design works very well. Scales were used for undress of years to deflect arrows from war bows with a draw weight in excess of 100lbs so I think they will do well with a dart from a slingshot.

I wonder how well these could be used underwater. They seem to have everything you’d need, high mass projectile, elastic propulsion, etc
@WrestlerMonkey123
@WrestlerMonkey123 2 жыл бұрын
I would imagine not well. Because of the resistance of the water, any deviation in the retraction of the bands would be amplified and not allow the darts to shoot properly. This is why harpoon gun bands run the entire length of the barrel so they have a "guide" to allow the projectile to increase in velocity without deviating.
@darrylkinslow5613
@darrylkinslow5613 2 жыл бұрын
The don't. Try shooting a gun underwater, the bullet goes about 2 feet and drops. A dart isn't making it off the elastic before it drops. That's why harpoon guns are fired from the ship deck, and not underwater.

My band setup will shoot the lead at about 250 feet per second (pretty zippy and about the power of a good 22 Cal. Airgun.... Maybe a tad more). It bruised my thumb and index finger real good! I got meat paws for hands so someone with less meaty hands could very likely shatter bones. I was lucky I didn't. I also shoot with tiny frames. If you step down to what most people shoot to target shoot which is like a 1/4 to 3/8 inch steel or maybe a marble the energy is far less and even skinny hands likely will get a minor bruise. Look at the black widow sling shot design and note the wrist brace built into the handle, this helps to steady the frame, keep it vertical and puts a lot more power into the shot. We used them for fishing, putting bait out really far! When the fish weren't biting we'd have sling shot battles with mates, firing carp fishing boilies, like a hard ball of condensed bait about the size of a marble, firing them across the lake at each other! A bit like a paint ball without the paint, travelling at like 1000ft / second lol they don't half sting when they make contact!! 😯⚠️💥😁 Safety goggles are optional lol

I made one of this when I was a kid. My dart was made up of a 4 inches nail with the head cut out and few feathers tied to it using a rubber band as stabilizer. A single band with single handle is more accurate than slingshot type. Worse experience is when the dart shoots backward because the hook didn't release on time. It's a real nightmare when you see the dart behind you and not on your target. Hahaha! But it was fun! We call it "Sima" here in the Philippines.

I picked up a set of the Mk II/III? (the red/pink ones) darts and the dragonscale glove a couple months back based on your suggestion, and they are an absolute blast! Gotta say though that I'm still working on building up calluses on my drawing finger and thumb - gloves might be handy! But man, these things are a lot more powerful than I expected. Hella fun!

I used to make (much more basic) darts like these when I was a kid that I fired with a modified black widow catapult. Still got the scar on the back of my thumb from one snapping as I fired it. Fun times!

Yikes! I can't hunt with a slingshot here so I think I'll steer clear of these (at least for now). I also have my doubts about that glove... Maybe an upcoming penetration test on it? Thanks for the video Chris.

they are actually quite great, due to the way you grip the sling, the scales are pointed torwards the target, and the risk of the bolt slipping under a scale is next to none, the scales will end up deflecting the bolt forward, and the most you'll get is a good old scare and the realisation "i think i've shot enough today"

I used to nick my auntie's big crochet hooks to make similar makeshift slingshot darts, using sticky tape for quills and a thick elastic band tied onto a bent up Y-shaped metal coat hanger. 👍🏻‍

It's come a long way since I was shooting standard dartboard darts with an old wrist rocket. (sketchy. you pinch the dart in the pocket at the grip, with the fins sticking Up. Probably not the safest thing I ever did, but it worked)

I use to make something similar as a kid. I would use a straw, sharpen a hair clip and a rubber band to hold it together. Then use another rubber band as the slingshot. Pretty effective and fun.

We used this slingshot for a very long time in the Philippines with just a stick of wood with rubber so that as the dart fly, it will just go over the stick unlink a slingshot where your hands will be on the way of the dart

Ever shot fencing staples with it? As a kid we used to make catapults out of old bed springs and elastic bands which slipped in back pocket with ease. The staples used to whistle as they spun through the air. Sometimes they would hit with the points and stick in deep but either way they were pretty lethal. Cheap cheerful and effective.

This is an old school gang weapon in the Philippines. The ammo used are the big nails. What they used to do was lay the nails on the train tracks, and when the train passes over it = instant ammo. So, you don't actually need those guns, the big nails are more cost effective and easier to create. Plus, no need to wait for a train, you can just use a saw and sharpen the tip more using sand paper.
