The folks who thought the nosing was a tripping hazard would probably also complain about tripping if anti-skid adhesive strips were in place. “It’s too sticky!” It looks great. I have occasionally used a contrasting color for nosing, on the bottom/top treads or the edge boards of a deck for a visual cue that hey, stairs are here. The contrasting color helps those with less than perfect vision realize what they’re about to encounter.

Yeah that was my thought exactly... nosing is very standard for stairs and if someone thinks it's a tripping hazard in this case it's because they've got some weird bias or just want to try and justify their incorrect opinion.

we got LVP, It really is a downgrade from the carpet on the stairs. We got a high end one with nice texture but it really was slippery. We use socks in our house. I was worried about my older family members and applied adhesive carpet strips on each step.

Interesting video. I put CoreTec LVP all thru our house a couple of years ago, including a stairwell. CoreTec sells color-matched nosing designed for its LVP, so the seam between plank and nose piece is flat, like the seam between planks. No tripping hazard at all. Like most LVP, CoreTec is textured so I've never slipped on those stairs despite going up & down them several times a day. Slick-soled Western boots, stocking feet, whatever... no problems. It's definitely less slippery than hardwood. CoreTec's a little spendy but it looks great, I could get matching nosing for my stairwell, and I hear it wears well. (Fingers crossed on the last one.)

I used vinyl plank on my brother in laws stairs several years ago and it has held up perfectly with 3 kids and 2 dogs running up and down it constantly. I used bostik adhesive that comes in a caulking tube and the stuff is amazing. We also use it for windows and doors or anywhere else you need a good seal. Also I mitered similar nosing for an inside corner and it has held up great going down into a recessed living room. Also were in mid west Florida and I've never had any movement problems with anybof the miles of flooring I've done all over the county. Im not sure the stuff does expand and contract enough to matter

The job looks great! Nice touch with the crutches. I have noticed some stairs with that vinyl on them can be slippery, a little common sense and caution will avoid problems. Overall, thank you for this video and the whole stairway looks great.

I did the same project. Agree on all counts. Def peel the foam off. I would hate for a plank to loosen up b/c the foam is glued to the stair and not the plank. It would be really annoying to fix. Second you WANT there to be an edge on the bullnose. It is not a tripping hazard. It actually helps with the slipperyness of the stair (yes they are slippery). That edge gives a tactile edge you can feel and catch of you were to actually slip. I think that edge is definitely supposed to be there. If it were not I think my stairs would feel MORE slippery. All that being said fair warning this project was really hard. All my treads and risers were different sizes (cement) and nothing is square so every plank had to be ripped and custom cut. Also some treads and risers weren't level so it took some special effort to get them to glue down properly without rocking or clicking if you stepped on in certain spots 😡 It took forever. I didn't even do the stringer bc that is also a really hard thing for a dyi-er to do. Especially with the different size steps.

Thanks, we have used the same flooring throughout the house but have left the stairs carpeted. It looks like quite a job to update it like on video. The capping is the expensive part. About $100 for an 8 foot section. 🇨🇦
@jamescrain2
@jamescrain2 9 ай бұрын
CoreTec's nosing was pretty pricey too, but not $100 expensive. You can get 8-foot section of that for ~60 USD. (But maybe 60 USD is equal to $100 Canadian... I was surprised by the exchange rate when we went to Quebec last month.)

Good day sir hope all is well. This question is not related to this particular video. It’s about underlayment on a subfloor. You used a very good product and I’m finding it to be very pricy, just wanted to know if regular spruce plywood would be a good option or do you have any suggestions. Much appreciated, thank you.

Shannon off topic but if im interested in stripping my wood stair treads there stained and urethaned what sander do you recommend to do this job i was considering the dust and how to get into the corners any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements Ай бұрын
You could try strippers for the urethane since on older stairs they can pretty thick to sand off. and then sand the stain with an orbital sander and maybe a detail sander in the corners. You can sand the urethane also but start with like 60 grit .Dust will be an issue with the sanding, keep a shop vac running and close by will usually help a bit. If you can put up a plastic dust screen to work in and wear a mast for sure either way.

My only contention with vinyl is I don't like it. Great for a rental unit because of cost and ease of repair, but not in my home. As far as slip, unless you're running carpet you run that risk with every other material (except rough stone or tile).

Slippery-wise, there might be something about the round nosing rather than the material itself. I remember specs. , might not in Canada, limits the rounded/ beveled edge of the step to not exceed a certain radius/diameter, few mills
