I am interested in the Catch 110HDII for a friend who is wanting to get into kayaking. She wants an affordable pedal drive and something she can put on top of her car. Being diligent about research I checked out this video and was pleased that Pelican responded favorably and quickly. That all being said @16:03 your comment was perhaps honest, but you will not gain any points with Pelican with a "backhanded compliment" like that. You might want to be a little more choosier with your verbiage.

I appreciate your honesty with the situation. It sounds like they have great warranty service. I almost bought one when they came out, but then I end up keeping my old Outback. Even Hobie had a recall on their 180 kickup fins, but it was addressed pretty quick. I got the PA360 and haven't had any issues with the 360 drive yet. Knock on wood. I would hope there aren't any issue for what I spent on it, but it's only a matter of time. I do think Pelican has great starter kayaks and price well. I'm interested to see if the Hobie parts will work better on the drive.

Just one question I hope you know the answer to - can it be repaired with Hobie parts ? Good video. I have this kayak and I love it so far. Needless to say I had some problems. I should’ve known better, but have now learned to go through anything mechanical before you put it on the water. Loosening the cables made the drive way smoother and I believe takes some of the torque and stress out of the drive system. I also lubed every metal axel and spine in the drive with racing grease before tightening everything down, as I use this primarily in salt water. After this I make sure to PM and I haven’t had any issues in multiple times on the water.

@@SlotCityFishing well I have since bought a Hobie. I kept having rudder issues where the cables would slip off the steering pulley and loosen leaving me without steering. I probably could have found a fix but it kept happening on the water, ruining my day fishing, and causing me stress on the water. I will say the new drive they sent me worked much better, but I sold it to upgrade. The Hobie tracks better, is faster on the water, steering is better. It’s just way smoother on the water.

Good video! I head the squeaking on the video, Pelican suggests lubricating it with some marine spray lube. I did that and it is now totally quiet. Also, make sure to adjust the cables if you feel the pedals don’t glide easily, it makes a huge difference. Pelican International’s KZfaq page has all the how-to videos. My mast broke inside the female end while I was out, Pelican sent me a new drive within 5 days and I’m in Texas. Their warranty and customer service is amazing. Hopefully this will translate to their product and they will make the necessary improvements to have a high quality kayak. As you said, for the price and what you get, this is an unbeatable fishing kayak.

Glad I found your channel! Perfect timing since I'm looking at buying the Pelican 110 next week. I live in Ponte Vedra about two miles from the Intracoastal. I fish from shore now after I sold my center console but miss being on the water. Ironically, I was out on my friends 14' Hobie last week and the drive failed, not at that post where yours broke, but the other side. Fortunately my bud towed me back before I floated down to Vilano. As a first time owner, looking to spend about $1500, I'm guessing you would say this is a good beginner kayak? I'm also not a big guy so I figure I won't be stressing the equipment very much. My only other option in that price range was the Hobie Mirage but I'm kind of partial to the design and setup of the Pelican. Any opinion on that? If you're at all interested, I also have a small KZfaq channel called "Finding Saint Johns", focused on history, veteran interviews, and local business. I hope to see you on the water soon.

so if you put the 2009 mirage drive into a hobie and compare it to the hydradrive.. will you have the same issues ?... so if you take the pelican 130 and put in a mirage 180 drive.. then compare it to a hobie outback.. thats apples to apples.. your still saving money new with pelican and a 180 bought after market.. thats like 2300.00 .. vs 2700 for an outback.. what are your thoughts?

man i know everyones situation is different but if you are already spending that kinda cash a hobie camo compass comes with a 180 drive and its about that price new. buy once cry once. i had 5 hobies and never had a single issue with any of them.

Great video. Did you ever get Hobie parts and try to use them on the Hydrive? Also, I saw another review that claimed that the Hydrive masts were brittle, maybe it was just a bad batch. As a result of the brittle mast he said that they should NOT be loctited in place. They tend to snap at the connection and leave the broken bit flush or inset into the sprocket.

Buyer beware: The shell isn't bad, stable enough, comfy; I've caught a ton of fish in the this boat. After only 70 miles (6 months) the set screw that holds the rudder cable has chewed through the cable ($40 replacement from Canada took a month,) go get 1/16" stainless steel cable from your hardware store. Now the Hydryve (direct copy from Hobie) has failed, the idler cable snapped. No replacement from Pelican except a complete "core" replacement ($369 BUT isn't available for purchase from Pelican or any retailer....which pelican site directs you to "find a retailer.") Pelican will sell you a complete Hydryve replacment for $550 (which I assume will take another month to get)....have contacted Pelican countless times in the past month, no reply. Take your money and the money you will have to spend and buy a Hobie or AT LEAST plan to buy a Hobie Mirage drive (parts are inexpensive, readily available, and fast to get,) fits right in the Pelican chassis.

Appreciate your video. Thanks. Today was my 4th time out with my 130HD and the hydradryve broke. While pedalling, I lost most of the resistance. When I pulled the drive, one fin(blade) was flopping around, seemingly unattached from the horizontal shaft. The other fin was fine. I started a warranty request claim. I hope my experience ends up as good as yours. Love the kayak. Question the mechanics of the HD. Thanks.

I would definitely give the Pelican company a chance to redeem and develop itself .As a businessman for nearly 30 years,i have seen that there is nothing that stagnates the economy so effectively as when a company have the monopoly over a certain segment in the market.Competition has always been the effective tool to upper your performance in the process of keeping a healthy marketshare, even if it meant dropping your product price.Well done Pelican for bringing the fight to the big guys, and in the process helping the less fortunate.
