Interesting video as always. Cards that can slot in: - Teachings - Meeting of Minds (considering the high amount of creatures in the battlefield) - Battle Screech - A copy of Bojuka Bog - Ghostly flicker (helps on multiple situations, using lands or bouncing journey) - Strands - Stonehorn

Yup, specifically was missing strands and stonehorn in that league. At least 1 stonehorn is nice to have. Some of the other cards like bog seem a little sketchy

@@SnapBolt The rationale for Bog is to give more options for land bouncing + works well with flicker and enables teachings flashback. It’s not so uncommon to see in these kind of decks. I think the deck needs more instant speed spells in general. Adding a copy of a couple instants like flickers, strands, MoM, gives more options for teachings and for archeomancer retrieval.

I've had this sleeved up and played for a few years now. Was a menace at my locals until I joined the dark side and played Kuldotha red 🤣 love seeing the deck again on the channel.

Glad to see you are back, Max, and I like to see how you analyze alternative plays during your turns. I have been following your plays with this deck for a while and I agree that Soul of Migration might just not be strong enough for the meta today. I also feel the deck could benefit from either more attacking power (a better finisher creature) or a way to search for lands and thin the deck (trinket mage maybe)? Although the name of the deck is obviously "evoke", you might wanna take a look at other mechanics such as: Evoke: there are some decent green creatures, but then you would need to make the deck Bant; Prototype: unfortunately the best creatures are green, red and black, but since you can ephemerate, you can cast the cheaper version and end up with the bigger creature. Disturb/Unearth: making the deck more graveyard focused, you could use cantrips to put creatures in the graveyard, bring them back to the field and either blink or have them die and angelic renewal. Echo: is another mechanic that is somehow "similar" to evoke, but since it is an old mechanic the creatures are relatively weak and mostly not worth playing.

For sure. Al things to consider. I feel like Boros initiative plays a similar game plan to evoke but is more suitable for the current meta and plays newer stronger cards. Instead of trying to make this work, it’s probably better to just jam a deck like that!

@@SnapBolt, take a look at the "Eagles from the North" card from the new set and see if you like it. Cycling + reanimation might help the deck, and you can also blink it to pump 1/1s. Another suggestion would be to replace 2-3 cantrips with faerie seer. You would lose the draw but you need more creatures in the deck.

I've been playing something similar to this list for ages! I've personally not been running counterspells as it's often really hard to hold counterspells up with how mana hungry the deck is, militia bugler is there instead as often it's good to have a decent blocker early on while you're setting up a combo turn

@@SnapBolt I saw a video from CosmicCharles taking it to the next level, and I’ve been brewing with it since. Me and another brewer worked on a Persist Mutate build utilizing Greatsword for constant recursion. I can’t wait to see it played!

For the affinity match ups why not a couple of the hydros over dispel for the galv blast and munitions

I think jeskai could be good too with flautgrinder against tron and auras and ingot chewer against artifact decks

28:15 I think it should have been crossroads second instead of Archaeomancer. You knew you were playing Migration the next turn so you don't need the mage and can play the tap land instead. And then you would have been able to play Cleric the turn you drew it! 😮

Yea, it should have been, you are 100% correct. At the time I was thinking I don’t need the land and maybe I would play mancer but looking back that doesn’t make any sense. I had to play soul next turn to stabilize - good line

one of the things that make me really sad about pauper right now is that we don't have a dedicated uw control deck, familiars is the closest imo, but still isn't a proper control deck. Between that and slivers having a hard time in the meta right now, I'm having a hard time enjoying the game, but I really liked your list, Max, always love to abuse mulldrifter

Yea, we don’t. All we really need is one good white removal spell and UW Control should be somewhat viable. It’s also difficult to brew because the top decks are so efficient and resilient. They just draw so many cards

@@SnapBolt yeah it's very hard to have a long term gameplan when all the top decks of the meta are already so grindy, even the red aggro decks have efficient ways to play a long game and trade resources. I also think one of the key missing pieces is a good white removal spell, would love to see path downgraded

Needs Mana Tithe :D But seriously what about Strands or Dignitary to slow the opponent's chipping away at life total? (EDIT: I typed this before you got to the end of the vid and discussed this very thing!) I do think Boros Ephemerate/Initiative is better positioned right now. Been wondering about Mardu Ephemerate/Initiative just to get a little bit better removal into the Boros deck. Thoughts?

Splashing black for bridges, Cast Down (although I wonder if the Ring will knock it off the top of the 2 mana kill spell pile?) and some Duress in the sideboard sounds worth testing. I can see the info from Duress helping us navigate when to slam Monarch/Initiative, and Cast Down + Bolt/Blast being our removal means we’re solid vs flickers and ninjas. A shame we can’t take advantage of Thorn and Strands in the same deck. Fumes could also be an “upgrade” of our Breath Weapons. Beyond that, I’m not sure what black cards we want to splash, since white creatures are important for Strands and our mana needs to support Wildfire on 2. P.s. It might not be crazy to try Snuff Out as a way to protect Monarch/Initiative, considering we can fetch Swamp with Wildfire. This could definitely be to risky and/or too much life though, just a thought.

I know that ''thinning'' the deck with ash barrens sounds okay but it doesn't changes anything. You rather have ash barrens to brainstorm with it than cycle just to ''thin'' your deck. This is a misconception.

I understand that concept - but it’s not like our decklist is something like 4 brainstorm 4 ponder. I think even at one point in the league we I had already cast brainstorm when I used my ash barrens but I don’t recall exactly

@@SnapBolt Yeah, I was talking about the game that you were flooded with blanks in hand, I would still prefer to keep the ash, since statistically it wouldn't make any difference.

@@MrFereshteyeh guess I’m going to play devils advocate here because that’s not exactly true. If we expect the game to continue for a fair number of turns, it will slightly improve our draws. The chance to draw a spell only increases slightly per draw (by a percent or two) but over the next 10 or 15 draws it could make a difference. Obviously if we topdeck ponder or brainstorm we wish we had the ash barrens so there’s still give and take but I think there is upside to cycling ash barrens in positions like that sometimes

@@SnapBolt Fair enough, for instance, if you have 4 lands in a 40 cards deck you have 10% of chance into drawing a land, but if you have 3 lands in a 39 cards deck the chance drop to 7,6%. So in your case where we're planning to grind for another 10 or so turns it may be the correct play. Also worth noting that your deck have so little basics, in a deck with still 12-14 basics the math may not be worth it. But, again, fair point, it's good to discuss with people who understands the game we love. Thank you!

Man.. affinity really needs bans.. people praise dust to dust but it isn’t that great, and they can come back so easily. Both you and luffy played very well, you just lost because his deck is stupid. Ggs.

Yea, I once cast 5 Dust to Dust against affinity and still lost
