Snow, a Christmas Curry, and some bloke called Andy Beavers: Kinder Scout, the Peak District

With a weather forecast predicting snow and subzero temperatures, I headed for the Peak District for a wild camp at Kinder Downfall on the Kinder Scout plateau. Joined by my dad ‪@overthehillwildcamper‬ and special guest ‪@AndrewBeavers‬, we set off from Edale and followed the Pennine Way up Jacob's Ladder before pitching our tents close to Kinder Downfall.
I was in my SilNylon Duomid and Andy was in his SilNylon Trailstar, both by Mountain Laurel Designs, and my dad was in his X-Mid 2p Solid Inner by Durston Gear.
Once pitched, I used my Trangia 25 to cook the British Christmas classic 'Turkey Curry'. A Trangia Masterclass in Snowy subzero conditions, just the way we like it.
We woke up to around 4 inches of fresh snowfall, an absolutely fantastic winter camp.

Thanks to that Mr Beavers for pointing me in the direction of your channel and your dad's. I've really been enjoying working my way through all your videos. You choose some cracking walks in a range of different places and not always the usual circuits, which is refreshing. And the trangia masterclasses are a master stroke! Some great ideas there and shows what can be done with minimal equipment... it's almost as if you've got a qualification in cooking or something! 🤣 You're so subtle about it, no one would know! 😆Look forward to more videos.

Fresh cooked scran beats a dry meal any day of the week. Might have to dig out my Trangia and give it a go. Top marks on a great camp.

Cheers Andy. Yeah, proper cooking on the Trangia is way more enjoyable than the dehydrated slurry. Unfortunately it’s a lot heavier n’all 🥵 All the best mate 🙏

@@belowaveragewildcamper I've stopped taking dry meals and started bagging up leftovers (like beef stroganoff and pasta) in mylar sealable bags. Proper boil in the bag scran. I've got about 5 meals in the freezer ready to go. ATB

OMG, that hike is so reminiscent of walks I did on Kinder Scout over 40 years ago and in similar conditions. I learned my mountain craft up there. Well remember witnessing a Kinder Downfall ‘upturn’ which was amazing. Great video, thank you.

What a great camp in winter conditions. It seems like the nvq level 1 has paid off as Andy loved that. If you didn’t do a masterclass on a camp then it wouldn’t be a camp. Loved this camp.

Kinder is my local mountain, and I have spent many nights up there over the years. I have some favourite spots on the Western edge where I can hide off the main paths, yet look out over Manchester, which as dusk drifts into night, actually looks amazing. It's also a nice feeling looking out over potentially tens of thousands of people, knowing you are on your own, or possibly just a handful of people within a mile or so of you. I have also seen countless people up there totally ill equipped for the rugged terrain. I wouldn't necessarily class Kinder as a killer, but it warrants more than crocs, flip flops, and kids in little green froggy wellies. I often see people without a pack, they have absolutely nothing with them.

Yeah, it’s a special feeling being alone at night in the hills, especially within sight of a major city all lit up. The contradiction Is that although I love the solitude of these remote areas, I’m fully aware that I’m a towny and the reason I love spending my free time in the remote mountains is because I’m a towny. 🤣 Mind boggling how complacent people can be. Never underestimate how ruthless Mother Nature can be eh. Thank you for commenting mate, it’s much appreciated. All best 🙏

i tell what is fantastic addition the new non stick plate it enables you two cook pizza using the plate as a frypan lid also you can use it as a second frying pan (ive checked this with trangia )

Great video! Not sure about the mesh inner though in the snow, I figure everyone is harder than me. Major effort making that dish outside in those conditions. Next level!

Hi Dave, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. 🤣 I usually go with no inner at all in the winter. Only took the inner to protect me from any spin drift that might have sneaked in. The cooking helped distract me from the conditions. I felt sorry for my Dad and Andy having to watch me. All the best mate 🙏

Hi. I have used the 2 pole option a couple of times. In my experience it’s not as stable as the one pole option and so that puts me off using it to be honest. I also think that although it does allow a bit more room In the centre of the tent, this doesn’t really make any difference whether you’re tall or short. My preference is the one pole Option. However, next time I’m out in the Duomid, if the weather forecast is favourable, I’ll try use the 2 pole option and talk about it in The video. All the best 👍
