Beyond the usual tourneys and traditional rugby heartlands lies the sport's new frontier- Major League Rugby. So with the ambitious young US league growing year on year, what should we all know about Major League Rugby, and why should we all care about rugby's awesome new outsider?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can one day achieve my true dream off watching the New England Free Jacks in person.
Credit to Matt McCarthy and Rugby Wrap-Up for the interview footage with Doug Schroninger, who I negligently forgot to credit at the end. Please check out their channel if you’re after more very fine MLR and US rugby coverage!

I'd be down for it. I'd actually like it if MLR took a page out the NHL's playbook, and found a way to get more teams in Canada. Because I believe Canadian Rugby needs just as much help as USA does, and lets face it, the USA/Canada rivalry is the gift that just keeps on giving.

Also, one other big thing to mention is that not only are Eagles being developed for the national team but Canadian players are being given pathways, many rising star South American players, nearly all with test match experience in T2/T3, are being given pathways...MLR is a proving ground that just didn't exist for Americas rugby players. They provide a legitimate reason for feeder leagues and conferences underneath MLR to exist, both domestically and internationally. And that can only bode well for club and grassroots rugby as a knock on effect. Americas rugby has a home and World Rugby knows it now. It's why they did the combine and will do more here: there's just too much talent being left to rot NOT to invest here.

Abso-bloody-lutely. A legitimate MLR could lead to a legitimate Americas Rugby Championship. Maybe it's possible for Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile to get 8 franchises together for a competition and create a genuaine Americas rugby scene to go with Europe and Asia-Pacific. In my dreamworld South Africa goes it alone and somehow gets a 10 team competition going with Zimbabwe, Namibia and kenya franchises but obviously that's just a dream. Either way, a solidified Americas scene, north and south and with the ARC, could create a new rugby world. Imagine it, club world finals of 3 Super rugby, 3 Heineken Cup and 2 MLR teams in 10 years. There's so much scope on how rugby could reform into an international season, and I didn't even mention Japan which could join Asia-Pacific or continue to stand alone as well. a very exciting time for rugby.

I think MLR has a shot to be a mid-major sport in the US we have a lot of successful mid-major sports in the US, I think it can get to the level of MLS , the attendance is not close to MLS now however MLS attendance is quite inflated many tickets are free or sold at very low prices and after two and half decades it never could get much of a TV or streaming audience what it did have going for it was a couple of billionaires who invested hundreds of millions of dollars trying to make a Association Football league work in the US/Canada because that means $$$. MRL doesn't have this but what it does have is a very unique sport that should blend in well to American culture.

wait till you hear about you hear about Suzuki Sidekick. He used to break bottles over his head at rugby frat parties, but I think he's gonna go far in MLR.

Squidge, I'm a South African living in the states. Do you have any videos explaining the basics of rugby? I've got a girlfriend who knows NFl, so trying to explain rugby over here isn't easy😅 love your video, hope to see you in France!

One little thing that made me laugh was the head coach of the Seawolves being on sports radio for an interview. He was talking about how the lads do a great job as ambassadors for rugby by always cleaning up the shed after a match.. but since the coach is a Kiwi, the radio host thought he had just swore on live radio 🤣🤦‍♂️but it's great that they had him on, and looking forward to making it 3 shields in a row next year for my Seawolves!
