it’s the same reason why we seek youtube shorts and other similar distractions you know that large looming problem that you’re currently worrying about? ignore that for now and work on some easier problem instead, that way you at least get something done and might even work up the motivation to get some progress on the large issue. and if not, you still made progress on something useful and that’s definitively a win or if you don’t have the motivation to do anything now, you can make a plan for the future and increase future you’s chance of success with dealing with whatever you planned

Learning meditation was the biggest lifesaver for me. Also learning that comfort and a lack of boredom are outright poisonous things. By being bored doing hard things becomes an easier alternative. For instance I have a comic I need to draw the manuscript for, but that's hard work, if I got a hundred easier things that yield dopamine I'll do those, but if it's a choice between lay catatonic or draw I'll draw any day of the week. It's the same reason why you read books when you are traveling, because you are away from all the easy distractions. It's for this reason that I want to build a studio, have a space exclusively for work.

Hey, first off thank you for sharing. I learned a lot from this short and the replies like yours. I want to try out your technique, but my only concern is what happens after I meditate? If I'm trying to stop myself from indulging in cheap pleasures... I'm scared that I'll impulsively jump back to the cheap pleasures instead of doing the hard work after sitting with my boredom. What do you do to get yourself to draw that comic after sitting with your boredom... or does it actually get easier to chose your comic after "riding the wave" as Dr. K said?

@@Xaryn essentially by becoming bored you will prefer to do the hard thing than just sit there. So for instance sit with your thoughts for 30 minutes to an hour, then don't pull out your phone or hop on the computer. Leave your only options as do the goal or do nothing.

I constantly stimulate myself all the time because, if I don’t, I get very intense depressive and anxious thoughts and ideas that might not have any standing grounds of actually happening, but all the bad thoughts *are* logical and that’s what makes them that much more worse

the thought might seem logical but the psyche often is not logical. Your intellect is playing tricks on you and makes it seem like it's right. Listen to your intellect but don't believe it. You're addicted to stimulation and you should slowly start reducing that stimulation. A "dopamine detox" and spending time in nature might be helpful Get away from your phone. I've come to realise how much I have been distracting myself. Whether it's drugs, food or video games. Nothing wrong with hedonistic pleasures from time to time, but it always feels very empty, especially when it's at the detriment of what is really important in life. Our mind and body follows certain mechanisms, it's not random. To be more aware of some of these dynamics, have been immensely eye opening. 🙏

Tbh your body will adapt and make you bored. You can flood your brain with an infinite amount of stimulation but eventually it just all becomes white noise. You can be playing 4 games at once, listening to music, and having a conversation and your brain still go "god I'm so fucking bored". Been there done that. Your brain effectively works off tolerance. Like ie you can smoke weed every 2 hours and it will fuck you up at first but after a couple months you're not even able to get stoned anymore and you feel nothing. Same for stimulation, if you haven't played a game in a long time its the most engaging thing ever, but if it's your 30th day of logging 10 hours ut just feels like a job or a chore and you'd rather do anything else.

I also do this, it makes my mind calmer and less fragmented. I don't think it's a problem that your mind plays music. Maybe your mind also has to process the music. Maybe your brain will get bored of the music an other thoughts will become more dominant.

I've gotten to the point we're I actually enjoy being bored or to phrase it better I've learned to tolerate the feeling of being bored because when I'm bored I just use my internal dialogue to tell myself that all I'm doing is sitting with myself and I watch and observe my thoughts also I ask myself what am I right now and if I'm sitting down I'll tell myself what I am in this exact moment is a human sitting, nothing more nothing less because I can't be anything else in that moment other than what I am

As someone with ADHD, I am chronically bored. Doesn't matter if I'm at work, at home, or with friends. Life is boring. Makes motivation really hard to stir up when nothing actually stimulates you that much. ADHD is basically chronic understimulation, so this makes sense. The body attempts to compensate through hyperactivity - stimulation using the body or daydreams. This results in long term issues of course, because the mundane aspects of life become difficult to force yourself to do, and because the stimulation isn't there, the reward for doing things isn't there, which means that habits don't form correctly either. Try being a fully functioning adult where you have no passion to do anything and are not mentally rewarded for doing things. ADHD is a horrible disorder and I really wish more people understood the depth of the disorder instead of passing it off as laziness or lack of discipline.

If nothing ever interests you, that sounds more like apathy or maybe depression. You could also be overstimulated by input, like f.x. constantly listening or watching videos. Many people with ADHD are very interested in specific things, often for a short amount of time, until they find a new thing. I get bored of things very fast, and in the end, I chose a job that I can do no matter what mood I am in. For me, that could be horticulture or maybe forklift driving.

Why is it important to listen to internal thoughts over seeking outside simulation?
@HenryZhaosTextbook
@HenryZhaosTextbook Жыл бұрын
It helps you gain awareness of how your mind and body are signaling you to think and feel. And that enables you to be more deliberate in how you act on those thoughts and feelings, instead of giving in to impulse and spiraling out of control. In other words, you can be more in control of yourself if you pay attention to what’s pulling the strings internally. Outside stimulation isn’t bad though, it can be useful. However if you lean on it too heavily you become numb to it, and it becomes difficult to enjoy anything. Balance is key.
