The fairlead needs to be up above the top link and stood on end, not horizontal. That will keep the cable feeding to the center of the winch. And the winch should be tilted up at least 45*. This will aid in pulling the wood . Then weld a pair of hooks on the frame to hold the chocker chains and eliminate the chock load to the winch.

@loganhurst992 thanks for the reply. I just had my woods thinned to sell some timber and some of the tops are along a steep slope. I bought a very nice set of logging grapples by uniforest but needing a winch to retrieve those tops. Uniforest makes the winching/puling setup but kinda pricey. Trying to research any alternatives.

@flyingace1057 I don't know what will work best for your situation but sometimes I get carried away with a $100 solution to a $10 problem. Consider what you can safely do (and enjoy) while accomplishing the task. I have found that I can tackle 99.9% of my pulls with a little extra chain/cable and a better angle. Maybe a long cable and a snatch block anchored to a tree can get you everything you need.

Your weak link there is the battery on your tractor. Electric winches draw a ton of amps. If you have hydraulics on your tractor, a hydraulic winch would give you more pulling power with less load on your machine. Nice build, though.
@SoatMon

I agree. I originally was looking for a hydraulic or PTO winch but the cost was prohibitive for my use. I will mainly us it to lean a tree the right direction while cutting it down, it will do very little if any skidding. Thanks for the input and comment!

How many batteries do you have to work with that winch ? An hydraulic winch is more expensive but if you work with the winch is the best choice, it's different if you use it rarely and for not long time, but considered all it's a good job!
@SoatMon
@SoatMon 4 жыл бұрын
As you say I use it rarely and for short periods. Mainly when I have a tree that might hit a building when I drop it. A hydraulic would be a much better choice but I couldn't justify the expense.

I'm in the process if building one myself I got a hydraulic winch and was wondering what thickness of steel you used it looks like from video where the winch bolts is 5/16 angle and the plate where pins for 3pt go is 3/8 am I correct? And is the steel you used heavy enough or would you do something different if you had to do it over again

It has worked out well. I don't use a separate battery, I use the tractor battery and only use it a short period of time when I use it. For several hours I think you would want hydraulic. I use it mainly to pull trees away from structures as I cut them and then skid the trees with the tractor.

Looks good. Do you like your quick connect brackets on the lower bar ends of you 3 point hitch? They make a version of them that would fit my small ford powermaster. But I didn't want to buy them just to try them out. What do you think about them. Hope you are having a good week end we are finally getting some rain now. :-)
@SoatMon
@SoatMon 6 жыл бұрын
I do like them, they are called Pat's quick hitch. There is a bar that is sold separately that I originally bought and used for awhile but I forgot and left it on a few times which caused it to get bent. Over time I decided to just use a bungee cord to pull them together and the turnbuckles to set the distance apart. I have several implements that require a different width so this works pretty good. I can drop and pick up implements that are the same width and quickly adjust to those that aren't. You of course still have to get off to attach the top link but it eliminated all the jockeying around to get the draw pins lined up. If you aren't perfectly lined up you just shove the implement back a little and it will line up against the brackets. One draw back is that it puts your implement farther out the back. I had to buy a new top link because mine would not extend far enough for some implements. I lost a piece to it at one point, emailed them to find out how much it would cost and next thing I knew I had one in the mail. They were worth the money especially since I am getting too old to wrestle around with 800lb farm implements. When you get trough with the rain, send it our way!

I am wanting to build something similar for Bobcat 753 for cleaning up fallen trees from our water way at the cabin. Am not trying to extract a entire tree with one pull as I will section it. Trying to get a handle on the size hydraulic winch to use. Some of the new product on the market for skid steer application are using 7,500 or 10,000 lb units with 1/2" cable. I am trying to get a handle on what size to look for. Also, is the rating criteria for all manufactures standardized? Thank you to all who have some insight as I am mechanically inclined, but new to hydraulics.

Also, I failed to compliment the design. Thank you
@SoatMon
@SoatMon 2 жыл бұрын
1/2 inch cable should be fine, it depends on what you are pulling and if it get hung up on something. The hydraulic winch should pull close to what it says if you supply it with the correct pressure and volume. The winch should give you a rating for each wrap of the cable, getting less with each wrap.

@tedfarkas
@tedfarkas 4 жыл бұрын
I plan on building one similar to yours, I am curious, though, how useful is the grader blade in your application, ( that is pulling a leaning tree before cutting it down): since you have to put the chain or strap 10-15 feet high on the tree for good leverage, wouldn't that tend to pull the 3PH upwards, pulling the grader blade off the ground? I can see it would work remarkably well in applications where the load is level or lower than the 3 point hitch.
@SoatMon
@SoatMon 4 жыл бұрын
You're correct it does tend to lift when pulling a tree but my tractor is pretty light so I have to brace it against something so I usually back up to a stump or another tree to keep the tractor from getting dragged.
@tedfarkas
@tedfarkas 4 жыл бұрын
@@SoatMon Thanks for the reply; since my work will be similar to yours (about 30-40 dead ash trees, thanks to the Asian ash borer), I will forego the grader blade and just use a nylon strap to tied to the front of the tractor & around a tree to keep it in place

Aint no way I'd a cut a factory blade. Farmi dont use cut grader blades. Plus, tractors dont have enough alternator for more than half a pull with an electric. Why not use hydraulic or pto? I just put a hydraulic tow truck winch on a tractor, pulls good. I guess I will put a large pto winch on one of the other tractors to use it a little. We are doing a full resto on skidder right now, so it is down.

I am in deep shi*, mud I mean, what’s a nice build but where would you mount a winch on. Case 480 construction king skip loader when you need to winch yourself out?!?! That design sinking blade I get until you need to winch yourself backwards cause you fell through sink hole that has no bottom to curl out with loader and I have a 12,000 winch temporarily logged chain on top of rippers and as I expected it’s trying to rip box off but chain broke at tree and almost decapitated me as I was also concerned, dad had one on a fender of a Massey Ferguson that worked awesome but had good iron reinforcement unlike case fender..loader has haudralics in way and I can only go reverse cause road gone in front, no welders can assist at its current location, anyone please offer anything?!?

That electric winch is not gonna do it. It'll eat your battery. Even with a couple batteries it will be way to slow. I'm sure you know all this now as I can see this video is nor new.
@SoatMon

I agree with you but it works for my purposes. I really just use it to pull a tree over when I cut it down, so it doesn't hit a building or something. I don't skid logs with it. A PTO or hydraulic would be better for most people but I really like the ability to be able to tighten it up while I'm near the tree. Thanks for the comment.
