I really was back and forth on making this video, but I think it's an important topic and one worth discussing. Is personal responsibility the end all be all? Even in an industry like this one? Or do we keep our communities safe? I feel strongly that whose of us with the knowledge and experience in this community have a responsibility to those who are newer or younger- and I extra feel that way about anyone who is profiting off of this industry. Curious to hear others' thoughts in the comments below.

I totally agree with everything you said!! I think "tutorials" for things that are risky and dangerous should be much harder to access. The "well it worked for me" argument is completely meaningless. Just because you exposed yourself to a risk and didn't get a negative effect one time, doesn't mean it's suddenly 100% safe for everyone. When I was a kid I loved watching those fun science experiment shows on TV and I remember there was always this clip they played several times throughout each episode where they super dramatically said DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I'm pretty sure they were legally required to put that in there. But on social media (also outside the bodymod community) there's no such thing. And you only go viral if you do something outrageous. And if you want to go viral again you need to do something even more outrageous. And then there's a lot of other people also doing outrageous things trying to go viral and they're all trying to do the most outrageous thing. Like a child literally died from the holding your breath challenge but some creators will still gladly promote dangerous behavior for their 15 seconds of fame. Luckily we also have people like you Lynn always making the best informative videos because you do care

i think harping on the personal accountability point and how people should face the consequences of their actions ignores the fact that piercing misinformation tends to go viral much easier than and is therefore more easily findable than correct information. i follow lots of APP piercers and jewelry companies and i get more reels about piercing fails and piercing at home than videos by piercers with correct info (which isnt helped by the fact that there are simply more randoms at home than less piercers making reliable content)

I absolutely agree community safety and proper education is important i see alot of missinformation on tiktok and teens or people not as heavily into the community see these things and think oh its fine especially people who have done unsafe practices that believe the "your a baby if you dont peirce yourself with a needle and potato like i did its not that serious" but it absolutely is baffling to me how many people have damaged their body permanently doing these things and still think its okay to tell younger people or the lack of concern for peoples children? Also in any other community online there is a big level of safety responsibility the peircing and body mod community is no different even more serious.

Remember a few years ago when someone put gorilla glue in their hair had to go to the hospital and it was very serious and everyone was like uh definitely don't do anything like this. And everyone agreed in everyday communities safety is very important the same should be said for this community

@@kiss_x_kill i agree with your overall point but i remember the reaction to the gorilla glue hair lady being super mean. people were nonstop mocking her and saying 'why would you ever do this, you're so dumb' which is a real possibility in piercing circles as well especially said by people not into piercings.

as a junior piercer it's really frustrating to see content creators with a video that has a large amount of views not understand the transparency needed when it comes to the piercing industry. it's MORE frustrating that no matter how hard I work to educate my clients, someone somewhere will demonize me because I refuse to stay silent to these issues. piercers aren't problematic because we refuse to allow our clients to hurt themselves. BEST example for this same situation is lets say someone posts a diy floor cleaner mix that works for them with no issues. all they say is "this works for me, I'm not a scientist" the mixture they're promoting is ammonia and bleach. it works for them, and they use it regularly. then there's a thread of individuals going the same thing. would we also discredit the scientist/doctors who warn against it?? bodily autonomy does not equal posting unsafe and dangerous diy hacks. instead of it being a teaching moment it's becoming demonizing the professionals and that makes me SO sad for those who will most likely hurt themselves in the future. as well as what will legal ramifications that will happen to us? makes my heart heavy tbh

FFS is the ultimate heavy mod. The titanium behind my face costs a lot more to get installed than the titanium jewelry you can see.

Where does the titanium go in FFS? Genuine question btw, not trying to be snarky.

@@SaraNerys no worries, the hardware is used in the frontal sinus reduction. To reduce the bone covering the frontal sinus without making it thinner. The doctor makes a big cut along my hairline and then peels my face down from my forehead and brow in order to cut out a section of the bone, take it into the other room, reshape it with a grinder and stuff, then come back and screw it in place with titanium hardware, and then finally reattaches the skin to my face and sews up the hairline.

@@Lynn_Loheide should most people who offer it be equivalent then? I was trying to be picky about what mod artist I visit but if it’s the same / illegal everywhere I’ll just go to the cheapest or closest

@@christinahamiltonracing PLEASE be picky about which mod artists you see. Some of the folks out there are very unskilled and dangerous and could seriously permanently injure you. There’s only 3 artists in America I would see for a tongue split.

I would say there’s a large, large skill gap between the top mod artists and everyone else tbh.
